Release of the Spirit — or — Re-leash of the Spirit?
Have you ever noticed that whenever there is a release of the Holy Spirit, the human tendency is to re-leash Him and get church back under human control and programming?
But why does the Holy Spirit need a leash? Isn’t He God? Can’t we trust the Holy Spirit to lead a church service, all by Himself, without human programming?
Sure we can! All we have to do is to step out of the boat of tradition, form, power, and prestige; and let the Spirit take the lead. When we release our control of a church meeting, it brings forth a release of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
So, is church about people being passive spectators or active participators? Here’s what the Bible says:
When you come together, EACH OF YOU has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. (1 Corinthians 14:26, NIV)
This is not just a theological idea. It is very practical. At The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee, we experience this Scripture every Sunday morning at 10:45. If you are near by, come and see for yourself — 225 Berry St., 37207.
Makes me want to come to Tennessee!!
Come on down!
