Just about everybody on the planet has a sense that some activities are morally wrong. Love doesn’t try to force people to support the activities that violate their conscience.

Could Church Can Can?

Could church can can? Here are some definitions of can — 1) to preserve in a metal container; 2) to prepare or script in advance in standardized form (a canned speech); 3) to fire an employee (The boss canned me); 4) to be able to (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”).

God can unless we can God.
(“Quench not the Spirit.”)
–Courageous obedience to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ is the can opener that let’s God out of religious cans.
(“Whatever He says to you do it.”)

Plays are scripted. Child’s play is mostly unscripted. Jesus said that we need to “become like a little child.” (Matthew 18:13) Unscripted, unprogrammed meetings let God out of the can and allow Him to take active and direct leadership!

–“We must be willing to take a risk in the present. Innovation is not optional, it is mandatory.”
–“Worship in a Salvation Army context, was historically described as ‘raucous.'” –Dr. Roger Green
These two quotes are from The Salvation Army Boundless 2015 International Congress in London and were shared by Pete Brookshaw @petebrookshaw.com

The Most Amazing Thing In The World

me at CPV

What is the most amazing thing in the world? To be aware of God’s presence is to be filled with wonder and amazement. Nothing can compare with His splendor! God’s presence is the most amazing thing in the world!

The 21st Century church follows pre-planned programs.
–The 1st Century church followed God’s living Presence!
(Perhaps it’s time to get back to the Presence!)

Jesus is not just a sermon topic.
He’s a present and living reality;
Ready to show up and show out,
If we step out of our comfort zone,
Listen humbly to His voice,
And then do what He tells us.

The Bible Teaches That Love Is A Fruit Of The Spirit

There’s a popular phrase going around: “love wins.” But what is love and where does it come from? The Bible teaches that love is a fruit of the Spirit.

fruit of the Spirit

The word Spirit in this quote has a capital S because it refers to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is:
1) How God lives on Earth: Religion often refers to God in Heaven. However, Scripture teaches that God is also present and active on Earth as the Holy Spirit.
2) Invisible: The Spirit is somewhat like air. You can see Him, but you can feel Him and you can see the results (fruit) of His Presence.
3) Everywhere except in those who reject Him: The Spirit doesn’t force Himself into people. He is not in those who don’t want Him.
4) A Person: The Spirit is not a force (to be with you). He is a Person to live in you!
5) Knows everything: The Spirit is all knowing. Therefore He is a great Comforter when we don’t understand.
6) All good: Everything He is and does is good. He longs to do good in and through all human beings.
7) All powerful. The Spirit has unlimited power. He can break every chain that binds human beings and produce amazing fruit in people’s lives.
8) Speaks to people. Through out the Book of Acts it says that the Spirit spoke to Christ-followers.
9) Eternal: He lives and is forever.

Love is not a feeling produced by human emotions or by physical attraction. Love comes from the Spirit. Love is living by principle rather than by desire, doing what’s right rather than what feels good. Love even shows kindness to enemies. It cannot be produced by mere human effort.

Love and the other fruit of the Spirit are not character traits. They are radical, supernatural qualities that run counter to human nature. They are miracles released by the Spirit’s Presence in human lives.

What the world needs now is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control! When people surrender their will to the Holy Spirit, these amazing qualities will flow in and through their life! Will you?

When Does Love Win?

Perhaps love doesn’t win with flags, pride, or court decision. So when does love really win? Love wins when I surrender to God’s love by laying down my desires and giving up my will.

I saw this kind of broken, humble love win as the Charleston families of Emanuel AME Church spoke supernatural words of love, forgiveness, and compassion to a man who didn’t just disagree with them, but who revealed real, raw hate by murdering their family members in a failed attempt to start a “race war” in the USA. Only the living God and His amazing grace can give people the miraculous ability to love like that.
–Just like the President sang; God’s grace “saved a wretch like me” and filled me with a deep hunger and thirst to live right, to surrender my wants and wishes to Him, and to daily follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

when love wins

Western culture wants us to be driven and directed by our own desires!
–Christ calls us to be dominated by Divinity!
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” –Paul of Tarsus

Mercy, forgiveness, and grace have no meaning unless we are guilty of moral wrong. Good, morally right people, have no need of those things. As for me, I pray along with the ancient Orthodox monks who continually said: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.“

It’s Your Choice–Principle Or Preference

Everyone’s choice . . .
–Do I choose to use my freedom to follow and obey my own feelings?
–Or do I choose to use my freedom to faithfully follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ and His teaching “Go and sin no more.”

