Could Church Can Can?

Could church can can? Here are some definitions of can — 1) to preserve in a metal container; 2) to prepare or script in advance in standardized form (a canned speech); 3) to fire an employee (The boss canned me); 4) to be able to (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”).

God can unless we can God.
(“Quench not the Spirit.”)
–Courageous obedience to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ is the can opener that let’s God out of religious cans.
(“Whatever He says to you do it.”)

Plays are scripted. Child’s play is mostly unscripted. Jesus said that we need to “become like a little child.” (Matthew 18:13) Unscripted, unprogrammed meetings let God out of the can and allow Him to take active and direct leadership!

–“We must be willing to take a risk in the present. Innovation is not optional, it is mandatory.”
–“Worship in a Salvation Army context, was historically described as ‘raucous.'” –Dr. Roger Green
These two quotes are from The Salvation Army Boundless 2015 International Congress in London and were shared by Pete Brookshaw @petebrookshaw.com

Experience uncanned church every Sunday morning at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville at 10:45 at 225 Berry St. 37207, where ordinary people show and tell what God has done!

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!

how did you get this started? I’m desperate for Christian community and open to trying anything as I feel like my family and I are dying on the Vine…

We asked our friends if they would like to try it. Many didn’t like it, but a few stayed and we have reached out in our neighborhood and attracted more. I also have written about it on Facebook and that has attracted some people as well.
