Do YOU want a living Jesus?

Do we really want a living Jesus? (A real Easter, not just a religious holiday?)
–A living, ever-present Jesus could:
* Interrupt our Sunday morning program with His presence.
* Break out of our religious rules and traditions.
* Tell someone other than the preacher to speak up.
* Confront us with our disobedience and rebellion.
* Make us humble and broken over our secret sins.
* Prompt someone to openly confess a sin.
* Stir up demons.
* Tell us to do something frightening and/or embarrassing.
* Release an overwhelming, holy sense of awe in our midst.
* Make us literally tremble, fall down, weep, and/or rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
–Do YOU want a living Jesus!

(About an hour after I posted this question: “Do YOU want a living Jesus?” I felt prompted to pick up a book that I bought weeks ago, but haven’t read and I saw this:
–“The life of Jesus Himself powerfully manifested in tn the church. Does that sound appealing to you?” The author then gave 8 characteristics of what would happen “if Jesus began attending your church on a regular basis.) (The book is Revival Or Judgment? Which Will You Choose For Our Country? by Bob Fraley.)

Good Friday was a murderous attempt to stop the direct influence and leadership of the living Jesus. But it failed because He rose on Easter, more powerful than ever.
–Now that Jesus is ever-living and ever-present, do we attempt (in much nicer ways) to stop His direct influence and His active leadership in our churches and in our personal lives?

At The Salvation Army Berry Street, our goal is to surrender to the living, resurrected Jesus and to allow Him to have direct control of our worship meetings.  Come see what amazing things He does every Sunday at 10:45 at 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207.

Centered on & Captivated by Christ!

Easter Exclaims!
Jesus rose in an instant — suddenly alive again at a moment in time!
–Now He lives forever and He’s available everywhere on earth.
–Do we daily access His presence and His power, or do we rely on our own effort. our own intelligence, our own programming, our own traditions, our own religiosity?

The goal of a ministry should be to focus people’s attention on one person’s personality, talents, and image, while everybody else is humbly hidden away.
–However, as it is in most ministries, perhaps that one person should not be a mere human being, but the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.
–This Easter, perhaps we should take our attention off of men and put it on the living, ever-present Jesus!

What would happen if the goal of a church service was to allow people to interact with the living, resurrected Jesus — to listen to Jesus and then say and do what He tells them to in the meeting?

Goofy stuff? Shallow stuff? Bad theology? Inappropriate stuff?
–No! None of that comes out at Berry Street, because people perceive the presence of the living, resurrected Christ and they only share what He prompts them to! It’s amazing!
–Come see Easter Sunday @ The Salvation Army Berry Street, 10:45, 225 Berry St., Nashville 37207.

The Gospel doesn’t do much for those who shred it like bar-b-que; but it transforms the lives of those who gaze into it like they are looking at a great masterpiece painting. The Gospel is not for intellectual analysis; it’s for heart-felt awe that comes from being centered on and captivated by Christ!

Do you (really) believe in the resurrection of Jesus?

“Do you believe?”
Do we believe in the resurrection (in Easter) enough to set aside our agendas, control, and programming, and allow the living Jesus to personally lead and direct a church service?

Since Easter declares that Jesus is alive and present in the 21st Century, what are you learning from Him? (Not from the pastor or TV preacher, but what is Jesus, Himself, teaching you today?”)
–“Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” –Matthew 11:29

–Changing some Jesus Culture lyrics 4 pastors:
New Lyrics: “I don’t want to lead a church service like You’re not in the room. I want to let You lead it. I want to give it to You!.”
(Original Lyrics: “I don’t want to talk about You like you’re not in the room. I want to look right at You. I want to talk right to You.”)

So do you (really) believe in the resurrection? Where are you on this faith assessment scale from 1 to 5?
5 — I continually connect with the living Jesus and follow & obey Him daily.
4 — I have personally encountered the living, resurrected Jesus.
3 — I have examined the evidence and am convinced Jesus is alive.
2 — The Bible says Jesus rose so I believe it.
1 — I’ve heard about Easter all my life, so, sure, I believe.

How many heads does the body of Christ have?

How many heads does the body of Christ (the church) have? While praying I had a vision in my mind’s eye.

I saw Christ standing facing me. However, His head was hanging off to His side. In place of His head, there were hundreds of heads piled up on His neck.

Has the church replaced the headship of Christ with human heads? Human CEOs?

Church has often confined Christ to a clerical catacomb.
–Who will roll the stone away and allow Christ to control church services? (If Christ is the King and the Head of the church, shouldn’t He literally control His kingdom?)

Because of Easter, we are like John the Baptist — preparing the way for the living Jesus Christ!
–Perhaps rather than focusing people’s attention on our name, our picture, our “ministry,” we should be like John and say; “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
–Let’s allow the living, resurrected Jesus to be the one and only Head of the church; and let’s hide ourselves and our needs for personal recognition, away from public view.

