Cereal, cars, & church alternatives . . .

If for many centuries, almost everyone in the world who ate breakfast always had some brand of cereal, we would think it strange if a few people started talking and writing about having pancakes for breakfast. Breakfast cereal eaters might even feel threatened and/or put off by the break in tradition.

For many centuries, almost everyone in the world who has gone to church (except Quakers) has gone to some brand of highly programmed meeting built around a one-man sermon. However, nowadays some people are openly talking and writing about unprogrammed worship where everyday people are allowed to show and tell what God has done as they are prompted by the Holy Spirit. Should traditional church feel uncomfortable about that? No.

–God has used the traditional church format and will continue to use it. But perhaps there is another way of Christians meeting together that God also wants to use. Why should we limit God to just one format for Christian meetings?
–Here’s another example. Cars were the main personal vehicles in use for many years. When SUVs and minivans came out, car drivers didn’t think that SUV/minivan drivers were saying that cars were bad. They just chose to go beyond cars and drive a different vehicle.
–In the 21st Century God is introducing us to a new vehicle for corporate worship. He’s bringing back the New Testament concept of ekklesia based on 1 Corinthians 14:26. The traditional church model will always be around, but God is offering us something fresh and creative.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!

Steve, Love what you are writing about ekklesia. If you every feel called to explore Jesus’ strategy for starting/planting hundreds of churches like this, let me know.
