About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences in non-traditional church, called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia." If you need encouragement, search for: Elephants Encouraging The Room and/or check out my Amazon author page. Thank you!

Fruity rivers of living water (an inner smoothie)

The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, etc.) can’t be taught by sermons, but will spontaneously flow from a heart aglow with Christ. Church can confine us with strings of outward obligation. Christ want to free us to flow with … Continue reading

The ultimate death penalty?

Racism is wrong. So is prenatalism. Humanity shouldn’t be mistreated because of skin color or because of living in a womb. Both the left and the right support a death penalty. The right for those convicted of horrible crimes. The … Continue reading

Can a sermon be a Sunday morning religious lullaby?

Church is like a religious lullaby, too often putting Christians to sleep. Attending church requires nothing but passivity. That doesn’t sound like a great plan for Christian spiritual growth. Church services say to people; “We don’t need your input, just … Continue reading

Can love & ethics go together?

Having strong moral character used to be appreciated and called integrity. Now it’s often condemned and called intolerance and judgment. Ethics is about doing the right thing, not about doing whatever you want to and then calling it the right … Continue reading

People are often like an out-of-control Boeing 737 Max

If you won’t get yourself under control, your unrestrained human nature will miss you up. Unrestrained human nature is like an out-of-control Boeing 737 Max. (Two of them crashed because of software problems, an Indonesian one and an Egyptian one.) … Continue reading

Democracy, human rights, & speaking truth in love

Human rights are standard equipment with human life. They cannot be taken away by any government, (but they can be violated). Oppressed people have as many human rights as anybody, but their government and/or institutions or individuals ignore their rights. … Continue reading

Don’t wait on your church

Don’t wait on your church. They may never send or release you. Go ahead and do what God is telling you to. (The Bible says to “wait on the Lord.” It never says to “wait on a church.”) Too many … Continue reading

After the Jesus Movement

After the Jesus movement I spent decades trying to fit into traditional church, but I wasn’t willing to ignore the Holy Spirit. I discovered that Christianity is easier to present as a religious program than it is to live. The … Continue reading

Learning from a black bus driver . . .

Sitting in a parked bus alone with a black bus driver, I began to tell him about my book, Off the RACE Track. After more than an hour, he began to open up to me. About that time a white … Continue reading

When racism is gone, gone, gone . . .

When racism’s gone, skin color will be like eye color, noticed, but not definitive of people’s behavior or character. When racism’s gone, the idea that human value can be determined by skin-color will be seen as absurd. When racism’s gone, … Continue reading
