What The Church Can Learn From “Nightly News”

“Television is the main place Americans say they turn to for news about current events (55%), leading the Internet, at 21%. Nine percent say newspapers or other print publications are their main news source, followed by radio, at 6%.” –a Gallup poll of 2,048 national adults conducted June 20-24, 2013.

Why is TV news so popular?  What could the church learn from television news?

* Focus on many people’s stories rather than on one man’s knowledge. Unlike pastors, TV news anchors don’t lecture for 30 minutes. Instead they allow many reporters and eyewitnesses to share their stories during the broadcast.

* Facilitate, don’t dominate.  Rather than dominating the center of attention, news anchors share the limelight with many different people.

There are indications in Scripture that perhaps early church meetings were based more on reporting than on preaching or teaching. Acts 14:27 says: “On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.”

Acts 15:3 says: “The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad.”

Acts 4:23 says: “On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.”

Revelation 12:11 says that the early church overcame the devil “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

This is my take of how the early church operated. People were so excited about Jesus that everywhere they went they preached about Him to unbelievers. Then when they gathered for church meetings they shared with one another the amazing things that God and done in and through them.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!
