Perhaps a pastor/minister’s job is not to focus people’s attention on himself, on his plans, or on his performance; but instead to focus people’s attention on the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

–John the Baptist put it this way: “He (Jesus) must increase but I must decrease.”

Paul of Tarsus taught that a minister’s job is to train ordinary Christians to do “the work of the ministry.”

“And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; to equip the saints for the work of ministry, that is, to build up the body of Christ,” –Ephesians 4:11-12

In other words, a minister should work himself out of a job by training, empowering, and releasing others to do the ministry.  It works like this:
