My Dream Home Isn’t a House

Daily writing prompt
Write about your dream home.

My dream home isn’t a house. It is heart-to-heart, deeply caring community with other people. That type of community can’t be attained by rules and regulations. It’s produced by God’s Spirit.

All true Christ-followers are united in the Spirit (Ephesians 4:3). Their “unity of the Spirit” isn’t based on agreement, approval, organization, religious affiliation, or church attendance. It is built on intimate heart-to-heart connection with the risen Jesus. As Christ-followers daily surrender to and obey Christ living in them, (Colossians 1:27) they are “led by the Spirit” (Romans 8:14) and experience the amazing kinship of being united with other believers in a supernatural “bond of peace.” To maintain that unity, they must be careful not to quench or hinder the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

I frequently encounter people who I’m not on the same page with, yet as we connect heart-to-heart in God’s Spirit, we experience divine community. For example, I am a tongue-talking, vegetarian, political-centrist, black history student, Jesus Freak but I don’t demand that people accept, approve of, or applaud my beliefs and behaviors. People have a right to disagree with me, so I don’t insult them or call them haters and phobic when they do.

Love and kindness are far beyond approval or disapproval of someone’s lifestyle. Love is patient and kind. It’s not about approving or applauding what people say and do. Love is sincerely caring about and respecting people regardless of their beliefs and lifestyle. Spirit-led, loving community is my dream home.

Christianity without Christ-receptivity is just routine religion. When you feel overwhelmed that’s a good time to turn back to a simpler and better life. Make way for the Lord’s character (Psalm 103:7) to be continually produced in your heart by the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!
