Thanksgiving Day is here. However, Thanksgiving Day without actually giving thanks is just a fine time to dine on turkey.
So, how do you give thanks? What is necessary for thanksgiving? 3 things.
1) Something to give thanks for. Of course, everybody alive has something for which they can give thanks. If nothing else, we can give thinks for our next breath, for truly it is a gift. It isn’t earned.
2) Someone to give thanks to. Many people have helped each one of us. If we were to personally give thanks to each of them, it would take weeks, maybe months.
However, in the USA, Thanksgiving Day was originally set aside, not primarily to give thanks to people, but as an occasion to personally give thanks to God. After all, our very lives are gifts from Him.
3) The act of giving thanks. Without the actual act of thanking someone (God and/or others) we may have thankfulness (gratitude), but (by definition) we don’t have thanksgiving until we actually, verbally give thanks to someone.
So what about you? Do you want to celebrate Thanksgiving today or merely take some turkey time? I choose Thanksgiving.