Here’s a pic that is similar to my vision, except that instead of just a few heads on Christ’s neck, my vision showed hundreds.

Dead Jesus walking
And still alive & active
In the 21st Century,
Demands your obedience;
Your will; your passion;
Your very life;
Your all!

Easter Week Message 2 U:
If there’s a real resurrection;
Then, let’s start an insurrection
Overthrowing self, pride, ego,
And all the evil within us;
And passionately obeying,
The living, resurrected Jesus!
If not, then let’s quit
The Christian religion
And waste away
In meaninglessness.

Easter thought:
–A living, resurrected Jesus can personally lead and direct a 21st Century church service by Himself!
–A dead Jesus can’t . . .

Come see the living Jesus in action every Sunday morning at The Salvation Army Berry Street where instead of a 1-man sermon, the living Jesus directs the action by prompting everyday people to show and tell what God has done — 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207.

Palm Sunday Is About Participatory Church!

What’s Palm Sunday about? For one thing, it is about a Donkey Rider and participatory, organic church.

The original Palm Sunday was about everyday people speaking out for Christ. It wasn’t about people being quiet and passive spectators.  The focus was on the presence of the living Jesus Christ, not on a one-man sermon. Therefore, Palm Sunday is a great day to set aside the weekly message and let ordinary people show and tell what God has done!

WWJD in a 21st Century church service? In the 1st Century, Jesus refused to make His disciples be quiet like the religious leaders wanted, but instead Jesus encouraged them to openly speak out about Him! What will we do tomorrow?

Jesus didn’t want His followers to be quiet! Do we?
–This Palm Sunday do we want people to be quiet and passive in church? Or do we want them to openly show and tell what God has done?

“The whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in Heaven and glory in the highest!’

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’

‘I tell you,’ He replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’” –Luke 19:37-4or0

Origin of Obligatory Oratory in Church Meetings (Let’s Get Back To The Future)

Greek oratory

In the new church, ordinary people (not the Apostles) spoke about Jesus wherever they went.

“On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.”  –Acts 8:1-4

“Note the broad distinction which exists between what in the primitive churches was known as ‘prophesying,’ and that which in subsequent times came to be known as ‘preaching.’ [Prophets] were not church officers appointed to discharge certain functions. They did not practice beforehand how or what they should say. . . . Their language was often, from the point of view of the rhetorical schools, barbarous. They were ignorant of the rules both of style and dialectic. They paid no heed to refinements of expression. The greatest ‘preacher’ of them all (Paul of Tarsus) claimed to have come among his converts, in a city in which rhetoric flourished, not with the persuasiveness of human logic, but with the demonstration which was afforded by Spiritual power.In the course of the second century, this original spontaneity of utterance died almost entirely away. It may almost be said to have died a violent death. The dominant parties in the Church set their faces against it. ”  –Edwin Hatch in The Influence of Greek Ideas on Christianity (Gloucester, MA: Peter Smith, 1970)

Spirit-prompted sharing was gradually replaced in the church by formal oratory based on the rhetorical principles of Aristotle and Cicero for several reasons:

* As the first and second generations of Christ-followers died, the younger generations didn’t have the same level of Spirit-inspired passion and excitement about Jesus.

* As the church began to establish more formal structures, leadership and speaking ministry began to be confined to fewer and fewer people.

* As many converts came out of Greek culture, the church began to be overly influenced by the Greek concept of highly trained and skilled oratory.  (However, the church moved away from the Greek concept of ekklesia which is the Greek word the New Testament uses for church.)

* As the church began to institutionalize, local churches began to move away from a plural leadership to hierarchical, one-man leadership, under a regional bishop.

* The local “priest” eventually became the only person in a local church who was considered to be qualified to speak to the congregation.

* The best speakers among the “priests” began to be praised and glorified in the church in the same way that the best Greek orators were in society.

* By the late 300s,  the priest, John Chrysostom, was considered to be one of the most powerful orators in the ancient world.  His last name means: “golden mouth.”

In the Orthodox and Roman churches, oratory had to share the focus in worship services with the eucharist.  The altar table was usually in the center of the platform and the pulpit was off to one side.  However, during the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, put the pulpit in the center, denied the “real presence” of Christ in the elements, and made the weekly sermon the main focus of church meetings.

Since that time (especially among Protestants), a weekly one-man oration has become the essential element of a church service.

Anyone who has ever attended a church service is familiar with the sermon concept, but most of us are completely unaware of the biblical concept of mutual ministry, one to another, presented in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 14:26.  Many centuries have made us forget this powerful New Testament way of doing church.

I believe that God is calling His church back to the future — back to the Spirit-led sharing of the Gospel that turned the world upside down — back to 1 Corinthians 14:26.  Are we willing to go there?

If you want to see this in action, visit The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45.
