How well has the concept of one man steering Sunday morning church done in presenting Christianity in the past 64 years? I just heard these stats on PBS. In 1952 only 2% of Americans considered themselves to be nonbelievers in God or in any religion. Today more than 25% of Americans say they are nonbelievers. Those statistics seem to indicate that what church is doing isn’t working.

So many people have been hurt by church. But when church has hurt, ekklesia will heal!

You can see God! How? “He (Moses) persevered because he saw Him who is invisible.” –Hebrews 11:27

You can see the invisible God like you see the wind moving the leaves. Given the right environment, you can see God moving in and through ordinary people. The Greek New Testament calls that environment “ekklesia.” In ekklesia, everyday people respond to the wind of the Spirit the way that leaves respond to natural wind. Christ’s ekklesia is His embassy on earth. In the New Testament Greek, Jesus is quoted as saying “I will build My ekklesia.” Ekklesia was the name for the city-council in ancient Greek city-states. So what Jesus really said was: “I will build My city council — My embassy on earth.” Perhaps we need to let Him personally take the wheel when we gather in His name and allow Him to steer us in earth’s foreign environment.
