The Essence of Life is a Presence!

Aristotle said:  “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.”

Marcus Tullius Cicero said: “I see the essence of a happy life in a strong spirit.”

Reinhold Neibuhr said:  “Change is the essence of life.”

William Arthur Ward said:  “The essence of life is to care.”

Dennis Waitley said:  “The essence of life is finding something you really love.”

Harry Mavromichalis said: “The essence of life is constant growth.”

Gordon B. Hinckley said:  “Love is the very essence of life.”

With effervescence I say:  “The essence of life is full acquiescence to the presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!”

Check out Christ before you check outta here!
–Look into the living Jesus while you’re still in the land of the living.
–You put you car in cruise control, why not put your life in Christ control?

When Grace Is In Faces

I never could see Christ
In the backs of people’s heads,
All I saw was hair.
But when those same people
Are allowed to share
From their heart,
I feel His glory start
To fill the atmosphere.
And I know He’s living here.
I see Him in the faces,
And that’s where grace is!

Let the living Jesus,
Himself, lead us
And be our “Great Shepherd of the sheep.”
Let Him personally direct us and prompt us
And facilitate a church meeting
Beyond the reach of human plans.

Church / Change / & Jesus

Church is not about how many people are present . . .

–Church is about how much the presence of God permeates the people who are present!

We have been persuaded that the Gospel is to be primarily preached by a professional person’s proclamations and explanations . . .
–However, Jesus seems to indicate that the Gospel is to be primarily preached by ordinary people showing love for one another. (“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”)

A Wall Street Journal article says that we can change our minds.  We don’t have to keep our lives locked up in the same ole same ole!
–If you are bothered by your brain and/or tormented by your thoughts, you can actually change your brain by what you choose to do, what you choose to think, and how you choose to perceive your life! 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ called this change of mind “repentance.”
–“The mainstream view in neuroscience and medicine today is that the living brain is actually ‘neuroplastic’ — meaning that its ‘circuits’ are constantly changing in response to what we actually do out in the world. As we think, perceive, form memories or learn new skills, the connections between the brain cells also change and strengthen.” –Dr. Norman Doidge, Wall Street Journal, Sat., Feb. 7, 2015.

Perhaps it is time to change the way we think about and the way we do church . . .

Harping On & On About Participatory Church

Harping On!
Why do I harp on and on about participatory church?
–Because I experience the life-transforming music that comes forth when the Hand of God is allowed to play all the strings in a church meeting (not just one string).
–Since I first heard it as a freshman in college in 1970, this mighty melody, of God prompting everyday people to participate, has played in my soul, and I long for everyone to hear the magnificent music of mutual ministry moved by the living God.

harp

Immediately after posting the above on Facebook, I came across this quote from Salvation Army founder, General William Booth:

“We leave to others the unscriptural, and uncomfortable, and inhuman modesty of expecting and aiming at small things. We will be extravagant, we will open our mouths wide, we will nail our colors to the mast, and break down our bridges, and burn our boats. We care nothing for a retreat. We need none.” —William Booth, October, 1879  (So at the General’s exhortation, I will continue to open my mouth wide and harp on.)

I also got a surprise confirmation of participatory church from a gift Bible!
–The Salvation Army sent me a copy of “The Voice” translation of the Bible as a Christmas present. Since then I have been reading in it every night.
–About an hour after posting about “why I harp on and on about participatory church” on Facebook, I picked up “The Voice” and began to read where I ended the night before in Mark 6. After reading the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, the translators had inserted some comments and there I read these words:
–“He (Jesus) wants to make them (His disciples) part of His miracles. From recorders and observers, they will become participants.”

Releasing the best Worship Resources in your Church!

worship resources

Amazing worship resources can be released in your church’s worship . . .

The best worship resources are the people of God and the Scriptures, the songs, the insights, the instructions, the ideas, the images, the prayers, etc. that the Holy Spirit puts in their hearts. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26.)

These worship resources are not written in a book or on a web site.  They are written by the Hand of God in the hearts of the people who attend your church.  And they are just waiting to be released.

Give the people in your church the freedom and the time in a church meeting to share what God is doing in their lives and you will behold the most amazing worship resources that you have ever seen.

We have been persuaded that the Gospel is to be primarily preached by a professional person’s proclamations and explanations.  However, Jesus seems to indicate that the Gospel is to be primarily preached by ordinary people showing love for one another. (“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” –John 13:35.)

The Role of The Bible In Participatory/Organic Chruch

As a pastor of a participatory (organic) church that is based on open sharing rather than on a featured sermon, people sometimes express concern to me that people are not being taught the Bible in our meetings.  This is a valid concern.

However, after attending the meetings for several months, a woman said to me:  “I was concerned when I started coming here that I might not get enough of the Bible, but I am actually getting more Bible here than in a more traditional church.”  How is that?  Here are some reasons:

1) We schedule a different person each week to begin the meetings by reading from the Bible and telling what it means and then we have praise and worship.

2) After the worship time, people are allowed to share as they feel prompted by the Spirit. The sharing often involves reading, quoting, and/or brief teaching/exhortation from the Bible.  Thus a lot of Scripture is preached and proclaimed during the meetings.

3) People also have the opportunity to get hands-on training in actually obeying the Bible during the meetings, as they do what these and other Scriptures command: “pray for one another,” “confess your sins to each other,” “bear one another’s burdens,” “encourage one another,” “comfort one another,” “weep with those who weep,” “submit to one another,” “humble yourself,” “let the redeemed of the Lord say so,” and overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.”

