Is a one-man sermon like one-man soccer? (Getting a kick out of soccer.)

Getting a kick out of soccer . . .

While watching a soccer (football) game, I noticed that no one person kept constant control of the soccer ball. Instead the ball was being headed, kicked, passed, run, and rolled all over the field by many people participating together. People were sharing control of the ball.
–Those soccer scenes reminded me of participatory church where no one person keeps control of the meeting; but instead, all the people are sharing, testifying, reading Scripture, praying, and/or teaching from all over the room!

priest with soccer ball

A participatory church meeting is like a soccer game. It involves teamwork , trust, selflessness, and interaction. It is many people sharing the ball, not one man keeping the ball to himself. A participatory church meeting is a community of people coming together to care for each other in the presence of and under the direct leadership of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ. Participatory church (PC) enables you to experience the exciting eloquence of everyday people expressing their experiences with the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

“Richard Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline, puts it this way: “It is perfectly appropriate for any person in the congregation to speak a timely word from the Lord.”

“How could you have a soccer team if all were goalkeepers? How would it be an orchestra if all were French horns?”  –Desmond Tutu

“Soccer’s not a game that you can restrict players, especially creative players.” –Tiffeny Milbrfett (Perhaps church would be more effective and more exciting if it didn’t restrict all the players but one to the passive role of sitting and listening.)

Music City 2 Worship City — The Real Nashville!

–Music City To Worship City–
I believe in Music City miracles;
That God is doing supernatural things
In Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
People are being stirred up to seek God;
Not just religiously, but with all their hearts
And more passionately than they ever have before.
Churches are being called by God
To lay down programming and control
And to allow the Holy Spirit to take meetings over.
Ordinary people are catching on fire
And laying down sins and self-focus
So they can be clean instruments for God.
Radical obedience to the living Jesus
Is becoming highly contagious
And beginning to spread everywhere.
Music City is becoming Worship City!

The Best People R Bad — My Bad!

Even all the best people are bad people. My bad! I’m a bad person and so are you. Here are some quotes that show why:

“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” –John the Beloved quoting Jesus

“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” –Prophet Isaiah

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwells no good thing.” –Paul of Tarsus

“What a wretched man I am!” –Paul of Tarsus

my bad

“There is no one righteous, not even one.” –Paul of Tarsus

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” –Jesus Christ

“Apart from Me you can do nothing.” –Jesus Christ

“When He (the Holy Spirit) comes, He will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” –Jesus Christ

“You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” –an angel

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” –John the Beloved

“All men alike stand condemned, not by alien codes of ethics, but by their own, and all men therefore are conscious of guilt.”  –C.S. Lewis

“Now is the hour we should humbly prostrate ourselves before God, willing to be convicted afresh of our sins by the Holy Spirit.” –Watchman Nee

“Let us stop the progress of sin in our soul at the first stage, for the farther it goes the faster it will increase.” –Thomas Fuller

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” –Ancient prayer of Orthodox monks, known as “The Jesus Prayer” designed to be continually repeated day and night.

The Business of Busyness — Running the Rat Race? Or Flowing in the Spirit?

Are we in the business of busyness — running the rat race; keeping on the treadmill? Our culture seems to be built on the business of being busy. We spend a lot of money just to keep ourselves “busy” and unaware of the voice of God speaking in our heart. But why should we be so busy when we have everything we need?

For example, everything I’m looking for flows out of me. Love, joy, peace, contentment, satisfaction, fulfillment, self-worth, forgiveness, acceptance — it all just flows from deep within me.
–I never can find it “out there somewhere.” When I find it, it comes from inside of me.
–There are positive inner currents in you as well. However, if you don’t plug into them, you’ll never know they are there.
–Get still, listen to the inner voice. Connect once again with your conscience — with the wisdom seeking to guide you from inside you.
–Why be frustrated or miserable when all you have to do is uncap the wells and let them flow? Christ in you, flowing out as living water, is your hope to finally find what you’ve always wanted. Connect with Christ and be thrilled with tremendous transformation!

We’ve even turned church into a program filled with business.  However, C.S. Lewis said: “The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of. Our attention would have been on God.”
—Participatory church is never “perfect” but it does place the attention on God’s presence and power working through plain people — not on the business of a program, a performance, a professional presentation, or a pastor’s preaching.

