Three Ways I Know Jesus Is Still Speaking, Healing, & Working Miracles Today!

3 Ways I know that Jesus is . . .
A) Still speaking to people;
B) Still healing the sick;
C) Still making disciples; and
D) Still working miracles.
1) The Bible says: “Jesus Christ, the same, yesterday, today, and forever.”
2) I’ve heard His voice; I’ve experienced His healing; He has made me a disciple; and I’ve seen His miracles!
3) Untold millions of other people in the past 2,000 years have heard Jesus speak; been healed by Him; become His disciple; watched Him do miracles, and known by first hand experience that Jesus is still alive!

To “Me” Or Not To “Me” — (Self-Focus Or Self-Denial)

To “me” or not to “me” — that is the question!

Now I lay “me” down,
For when the focus
On “me” I keep,
My soul stays
Spiritually asleep

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”  Jesus (Luke 9:23)

Did Jesus Teach Open Participation (& Hospitality) In Church Meetings?

“If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church . . .” –Jesus (Matthew 18:17)

–Jesus expected His church to allow verbal input from those in the congregation. In the passage above Jesus is telling how He wants us to handle a conflict between people. (See the earlier verses to understand the entire process.) The last step involves bringing the issue up in a church meeting. However, we have made it where it is very difficult to obey this direct command of Jesus because our traditional church format doesn’t allow people the freedom to bring up an issue or to spontaneously interact with one another in a church meeting.
–Perhaps we could allow people more freedom to obey Scripture commands and to receive the wisdom, comfort, and hospitality of their fellow Christ-followers in church meetings.

So why are we so reluctant to allow participation in church meetings?  Perhaps that is because spontaneity in church meetings wont work unless God, Himself, shows up and personally directs the meeting.  If the participation is just human spontaneity and opinions, without the promptings of the Holy Spirit, the meeting can break down into disorder and confusion.  However, when the living God personally shows up and leads people to share in a church meeting, awe is in the air and people are amazed at how the meeting beautifully comes together.

In that Spirit-led setting Christpitality breaks out.  I read a definition of hospitality as “ushering people into deeper relationship with each other and with Christ.” That kind of hospitality requires that we daily maintain a deep, personal relationship with Christ, not as a religious figure, but as the intimately present, resurrected Jesus. Then our hospitality becomes Christpitality and the living Jesus manifests His presence to the hearts of those we serve and those we worship with.

The Church’s Rock Anthem!

church rock

The Church’s Rock Anthem — The Rock Of Personal Revelation!
–The Bible says: “Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in Heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.'”
–Direct, personal, supernatural revelation from the living God rocks your life with ongoing, radical transformation and builds you together with others as “living stones” creating Christ’s (not a man’s) church!

God spoke & God speaks! Much of what God spoke in the past is written in the Bible.
–According to the Bible: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes (present tense, not past tense) from the mouth of God.”
–Therefore, in obedience to the Bible, we need to listen to God directly speak to us in the present! Like the old hymn says: “He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing.”
–Maybe we could set aside time in church meetings to allow people to listen to God and then share what He tells them. His present words will release His power and presence in amazing ways. Try it and see!

Who is the world’s best spiritual guide/preacher/speaker?
–The Bible says: “When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.”
–For Christ-followers the Holy Spirit is the best Guide cause He’s speaking on the inside!

Let The Holy Spirit Make A Big Bang In Church!

hear the Spirit ears

The Bible says: “Hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
–Yet, very few churches allow time for people to hear the Spirit and share what they hear with the rest of the congregation.

With my head I control and direct the parts of my body.
–Christ-followers have been made part of Christ’s body, the church.
He is the only Head (CEO) of the church. Do we allow the living, resurrected Jesus Christ (in the person of the Holy Spirit) to control and direct us when we meet together as His body?

The Holy Spirit is like water in a faucet. As long as we keep our hearts and ears tightly shut off, there will be no Spirit flow, but when we open up wide to God the Spirit will gush through us in abundance!

The Puff Equation that is being pushed down our throats in popular culture says: “1 uncaused big bang + lots of time = everything in the Universe.” Perhaps if we allowed the Spirit, Himself, to lead and direct church meetings we would stand in awe of what the living God does in our midst and our hearts would explode with the realization that there is so much more to life than the Puff Equation.  And the Spirit would make a pervasive, life-transforming big bang in our hearts.

So, who is the world’s best Bible teacher?
The Bible says: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
(Perhaps we could allow people time to listen to the Helper in church and then share with the congregation what He tells them.)

Can Church Make Meetings Work Better?

Which meeting does not allow attendees to speak?
A) a trial;
B) a business meeting;
C) a class;
D) a church service.