4) The entire meeting format is based on the Bible passage:  ” When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation . . .” (See 1 Corinthians 14:26.)

5) The Bible is the “rule book” behind all that is done.  Everything that is shared in the meeting must be in line with the Bible.  The pastors (much like officials in a sporting event) serve in the Bible-based position of “overseers” and keep a close watch on the meeting to assure that noting is said or done that goes against the Bible.  If correction is ever needed, they loving interrupt and give correction/redirection based on the Bible.

6) The living Word (the resurrected Jesus Christ present in the person of the Holy Spirit) directs the meeting and makes the Bible (the written word) come alive before our eyes. We don’t just hear about the Bible — we experience what it is talking about. The meetings are like chapters from the Book of Acts.

7)  The meetings create a hunger and curiosity for people to read the Bible for themselves. People go home and act like the people in Acts 17:11, who “searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”  Thus their Bible knowledge is greatly increase and like the lady I quoted above, they are even more impacted by the Scriptures than they would have in a more familiar church setting.

8)  By participating and experience the presence of the living, resurrected Jesus in the meeting, people fall more in love with Him and the more they love Him the more they love the Bible!  (The rate of people’s spiritual growth in this worship format always amazes me.)

9) We also have a Bible study on Sunday mornings before we begin our participatory worship meetings.  We go through a book at a time.  Currently we are in James.

living Word written word

–Someone can be an expert on the Bible and study it every day; yet not have a personal relationship with the living Christ.
–However, someone who maintains an intimate relationship with Christ craves the Bible more than they do food (see Job 22:22).
* The closer someone’s relationship with the living resurrected Jesus Christ (the Living Word) the more they long for, desire, read, think about, ponder, learn, quote, obey, celebrate, and devour the Bible (the written word).

However, don’t just take my word for it.  Come and see for yourself every Sunday morning @ 10:45 — The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207.

Here’s how a first time visitor who drove in from Arkansas to be with us described it:  A First Time Visitor Writes About Berry Street.

Meeting Not Only 2 Hear About The Bible, But Also 2 Do What It Says

We can meet to hear about the Bible and/or we can meet to do what the Bible says.  For example:

doers of the word2 good & better

“Blessed are the peacemakers . . .”  –We can hear a talk about the meaning of the word “peacemakers” and/or we can actually open up in the meeting and make peace with one another.

“Love one another.”  –We can sit and be instructed about various aspects of love and/or we can actually stand up in the meeting and show and express love to each other.

“Confess your sins to each other . . .” –We can be informed about the power of confession and/or we can actually speak up in the meeting and confess our wrongful thoughts, words, and actions.

“Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you . . .” –We can listen to a teaching about getting excited about God and/or we can get ourselves so worked up with love for God that we can’t contain it and we start moving around the room and hugging people.”

“Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.”  –We can hear a talk about self-denial and obeying Jesus and/or we can boldly step out of our comfort zone and actually do whatever Jesus tells us to do in the meeting.

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” –We can be in informed about how the ancient Israelies shouted loudly to the Lord and/or we can release a victory shout in the meeting.

“Come unto me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  –We can be taught the meaning of the Greek words for “weary” and “burdened” and/or we can actually come into the presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ and together experience His awe-filled rest flood the meeting!

“When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation . . . ”  –We can hear a talk about different ways this verse can be interpreted and/or we can open up the meeting and allow anybody present to share as they are prompted by the Holy Spirit.

doers of the word3 James

In the New Testament, church is called a family and an army but somehow it became a primarily a classroom.

225 Berry Street, Nashville, Tennessee 37207 —  We meet here not only 2 hear about the Bible but also 2 do what it says — every Sunday morning @ 10:45 — The Salvation Army Berry Street.

3 ways Christ-followers desperately need the Bible!
The Bible in your mind = the wisdom of theology. (Read it — learn it!)
The Bible in your heart = the zeal of spiritual fire. (Let it continually stir your soul!)
The Bible in your lifestyle = the transformation of contagious example. (Radically live it out in everyday life!)

Setting The Sons Of Thunder Loose In Church!

At The Salvation Army Berry Street we have a different individual (or group) serve as our lead-worshiper (worship leader) each Sunday! The Sons Of Thunder recently led us into the awesome presence of the living, resurrected Jesus! Here’s what the Sons of Thunder wrote about their experience at Berry Street:

“Just like in the first church, the scripture was read, then worship, and most awesome was the Spirit moved and ministered through the whole body, not one man. Jesus is the Senior Pastor at The Salvation Army Berry St Worship Center!” –Sons of Thunder

sons of thunder 2

At Berry Street our purpose is to move beyond having people sit & be lectured and to have them stand & be leaders!
–Historically church meetings have tended to train people to sit silently and be lectured. However, God wants His people trained to stand strongly and be leaders.
–One way that Christ-followers can learn to be leaders is to allow them the freedom in church meetings to obey the nudgings of the Holy Spirit — to give testimonies; to read Scriptures; to say prayers; and to share words of wisdom, words of knowledge, and other gifts of the Spirit.

When the Spirit is allowed to take over a church meeting, there is no “business as usual.” Everything is fresh, new, and exciting (like the Super Bowl)! People are filled with hope, anticipation and awe. A powerful sense of God’s presence pervades the place.
