How (I Was Taught) To Act In Church

How I was taught to act in church:  Be quiet, sit still, behave, just listen, be passive, don’t talk, watch the preacher, be like everyone one else, don’t ask questions, only do what the program says, don’t laugh, don’t be spontaneous, don’t show emotion, act like you’re interested even when you’re not.

How the Bible says to act in church:  “When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.” –1 Corinthians 14:26 NIV

Community is not one person continually speaking to everybody else — it’s everybody speaking to everybody. Church is called to be community!

Biblically, church is not a religious ceremony conducted by one man.  It is a spiritual adventure actively involving numerous people.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!
