Santa’s not the most amazing Christmas character

“Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum”?

Christ is not a yo-yo.
He doesn’t come
Every Christmas
And then go-go
Like Santa
And his “Ho. Ho. Ho.”
That kind of thinking
Is a no-no.
It turns Christmas
Into a show-show
To row, row, row
The world’s economy,
But “Christ in you”
Is “the hope of glory.”
Let the living Jesus
Daily empower you
To stand toe-to-toe
Against depression
And to never
Allow your life
To be so-so.

The word Christmas begins with Christ. How can such an obvious fact be so widely ignored? I went to a Christmas concert yesterday and heard a very entertaining band exclusively play Christ-less Christmas songs.

One of the band members asked the audience, “Who are the three main characters in Christmas?” Of course, someone said Santa and the band member smiled. But then two people yelled out Jesus, and the band member appeared to be shocked. He said, “Well, yea,” and stumbled over his words so much that I didn’t hear his second character. Then the band sang a song about his third character, the Grinch. (Too often Santa and the other holiday characters ship Jesus out of Christmas on Santa’s sleigh.)

Can Christ-less songs truly be Christmas songs? Let’s be honest and call a holiday song a holiday song.

Christmas (along with every other day of the year) is a great time to sing about the living and ever-present Jesus Christ! O, come all ye faithful; let’s sing about and celebrate the risen Jesus — God in human flesh! Let’s go tell it on the mountain and honestly answer the question, “What child is this?

When someone doesn’t have a heart that is kept rigorously ablaze with praise for Jesus, “Christ in you” is replaced by the haze of routine religion and dispelled from daily life. Christ came into the world so that He can live in and through you. If that doesn’t raise your heart to blaze with passionate praise for Jesus, what will? Continually gaze at Jesus with the eyes of your heart so that He can amaze you day and night. Follow His ways, not your own!

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia."
