If you like social media, you’ll love social-church!

If you enjoy social media, you’ve just got to try social-church!

social church

Social-church is a Christ-centered gathering where ordinary people share messages, personal testimonies, prayer needs, insights, Scriptures, prayers, etc., and other community-based input, as prompted by the Holy Spirit. Social-church connects people in a participatory and transparent way that facilitates collective wisdom, engagement, and interaction with God.

In the New Testament church was social. Its meetings were cooperative and collaborative awe-filled, glory-gatherings; not passive and spectative sermon sessions. Perhaps that is why the early church was filled with God’s power and glory.

There are no “laymen” in social-church. Major Stephen Court of The Salvation Army Canada Territory and author of the ArmyBarmy Blog, http://armybarmyblog.blogspot.com/, puts it this way:

“There are no ‘lay people’ in The Salvation Army. By using worlds like ‘clergy’ and ‘laity’ we are reinforcing the unbiblical clergy/laity split, a strategy that rather weakens than strengthens the people of God.”

Perhaps we have too many church socials and not enough social-church!

(Check out a social-church @ The Salvation Army Berry Street on Sundays @ 10:45 am. @ 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN, 37207.)

Round About

Christ’s presence abounds
All around us,
Surrounding us with love,
But we often miss
The resounding sound of His voice
And leave Him unfound–
Like a diamond in the ground
Under our feet!

The Secret Of Revival & Spiritual Movements — Encountering God Together

encounter God together

Though out the past 2,000 years there have been many revival movements and spiritual awakenings (large and small) in Christianity. In the 1970s, I was part of one of those movements which was called the Jesus Movement. It was a wonderful time of hundreds of thousands of young adults encountering and surrendering their lives to Jesus, all across America.

Since that time, I’ve read every book about Christian revival that I can find. And I long, with all my heart, to see and be a part of another mighty move of God. Revival transforms church from a mere methodical meeting into a glorious gathering demonstrating and displaying God’s power and presence. And then it begins to transform society.

So what is the key to revival? After 40 years of reading and prayer about revival, I believe this is the secret.

When a group gathers to freely encounter and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ, the First Century church (as described in the book of Acts) happens in the Twenty-First Century!

When church meets, not to present a prearranged program to a congregation, but rather, to be programmed by the living God, revival begins to happen. The Bible puts it this way: “Quench not the Spirit.” Don’t avoid, resist, or stop the Spirit’s control of a church meeting. If, instead, we allow the Spirit, Himself, to direct the meeting, spiritual awakening will occur in that meeting.

This is not just a theory. This idea has been demonstrated every week for the past 6 1/2 years at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee, where instead of a programmed Sunday meeting, everyday people are allowed to show and tell what God has done, as they feel led by the Spirit. Come see: Sundays at 10:45 am., 225 Berry St., 37207.

Maybe many mini-sermonettes would be a more effective way of doing church than only one 1-man sermon.

Flee, Fly, Flow, Fun — The 4 Fs of Faith

Flee, fly, flow, fun (not fee, fi, fo, fum) are the 4 Fs of Faith!

Flee — “Flee youthful lusts.” You have to run from temptation, not hang around it!

Fly — “They shall mount up with wings as eagles.” You have to let Jesus keep you high!

Flow — “Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.” You have to let let the Spirit freely flow from within you.

Fun — “Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I say rejoice.” “The joy of the Lord is our strength.” You have to keep your eyes on on the prize, not on your problems!

They May Call It “Cyber Monday,” I Call It “Messiah Among Us Monday”

Monday? What do you call today?
–Are you captivated by capitalistic consumerism on “Cyber Monday”?
–Or are you consumed by love for the living, resurrected Jesus Christ on “Messiah-Among-Us Monday”?

The Monday after Thanksgiving Day has become known as “Cyber Monday.” However, I prefer “Messiah Among Us Monday.”

As we continue to kick-off the Christmas Season, I’m inviting you to celebrate “Messiah Among Us Monday” with me, in honor of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

What is preaching? (Perhaps it’s not what we think?)

What is preaching?

The Greek word for “preach” (κηρύσσω–kérussó) means to “proclaim openly something which has been done.” Every Christ-follower has a testimony so when we gather for church or go about our daily life; we can all openly show and tell what God has done! Now that’s preaching (κηρύσσω)!

If everybody who has asked Jesus into their heart began to daily allow the living, resurrected Jesus to flow out of their heart, the world would be transformed!

testify

When church permits people to publicly proclaim as they are prompted by the Spirit, the prophetic permeates the meeting!

Reading Catherine Booth — (Evil Spirits, Participatory Church & Weeping Ministers)

Reading Catherine Booth (co-founder of The Salvation Army), I came across these words:

–“I suppose most of you believe in evil spirits who have access to the human mind. I wish, if you do not, you could have some of the experiences of The Salvation Army; I think you would then.”
–If evil spirits are tormenting you, they can be overcome and defeated though the living, resurrected Jesus Christ. “And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.” Mark 1:39

Catherine Booth confirms the participatory church concept that people hearing directly from the living God is more important than people hearing sermons! (Amen! Catherine!)
“The main idea of much of the preaching of this day seems to be that of teaching people–instructing them–which too often results in the hardening of their hearts . . . I have felt like saying to the minister, ‘My brother, if you have nothing better than this to offer, let us have a prayer meeting and get something direct from the great Father Himself, without your intervention.'”

Cathering booth reading

When people allow God to publicly move them in their heart, spirit, and emotions, power breaks out! When they talk religion from their mind, not much happens.
–Catherine Booth puts it this way:
“A Baptist minister has been so stirred up and awakened that, on a recent occasion when he had to read his text (a Bible passage), he broke down weeping, which had more effect than all the sermons he had preached during the years he had been in that town. His people wept too, and many of them got converted. I wish that a few thousands of ministers could be brought to a similar state of mind before Sunday; what commotion there would be in the land!”
–Lord, let that happen right here in Nashville, Tennessee!!!

(Come visit us at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45.)
