Purpose of Church — Running Religious Programs or Connecting People With Christ?

The purpose of church is not to run religious programs.  The purpose of church is to help people connect with, follow, and daily obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

When people begin to listen to Jesus and do what He tells them to, there is no more need for religious programs. Church gatherings can then flow freely, spontaneous and unprogrammed.  This leads people beyond sit and listen church services into participatory, interactive, spontaneous worship meetings based on open sharing and testimony as led by the Spirit.

When in a meeting where the Lord is present and freely adored, no one is bored.  They might be uncomfortable, afraid, convicted of their sin.  Or they might be inspired, thrilled, transformed.  But they can’t be bored!

We need to get back to New Testament style church focused on life-based teaching rather than classroom-style teaching. I don’t think Jesus taught much classroom-style lecture like today’s church does. Jesus’ teaching was sharing life with His disciples and letting His teaching flow out of real life situations.  All Christ-followers should teach like that today — through Spirit-led interaction, not just through prepackaged pulpit presentations.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!
