Historically church has been seen as educational –communicating concepts about God (especially since the Protestant Reformation).
–Biblically church is seen as a mystical portal — presenting the actual presence of the living Christ. (“Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” –Jesus)
–Christ is literally manifested when we gather in His name and allow Him to take direct control in His biblical role as the actual Head of the church (the assembly, the gathering of believers).
Education can change thinking and enlighten minds.
Protest movements can change unjust laws and systems.
Encountering the living Christ can change unjust hearts and lives.
“Religion is nothing but institutionalized mysticism. The moment we attempt to organize mysticism, we destroy its essence. Religion, then, is mysticism in which the mystical has been killed. Or, at least diminished.” ―Tom Robbins