C.S. Lewis quote perfect church

Leonard Ravenhill asked this question: “If you know a church on fire for God, tell me and I’ll go. A church where after you’ve gone in, you don’t come out the same, believing that God is there and you’ve been in His holy presence!”
–We know a church like that — it’s far from perfect, but it is participatory! It’s The Salvation Army Berry Street at 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 and meets on Sunday mornings @ 10:45. Come see!

Church Restructured As An Xtreme Army by William & Catherine Booth

Xtreme sports are a recent invention; however Xtreme church has existed from time to time since the earliest Christ-followers were scattered out of Jerusalem, became extreme, and turned the world upside down.

One example of Xtreme church began 150 years ago (this year/2015) in London by William and Catherine Booth.  It restructured church into an extreme army for God expressed in military terminology, which they called The Salvation Army. In the early Salvation Army:

* Members were made into soldiers;
* Pastors were turned into officers;
* Hymns were replaced by popular bar songs sung with spiritual warfare words;
* Church organs were exchanged for brass bands playing military style music;
* Quiet religion was replaced by aggressive Christianity:
* Prayer meetings were transformed into knee drills;
* Going to Heaven was called Promoted to Glory;
* Evangelism was changed into invading neighborhoods, cities, and countries;
* Testifying (or individual/free expression in a meeting) became firing a volley.
* Church buildings were called citadels; and churches became corps;
* Church services became corps meetings;
* Enrolling new members was replaced with swearing-in new soldiers;
* Membership requirements were exchanged for a Soldier’s Covenant;
* Tithing was called firing a cartridge;
* Ministry students were turned into cadets;
* Seminary became officer training college;
* Ordination became commissioning;
* Regional meetings were turned into war councils;
* Newsletters/magazines became The War Cry:
* Parsonages became quarters;
* Many other aspects of the military were adopted in order to reach and serve non-believers, including: A) a spiritual warfare battle flag; B) open-airs (outdoor) meetings; C) military style uniforms for soldiers; D) Articles of War; E) a Disposition of Forces; F) farewell orders; G) disaster relief; H) soup kitchens; I) homeless shelters; J) a crest; K) military ranks; and L) a Red Shield.

All of these developments were a radical departure from the traditional church of the time period.  However, these changes turned The Salvation Army into a powerful Christian movement that spread around the world.  Today the Army is serving in more than 120 countries and has 1,150,000 soldiers around the world.

Perhaps the 21st Century church could learn from the Booths’ innovations and once again restructure itself into Xtreme faith. An example of contemporary restructuring of the church is participatory/organic church.

What’s Wrong? (Winking At Sin)

Does anyone have the right to tell you you’re wrong? Or must the whole world wink when you do what you do? When everybody winks at wrong doing, soon nobody will know what is wrong.

It’s not wrong to point out wrong; it’s wrong to do wrong. Freedom of conscience is fundamental to human liberty. If we are not free to obey and to express our sense of right and wrong, then we are not free!

wrong way

“If sin in your life or in your culture does not bother you, if you wink at sin, then you need to be restored to the place where it does bother you.”  –Barry H. Corey, President of Biola University and a Fulbright Scholar

“They were winking at sin — sin that should have grieved them deeply.” –David Wilkerson

“Cheap grace despises God’s authority to judge, winks at sin among God’s people, and offers false comfort to those living in sin, rather than summoning them to repentance.”  –Scott J. Hafemann

“Beware of winking at sin or thinking too lightly of it.”  –Charles Spurgeon

What The Church Can Learn From “Nightly News”

“Television is the main place Americans say they turn to for news about current events (55%), leading the Internet, at 21%. Nine percent say newspapers or other print publications are their main news source, followed by radio, at 6%.” –a Gallup poll of 2,048 national adults conducted June 20-24, 2013.

Why is TV news so popular?  What could the church learn from television news?

* Focus on many people’s stories rather than on one man’s knowledge. Unlike pastors, TV news anchors don’t lecture for 30 minutes. Instead they allow many reporters and eyewitnesses to share their stories during the broadcast.

* Facilitate, don’t dominate.  Rather than dominating the center of attention, news anchors share the limelight with many different people.

There are indications in Scripture that perhaps early church meetings were based more on reporting than on preaching or teaching. Acts 14:27 says: “On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.”

Acts 15:3 says: “The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad.”

Acts 4:23 says: “On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.”

Revelation 12:11 says that the early church overcame the devil “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

This is my take of how the early church operated. People were so excited about Jesus that everywhere they went they preached about Him to unbelievers. Then when they gathered for church meetings they shared with one another the amazing things that God and done in and through them.
