Early leader of the Church of the Nazarene, P.F. Bresee, proclaimed participatory church:
“‘Pump handle’ religion has to give place to the ever-ready springing up and sending forth of testimony and praise. How often the ‘pump handle’ has to be used to work up a meeting. Not so when He (the Spirit) has come, but rather the hot, popcorn variety, that vies with each other to find a place to speak forth the wonderful blessings of His presence.”
–“Brethern, the people cry for deliverance from long sermons.”
–“You ask who is to preach the Word? Everyone on whom the Holy Ghost has fallen.”
–“I look to the Holy Ghost to be our teacher, for He only can really lead in the way.”
–“There will be 40,000 sermons preached today in the churches of America, but little will be accomplished unless there is such gazing into heaven that Pentecostal fires come down.”
–“Without the manifest presence of the Holy Ghost any church is a failure.”
–Sometimes it seems, even when we say in our creed that we believe in Him, we live, and preach, and lead men as though there were no Holy Ghost.”
A church meeting
Can be so much more
Than a solo performance
Before a passive audience.
It can be God’s symphony;
Actively performed
By everybody present;
Arranged and directed
By the Holy Spirit.
