Awakening to mental health

Awakened with thoughts about mental health:

Last night I posted this question on Facebook: “How much evil, craziness, and demonic activity will 21st Century America have to experience before we realize that we desperately need the help of the living God?”

I woke up this morning with this definition of mental health running through my mind: Mental health is “the determination to denounce, defeat, and drive out destructive, dehabilating desires and deliberations, deposited by demons into your heart and mind.”

When I got out of bed I felt prompted to open a book called The Philokalia and it fell open to this:

“From whatever side a distractive thought may appear, before it has come to completion and assumed a form, the intellect immediately drives it away and destroys it with the invocation of Jesus Christ. From this point onwards the intellect begins to be full of rancor against the demons and, rousing its natural anger against its noetic (internal) enemies, it pursues them and strikes them down . The rest you will learn for yourself, with God’s help, by keeping guard over your intellect and by retaining Jesus in your heart.” Symeon The New Theologian (949-1022)

“Through tears of repentance purge your heart of all the defilement that comes from coupling with impure thoughts and giving your assent to them.” –Symeon

Are you ready for some mental health? The magic of mental health takes mystical muscle, not mundane mediocrity. Ya gotta fight for it! “Fight the good fight of faith.”

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!

Great post Steve! I would like to add just one more thought…something I heard early in my walk with the Lord:

“You cannot keep birds from flying over your head but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair”.

This saying alone has ministered to me by encouraging not to continue to think or ponder about those things that work to distract me. We face enough temptations each day but it is only if we ‘give room’ for them in our minds and imaginations that they can ‘take root’. We must do as the scripture says, “Take EVERY thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
