Christian Spirituality — God Wants To Take Us Beyond Academics To The Heart!

I ordered a book, Christian Spirituality–Post Reformation and Modern, from Amazon, thinking it would be a spiritual look at faith.  However, as I began to read it, I found it to be a philosophical and academic analysis of Christian spirituality — very dry.  (How can they make spirituality so boring?)  I plowed my way through the first chapter “Early Jesuit Spirituality” and then on into the next one, “Seventeenth-Century French Spirituality.”

The book has 542 pages, so I began to wonder how I was going to endure it.

Christian spirituality book

On page 53 (only 10% of the way through), I came to a subheading that read:  “Louis Lallemant,” who was a 17th Century Catholic monk.  They quoted Louis as saying: “The two elements of the spiritual life are the purification of the heart and the direction of the Holy Spirit.” (Notice Louis didn’t say “academic study.”)

I Googled Louis Lallemant and discovered a book he wrote, Spiritual Doctrine.  It is spiritually on fire!  As I began to read it online, I was blown away by Louis’ passionate love for Jesus Christ and by his honest sharing of how to grow closer to the living Jesus.  I spent 3 hours last night and 2 hours this morning, reading it and collecting dozens of quotes.  Here are a few of them:

“The more we renounce ourselves to unite ourselves to God, the more we cease to be miserable.”

“Few have sufficient courage to reach the point of grace and of glory which God has for them.”

“If we love the esteem an applause of the world, we are fools; we feed ourselves with wind.”

“Some think they do wonders because they preach powerful discourses, well composed, well prepared, and delivered with grace. They deceive themselves.”

“Follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit, His will, His instructions.  For if we make a good use of such light, God will favor us with more.”

“We shall be enlightened in proportion as we are faithful in cooperating with grace.”

“People weary themselves to death with laboring to compose fine sermons, and nevertheless scarcely any fruit results.”

“Most preachers have sufficient knowledge, but they do not have sufficient devotion or holiness.”

“There are but few who follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

“We may compare those who are led by the gifts of the Spirit to a ship running full-sail before the wind.”

“The reason why we are so little illuminated by the Holy Spirit and so little guided by the motions of His gifts is that our soul is sensual and full of a multitude of earthly thoughts, desires, and affections; which extinguish within us the Spirit of God.”

“The frequent reading of Holy Scripture is a means of receiving the Holy Spirit and of being guided by His direction.”

“We are so full of illusions and so little on our guard against them, that we deceive ourselves continually.”

“A pure soul will learn more in one month by the infusion of grace, than others in several years  by the labor of study”

“We shall never attain to spiritual freedom, unless we correct the faults which God makes known to us.”

“Enter into the things of God by a submissive love rather than by the force of reasoning.”

“We should lead a supernatural life as members of Jesus Christ, animated by His Spirit.”

“We must quit this wretched slavery to our own interests, and serve our Lord purely for the love of Him.”

“The high notions we entertain of our own merit are nothing but error and falsehood; the desire we have to be esteemed, praised, and honored, is nothing but injustice.”

“Contemplation is a supernatural habit, by which God raises the soul to knowledge and illuminations.”

“There are three sorts of dangerous poisons which flow into the heart: 1) vain-glory; 2) sensuality; 3) anger and bitterness of spirit.”

“One who is truly humble must comport himself like a little child.  He must behave with simplicity like a child.”

“The root of humility is the knowledge of God; for it is impossible to know and feel our own vileness, except by reference to something great with which we may compare it.”

“God communicates truth in an instant, and by a simple view.”

“We must banish from our heart every other dominion than that of God.”

“Men commonly wish to join together the kingdom of grace and that of sin.  Hence it is that the ordinary state of man is full of disorders and greatly distracted.”

“To make God the heart’s undisputed possessor, it is necessary to drive out of it the tyrants who contest with Him.”

“We must apply ourselves vigorously to dislodge obsessive thoughts and to destroy them by contrary inclinations.”

The Gift Of A Really Old Book & A Brand New Year (Happy 2015)

Someone, who doesn’t believe in God, sent me a 122 year-old Bible last night (New Year’s Eve 2014).  His gracious gift both blessed & bewildered me.  It made me ponder; what does it mean?

The Bible is tattered.  The cover and several pages have fallen off and the binding is broken.  There are no marks in it, except a name written in cursive inside the cover:  “James Emmett Tucker.”

The only thing I found in the Bible is a clipping of a short poem, Thanks, by Christie Lund. It reads:

“I WOULD indeed give thanks,
I am so rich today;
Rich in the things that count the most–
Love and a child at play;

HOME and those who are near and dear;
Health and strength of limb;
Courage and comradeship and peace,
A faith in Him.