Shall we choose principle or preference? Christ-followers are called to live by principle, not preference; obedience, not opinions. We are called to set our personal preferences aside and to follow and obey the moral teachings of Scripture and the voice of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ. We often fail in to our attempt to obey, however, when we do, we are commanded to confess our wrongdoing, wrong speaking, and/or wrong thinking as sin, and then to turn back to faithful obedience.
–How are you doing? What do you need to confess and to tun away from?
–“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” –Psalm 139:24

The modern myth says:
“God’s not relevant.”
Truth says:
“You can’t take your next breath without Him.”

Did the US Supreme Court just decide that subjective desires and feelings override the facts of human anatomy?

Today the US Supreme Court suddenly changed the definition of the word “marriage” that has stood for thousands of years of human history. So what definition of marriage are we left with? Here’s a go at the Court’s new definition of marriage in the USA:
–“Marriage is a government recognized union of any two people qualifying them for special government and employee benefits.”

The redefinition of marriage will make genealogical charts in the distant future much more complicated.

Learn 2 lay down the downside and ride on life’s upside!

Decide to glide on life’s upside!
Learn to ride astride the tide
Of the warm and uplifting current
Of Christ flowing as a Guide inside you.
Push aside all emotional downdrafts
That misguide or chide or deride you.
Don’t be denied your ride with the Son!

You can’t fly with one foot on the ground.
–You can’t follow Christ with one foot doing your own thing.

“No one truly knows Christ unless he follows Him daily in life.” –Hans Denck (16th Century Anabaptist leader)

body of Christ each one a part of it

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” –1 Corinthians 12:27
–In the body of Christ, we are called to train one another to “glide on life’s upside” and to “ride the uplifting current” of the Holy Spirit. If you are a part of the body of Christ, then your thoughts and insights are important! When the body of Christ gathers for worship, are you welcome to share what God is showing you? Not in most church services.
–However, at The Salvation Army Berry Street we welcome each part of the body of Christ to show and tell what God has done as they are prompted by the Holy Spirit! Come and see — every Sunday morning at 10:45, 225 Berry St., Nashville 37207.

2 testimonials about Berry Street:

“Berry Street Worship Center is as close as I’ve seen so far to the first church. The senior pastor is Jesus. It’s led by Steve and Ernie Simms. There’s teaching at 9:30 worship at 10:45. After worship they wait on Holy Spirit to speak through the Body through words of wisdom, prophecy, prayer for the sick. It’s awesome!”  –Cliff and Kim Farrell (Sons of Thunder band)

“Berry Street has wrecked me as far as the traditional church model. I come away knowing I have been in the presence of God, where He has freedom to do what He wills that day. It all flows so beautifully.” –Penny Fowler Major

What The Church Can Learn From The Anabaptists

anabaptists

The following quotes are from the book, The Secret of the Strength–What Would the Anabaptists Tell This Generation? Why not read through them and see what the 21st Century Church can learn from the 16th Century Anabaptists?

“The Spirit of Christ teaches and reveals things that no man can express and which cannot be written onto paper. Nobody knows what those things are, save those to whom they have been revealed.”  –Leonhard Schiemer 1527 — Lesson 1) Don’t just accept what you have been taught. Ask God to give you supernatural revelation!

“The educated people of this world start at the wrong end. They hitch the horse to the back of the wagon. They would love to receive the truth of Christ in high institutions of learning, but that is like me going to the goldsmith and telling him to teach me his trade without bothering to take me into the workshop, or like a man learning out of a book how to make shoes.” –Leonhard Schiemer — Lesson 2) We need hands-on experiences so that we can practically learn to follow and obey Jesus and not just follow Him on paper. Perhaps church could be like a science lab or a shoemaker’s workshop and allow people to learn to live for Christ by doing it with one another.

“Our thoughts on the inside and our deeds on the outside — all our life is to become a picture of Christ.” –Wolfgang Brandhuber — Lesson 3) Let’s make our thoughts and actions conform to Christ.

“The Spirit of God does not want to be bound.” –Wolfgang Brandhuber — Lesson 4) Obey the Spirit first, above protocol, tradition, formality, or anything else that would cause us to want to quench the Spirit.

“All who are one with Christ through his divine Word are members of his body: that is, they are his hands, his feet, and his eyes. He is the head of the body, and it is through Him that the members are governed.” –Ambrosius Spittelmayr 1527 Lesson 5) Make Jesus the actual and literal Head of each local church.

” For some time I thought I had faith, but I have come to see that it was a false faith. It was a faith that could not overcome my spiritual poverty, my inclinations to sin, my weaknesses and my sickness. Instead of that, the more I polished and adorned myself on the outside (with my supposed faith) the worse became my spiritual sickness on the inside. . . . Now I see clearly that I cannot keep on in this unbelief before God, so I say: Yes Lord!”  –Hans Denck 1525 — Lesson 6) Let’s get real and get rid of all pretense.