–A trial allows people to give testimonies.
–A business meeting and a class both allow people to ask questions and engage in open discussion.
–However, a church service requires people to be silent (except for singing).
–Thus the answer is D) a church service.
*(Perhaps we could loosen up a bit and allow people a little freedom to speak out in church . . . )

Here are a couple of quotes from How To Make Meetings Work by Michael Doyle & David Straus that could help us add some freedom to church meetings:

effective meetings

“Men and women of all ages are demanding more say in the decisions that effect their lives.”  –Michael Doyle & David Straus

“There are two ways of judging the success of a meeting.  First, what happened? You must judge the real importance of your meetings by the results you get from them. Second, how the meeting went. Did everybody get a chance to participate or did one person dominate the meeting?” –Michael Doyle & David Straus

Bible knowledge is everywhere nowadays, while Bible application is very rare!
–Bible teaching is very easy to get. It’s everywhere — sermons, Bible studies, books, ebooks TV ministries, conferences, live streaming, web sites, CDs, radio, YouTube and on and on.
–But what’s so very hard to find nowadays is a safe place to get hands-on-experience obeying the Bible, openly sharing your faith, and ministering to one another.
–Where can you get that vitally important (but so hard to find) hands on experience? Every Sunday @ 225 Berry St., Nashville 37207 at 10:45 am. — The Salvation Army Berry Street.

Me, Celebrities N Church, & Judgment . . .

God can speak through any person present in a church meeting, but we usually limit Him to the parson on the program.

There are no celebrities in church. The only name that should be exalted in church meetings is the name of Jesus!

Me! Me! Me! (?)
It hard to find meaning if you’re always “me-ing.” I need a purpose beyond me and my prosperity to give me meaning!

No God = no judgment.
If there is no God, there are no absolute standards, no objective right or wrong — no such thing as “judgment.”
–So how can people who don’t believe in God get upset and accuse people of judging them when their naturalistic belief system eliminates the very concept of judging? (After all, we can’t judge anybody if there is no authoritative standard to judge them by and/or if their behavior is nothing but a naturalistic process.)
–Their act of accusing someone of judging them, belies their claimed belief in pure naturalism.

Nashville Salvation Army newsletter features a story about Berry Street

There is something going on at Berry Street . . . by Laura Tingo

The Nashville Salvation Army’s Berry Street Corps is a place where people gather to share, sing, hug and worship. Sometimes one happens without the other. Its services are anything but traditional. Firstly, there’s no sermon; instead it is based on open participation, which naturally spawns life lessons based in Scripture. There are no pews, with chairs set out in semi-circular, imperfect patterns to encourage interaction. Each service seems to take on its own shape too, as it uniquely unfolds.

Under the leadership of Sergeants Steve and Ernie Simms, it is done that way with an important purpose in mind. The door is open to anyone in need of a good dose of acceptance, friendship and faith. People come for the welcome feeling and “support group” atmosphere to bond, work things out and find peace.

“Sometimes people will stand up and share their personal story and ask for a prayer,” said Sergeant Steve Simms. “Some break down. It’s beautiful to see the other people there get up and go over and lay their hands on them to pray.”

The worship program simply states that Berry Street is “a place to believe, belong and become.”

“We do a lot of walking out life with people, situations that are hard to imagine sometimes surrounding food, clothing, housing issues,” said Sergeant Ernie Simms, “and, sometimes kids who don’t have a place to live or are hungry.”

The services are held each Sunday at 10:45 a.m. On any given week, 100 people will move in and out of its welcoming doors, with services bringing in about 65 people to worship each week. Prior to each service, Bible study is held at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments are served to all who attend.

“One of the coolest things is that we have between 20 and 30 kids each week and about six volunteer adult leaders who work with them,” she said.

On Sundays, the kids, mostly from the surrounding neighborhood near its location at 225 Berry Street in Nashville, often arrive almost two hours prior to the day’s happenings. “Nearly all the kids walk there from the neighborhood and are eager to arrive.”

Often they bring friends, and the complimentary meal for 20 quickly becomes 60. Sometimes members of the local homeless community will come in to eat. “Everyone is invited to the meal.”

They do all this with understandably minimal tithing support from the congregation. “We don’t pass a plate for the offering,” Sergeant Simms said. That’s when their friends step up.

“The support from our communities is just wonderful and amazing,” said Sergeant Simms.

And the spiritual “magic” happens for the benefit of others in the most need in miraculous ways.

School uniforms are found for kids that tell them they need clothes. Shoes are bought for several basketball players. Sometimes they turn to social media with a call and the need comes through.

Berry Street also opens its doors to serve a complimentary meal to guests from the neighborhood, once a month. Weekly prayer meetings held 6 p.m. on Tuesdays draw anywhere between four and 20 people.

Berry Street also takes its worship meetings out of its church and into the community on Thursdays, reaching about 20 students each week at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Sergeants even take their mission to the streets literally, by walking in the neighborhood from time to time, carrying a full-sized Salvation Army Flag.

Church in spiritual overdrive . . .

Spirit-driven church?  Do we need spiritual overdrive in church?

In a culture that is fast fleeing from faith and filled with Dones and Nones, perhaps it is time for church to change gears, override personality-focused human agendas, and shift into Spirit-drive. Romans eight-fourteen.

Spiritual overdrive releases sudden gusts of God’s power and Presence.  A church meeting is smoothly moving along and following a nice program, when suddenly, God interrupts and launches us into a fresh realm of the Spirit.

Spiritual overdrive overrides our cold, calculated & controlled conception of God and converts it into a hot heart-connection with God.

Spirit-drive careens past our caution and causes us to be courageous for God.

Spiritual overdrive shifts us from the humdrum of human effort into the joy of God’s fireworks!

Spiritual overdrive accelerates healing, peace, deliverance, and love.

Spirit-drive carries us along even when we feel like we can’t carry on!

O, how we need to let the Holy Spirit take the wheel and drive His church meetings!