WHO gives all blessings, understands
The things that I would say
In humbleness and gratitude
Of thanks today.”

After reading the poem, I flipped the Bible open and randomly put down my finger.  It landed on this verse:

“At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?  And Jesus called a little child unto him and set him in the midst of them, And said, verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.”

Poet Christie wrote “the things that count the most–love and a child a play.”  Jesus said “become as little children.”  Our culture teaches “don’t be childlike,” “don’t be innocent and genuine,” “complicate life.”  (Which ideas are most likely to produce a happy 2015?)

Perhaps we should take the timeless and transformational thoughts of the ancient Book into 2015.  How?  By simply reading it for at least 5 minutes everyday.  Focus on the New Testament (the last 1/3rd of the Bible).  Try it for 21 days.  If at the end of 21 consecutive days of reading, it hasn’t made your life better, you can give up its simplicity and go complicate your life some more.

Letting God Have The Liberty To Use All His Letters! (Free The Keys!)

Participatory church is effective because it allows God to use all the keys on the keyboard, not just one kkkkkkkkkkkey!

Church members are like the letters of the alphabet — when they all participate together (as led by a wise, living hand), amazing communication happens.
–However when church attenders sit passively and let one letter do all the talking by himself, communication becomes quite limited.

Here’s an example:  One letter doing it all: “Iii Iiiii iiii ii.”

Many letters participating: “Let Jesus lead us.”

When church is stuck on one kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkey, we greatly limit God.  Perhaps we should let God have the liberty to use all His living letters!  Let’s free the keys!

Experience a church meeting with free keys and every letter allowed to participate at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45.

2014 in review — Free Gas For Your Think Tank!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 55,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 20 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

A Challenge For Pastors In 2015 #2 (Let the living Jesus lead a church meeting.)

Pastor Challenge 2015 #2 — Step aside and let the living Jesus lead at least 1 Sunday morning church meeting all by Himself. (Click here to see Pastor Challenge 2015 #1.)

Here’s how:  1) Begin by reading 1 Corinthians 14:26 to the congregation from a microphone on the floor in front of the platform.  (“What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.”)

2) Next say a spontaneous, unplanned prayer from your heart surrendering the meeting to Jesus and to His direct control & leadership.

3) Then go sit down in the congregation and watch what God does with ordinary people during the next hour or so.

(There is a scene in the Max Lucado movie, The Christmas Candle, where a church meeting like this actually happens.)

“Hitherto we had been the leaders and helpers. Now the Holy Spirit Himself took full control of everything and everybody.”  —-Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

WWJD? What will Jesus do (when we let Him lead a church meeting)?  People have seen what happens when one man leads a church meeting . . . Perhaps, now, we need to see what happens in a church meeting when we let the living Jesus lead us.

Zinzendorf

“I have but one passion: It is He, it is He alone.  –Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

Will you, pastor, accept this challenge?  It takes courage.  You must be “calm and fearless.” But the results will make the living Jesus amazingly real to you and to your congregation.

Many pastors accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge to help raise money for a non-profit organization.  Why not accept this challenge to raise awareness of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ in your own congregation?

(To answer your question, “Has this been done before?”  Yes!  When you read church history you see that when spiritual awakening happens the living Jesus takes control in gatherings of people.  Acts 2 is the first example.)

Mutual Ministry — Church On Fire

2 ways 2 do church . . . 1) Professional parson / 2) Mutual ministry:

1) A professional parson preaches to passive persons.

2) A group of people listens to, serves, and ministers to one another.

mutual ministry

When a church freely allows ordinary people to show and tell what God has done, it catches on fire!

There is safety & spiritual power in numbers — and in loving mutuality.
–When your faith is nurtured on only one man’s preaching, it’s like hanging off a cliff by a single string.
–When your faith is nurtured on mutual ministry in the family of Christ (one anothering), many relational strings become a net and catch you when you stumble or fall!

U Can C Christ Born & Living In Human Beings As People Share His Story In Their Story!

Christmas 2014 has become history, but His story is continual!  See Christ living in regular human beings as ordinary people share His story through their story.

Encounter the eternal Word becoming flesh as everyday people enthusiastically express their experiences with Him.  Their words are not methodical messages from their mind, but Spirit-motivated, heart-felt evidence, lived out in their day-to-day lives.

Watch this Scripture come alive before your very eyes:  “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”  –John 1:14

Open sharing and testimonies as prompted by the Spirit reveal the living, resurrected Jesus Christ working among us.  See for yourself.  Sincerely show and tell what God has done.

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”  Don’t hold Him in.  Let Him come out and express His Presence though you and other ordinary people!  See incarnation in action!

Word became flesh

(One place this is allowed to happen is at  The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207 every Sunday morning @ 10:45.)
