No Shades Of Gray (Or Grey)

Truth is not about fifty shades of gray.  It doesn’t grade on the curve — accepting shades of gray that are closest to white.

In the area of ethics and morality, all gray misses the mark of truth.  Gray contains falsehood and error.  Gray is not (and will never be) white — pure truth.

Yet we humans content ourselves (and even pride ourselves) with moral grayness because it is not completely wrong or totally evil or absolute darkness.  Grey contains a mixture of good, so we illogically think that our gray hearts can’t be that bad, but because they contain some good, they must be all good.  We must be good people.

And that way of thinking obscures God’s grace.  Grace is God’s undeserved or unmerited favor.  Unmerited favor cannot be experienced by those who think that their gray has earned God’s favor.

Christ said to be perfect.  If we are not perfect then we’ve fallen short of God’s moral standards.  We’re not gray (or Christian Grey for that matter), we are derelict sinners; we are decadent. We are completely missed up and without hope of holiness (or Heaven).

And when (if) we get to that realization, not just about human nature, but about ourselves, that’s when the shade comes off of grace.  We crumble before the living God (with no merit of our own) and cry out for His undeserved mercy and forgiveness.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!
