Margaret Mitchell’s romantic novel about the American Civil War and Reconstruction, Gone With The Wind, was published in 1936 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937.  Had it been published in the Twenty-First Century, it might have been called Gone With The Whim.

Nowadays, many people live whim tossed lives. They choose to go whichever way their whim is blowing.

When the urge for casual, cheapo sex hits them — they’re gone with the whim. When a craving for drugs or drink rises up — gone with the whim. When hit with a desire to lie — they’re gone with the whim. When whacked with a spirit of anger, bitterness, or revenge — they’re out on a whim.

They say that the whim velocity is just too great and that there’s no way they can’t resist their gale force whims. But really, the whim chill factor has frozen their conscience. They have thrown caution to the whim.

Frankly, my dear, they don’t give a wham. They’re gone with the whim.

This sums up the confused 21st Century:
–Our contemporary culture trains people to trust in and obey their feelings, cravings, compulsions, orientations, desires, and/or whims (even more than the fact of their physiology), and then taunts people who trust in and obey the living God and the Bible, calling them foolish, narrow minded, and/or unscientific.
