Overall the church in America is struggling, losing members, shrinking. On the other hand, Facebook is growing by leaps and bounds.  So, what can the church learn from Facebook?

* People love to connect with other people. They want to be part of a network of people. Facebook allows people to connect and to communicate with each other. Perhaps the church should encourage people to connect with each other more than with the minister, the sermon, or the Sunday morning program.

* People are capable of providing their own content. Facebook doesn’t publish its own material. Instead it allows people to publish their own stuff — their thoughts, ideas, and feelings. This freedom of expression causes people to flock to Facebook. Perhaps the church could allow people to provide their own content during the Sunday morning meeting. People could speak out in the Sunday morning meeting and talk about their problems, testify to what God is doing for them, and share love and encouragement with one another.

* When people connect with others and share their thoughts and ideas, they get excited and tell everybody about it. That is why Facebook now has more than 500 million members. Perhaps a shrinking church would grow too, if it applied these same concepts.
