What does America need? To “throw out the incumbents”? “Change”? “Economic recovery”? “Universal health care”? “To “keep the Bush tax cuts”? “Stimulus”? To stop the “obesity epidemic”? A balanced budget? To deal with illegal immigration? To win or stop its two wars?
There are various views about our need for those objectives. However, I’d like to see America brimming with mysticism.
Mysticism can be defined as “direct, personal communication and contact with God; conscious awareness of God’s presence.” People who seek and/or regularly encounter God are called mystics.
An Aldous Huxley quotation says: “The mystics are channels through which a little knowledge of reality filters down into our human universe of ignorance and illusion. A totally unmystical world would be a world totally blind and insane.”
Perhaps we need more than philosophical speculation, scientific knowledge, and technological capabilities. Maybe we need some mystical revelation to show us how to live with joy, peace, and love.
Mysticism is transformational. It works. I’ve seen many dozens of people dynamically changed by it. A William McNamara quote: “They mystical way is the only proven way known to man for changing human behavior radically and permanently.”
For example, the most effective tool for recovery from alcohol and drugs is mysticism. Alcoholics Annynomous teaches that “conscious contact with God” is the key to such recovery.