“No one truly knows Christ unless he follows him daily in life.” –Hans Denck — Lesson 7) If we are not living our lives like Christ, our faith is faulty.

“What we need to do is teach one another to know God.” –Hans Denck — Lesson 8) Rather than just teaching doctrine, we need to teach each other how to have a real, dynamic relationship with the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

“The light of God within us shows us what sin is, and what it is not. All men have this light, but not all of them make use of it.” –Leonhard Schiemer — Lesson 9) We need to open up to the light of God and let Him convict us of anything that isn’t right with Him in our life and in our churches.

“He who has not learned what he knows from God, but from men, has a faith that cannot stand.” –Leonhard Schiemer — Lesson 10) We need to move beyond teaching religion and train people how to learn directly from God.

“I stand alone on the Word of God, and let all men do likewise!” –Melchior Hofman — Lesson 11) Let the written Word (the Bible) and the living Word (the Spirit) be our guide and conform our lives to what the Bible and the Spirit teaches.

“Christ alone is the ruler of the conscience, and besides him there is no other. Let him be your emperor, and his holy Word your law. You must obey God before the emperor and hold what God says above what the emperor says.” –Meno Simons — Lesson 12) Put Christ first, not in words, but in action. Always follow and obey Him first!

“No man, no matter how learned he may be, can understand the holy writings until he comes to know them and learns them in the most inward part of his soul. If he speaks about the writings before this takes place, he speaks like a blind man about color.” – Ludwig Haetzer 1529 — Lesson 13) Get to know the Bible in your own heart, not just in you mind!

“The Word of God is water to all those who thirst for salvation and is made alive in us through the Spirit of God, without whose work it is only a dead letter.” –Balthasar Hubmaier — Lesson 14) Let the Holy Spirit teach you what the Bible means.

“The inner Word is not written, neither on paper nor on tables of stone. It is not spoken nor preached, but man is assured by it through God in the depths of his soul, and it becomes engraved in a heart of flesh through the Spirit by the finger of God.”  –Ulrich Stadler — Lesson 15) Go after God with all your heart and let Him write on your heart.

“To know all about Christ without the Spirit of God within is useless, even though one may read about them and study them as long as he likes. Without the Spirit, one becomes learned, but he does not learn.” –Leupold Scharnschlager — Lesson 16) Open up to hear and obey the Spirit.

“Today, too, every man wants to be saved by a superficial faith without fruits.” — Conrad Grebel — Lesson 17) Don’t settle for a shallow “salvation” that doesn’t change your thoughts, your lifestyle, and your heart and make them like Jesus!

“Man, are you tired of being sad? Start doing what is right. Sin brings eternal pain, and one needs to fight it. Be serious! Get to know yourself first. Purify your heart and be humble.”  –Othmar Roth — Lesson 18) Hold yourself to God’s high ethics. Refuse to make excuse for your moral failings.

“God does not ‘build churches’ the way people do. He moves. He is a Spirit. God is the Spirit that moves in Christ and in those who live in community with him. The church is a movement, moving from age to age, from place to place, and from people to people, wherever God finds broken hearts, truly surrendered, in which to dwell.” – Peter Hoover, author of The Secret of the Strength–What Would the Anabaptists Tell This Generation? — Lesson 19) Follow the Spirit into God’s Presence and power, don’t camp out in your comfort zone!

Listen-To-Me Leadership vs. Hear-From-Heaven Leadership

Listen-to-me leadership likes to lecture. It makes people dependent on one man’s theology and Bible interpretation.

Hear-from-Heaven leadership humbly connects people with the living God so that they can hear directly from Him.

You can never hear enough lectures to change your heart. Inward change comes only from the supernatural revelation of hearing God’s voice.

One time Peter declared that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus then told Peter that he didn’t receive that insight from man, but directly from God. Without personally and directly hearing from God, our faith is built on sand.

Puppets recently helped demonstrate this powerful truth to children at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee!

012
–The prophet Eli and the young Samuel interacted about hearing the voice of God. Samuel kept hearing someone calling his name. Eli told Samuel to go back to bed and to say “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” the next time he heard his name. Samuel did it and God began to tell Samuel many things.
–Then we had the children pray “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” and listen for about a minute. Afterwards, many children came forward to share with the group, powerful things that God told them.
–If young Samuel and 21st Century children can hear from God, then you can too! Why not pray that prayer and listen for yourself?
