American Oxymoron, ISIS Videos, Prenatal Dismemberment

1 observation, 2 questions, and a Mother Teresa quotation:

An American oxymoron:  Our society advocates both prenatal care and prenatal killing.

If ISIS made and posted a video of a pro-choice, prenatal dismemberment, would that shock people enough to cause them to care about prenatal rights?

How can society promote prenatal care when we don’t care about prenatal rights?

Christaholics Out Of The Closet, Shouting It From The Housetops

What if salvation isn’t an emotional experience with God at an altar?  What if it isn’t choosing to respond to an altar call and/or repeating a prayer that someone else feeds you the words? What if , instead, salvation is an ongoing, transformational relationship with God that lasts the rest of your life?

When you read the Book of Acts and the Epistles you soon realize that a Christian is a Christaholic — someone who is completely overcome with and controlled by the living, resurrected Jesus.  A Christaholic is totally addicted to Christ.

When a group of alcoholics started a recovery group in 1935 AD at Akron, Ohio, they called it Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).  They wanted to keep it quiet and to keep their names out of sight.  However, when Jesus started His recovery group in about 30 AD in Galilee and Jerusalem, He told His followers to come out of the closet with their status and to go into all the world and shout it from the house tops — Christaholics Out of the Closet (COC).

shout it from the housetops

Christ wanted His followers to make a fuss about Him and His salvation.  And they did. An anonymous person (perhaps from Britain) said this about the early Christians:  “Everywhere they went there was either a revival or a riot; but everywhere I go people want to have a tea party.”

Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army, put it this way:  “Thrust the truth upon the attention of your fellow men.”

And Jesus put it this way:  “”I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.  But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.”

Are you a Christaholic like the early Christians?   So addicted to Jesus Christ that you continually crave a closer relationship with Him and are continually out of the closet publicly acknowledging your hunger for Him?

Did Catherine Booth encourage Quaker-style meetings?

For almost 7 years, we at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center in Nashville, TN have (instead of a 1-man sermon) been having participatory, Quaker-style, Sunday morning worship meetings where everyday people show and tell what God has done.  We are the only Salvation Army corps (church) I know of that meets like that.

Today I was reading The Salvation Army co-founder’s, Catherine Booth’s, sermon called “Aggressive Christianity” and I came across these words:

“Have meetings like the Friends (Quakers) if you like.”

Wow!  How encouraging that our non-traditional meetings were encouraged by Catherine Booth!

If you are in the Nashville area, come visit us and check out the Street-talk @ 225 Berry St., 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45 & Tuesday nights at 6:00.

The world’s most exciting sport!

What is the most challenging and exciting sport in the world?

–Playing follow the leader with the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

However, it’s not the world’s most popular sport.  Most people haven’t even heard about it.

People have heard about the religion named Christianity and they have heard about the historical Jesus; but they haven’t really heard that Jesus is alive and active in the 21st Century and challenging every person to follow and obey Him in day-to-day life.

So how do you get started in this sport?  Simple.  Listen to Jesus speaking in your heart, read His “words in red” in the New Testament, and find a team of passionate Christ-followers to spend time with.   Then begin to do what Jesus tells you to do and say what He tells you to say.

It’s that simple.  But, whew, it is the most challenging thing I’ve ever attempted in my life.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”  –Paul of Tarsus

A Miracle Sign On A Coke Can

I saw a miracle sign on a Coke can!

Last week I got a phone call saying that my mother, who is in a nursing home, needs to be on hospice care. When I hung up I was strongly feeling the need for some comfort. Although I only drink about one soft drink a month, I suddenly remembered that a case of Diet Cokes was under my desk. I reached and got one out of the box and opened it. As I was bringing it to my mouth I noticed this word on the side of the can: “Mom” and I was overcome by God’s love and presence!

I thank God, that He would be so intimately concerned with and involved in my life that He would give me a sign of His great love for me and my mother in such a moment!

1 Man Can’t Reflect The Body Of Christ — It Takes A Village

1 man can’t reflect the body of Christ.  That takes a village.

Christ-followers are puzzle pieces, each picturing a particular part of Christ. When a group gathers and each person present is allowed to openly participate and share his/her part, a glorious picture of the living Christ is presented in the meeting.

However, we’ve been trained in Western Christianity to only allow one “part” — the pastor — to share when we meet. Perhaps this constant focus on only one individual, robs us of Christ’s glory that abides in the whole group.

Now matter how skillful, dedicated, hard-working, talented, or even spiritual, one puzzle piece may be, that one puzzle piece can never show the entire picture.  We need all the pieces, working together, for that!

And that’s one of the foundation doctrines of Protestantism — the priesthood of the believer — every Christ-follower is called to do ministry.  (Another foundational doctrine is that Christ, not the Pope, is the Head of the church).  So why did the Reformers ignore their own teaching, put one man as head of each local church, and then tell everybody else to sit and listen to him?  Perhaps they were afraid to buck tradition.

However, the results are that in our church meetings we see one puzzle piece trying to be the whole picture.  And this gives us a seriously distorted view of the body of Christ.

Perhaps it is time for a  spiritual movement to rise up and engage in the full participation of all believers in church meetings!  If not now, when?  If not you, who?

If you are ever near Nashville, TN USA and want to see puzzle pieces in action, visit The Salvation Army Berry Street, where ordinary people show and tell what God has done:  Sunday mornings @ 10:45 & Tuesday nights @ 6:00, 225 Berry St., 37207.

The Band Of The Unplanned — Can You Hear It Calling?

God is looking for the band of the unplanned — agendaless bands of spiritual brothers and sisters who gather together to let Him lead and prompt them.

unplanned events

The band of the unplanned:

1) Banishes boredom by breaking our mold.

2) Steps beyond our Western tradition of tightly controlled religious services into the freedom of Spirit-led participation and interaction with God and with one another.

3) Moves beyond our comfort zone into the miracle zone where the living, resurrected Jesus personally takes the wheel and begins to steer and direct the meeting.

4) Sets a church service free to soar in the Spirit, like releasing a tethered balloon and letting it flow with the wind.

5) Turns spectators into Spirit-anointed participants who proclaim God’s power!

Try unplanned, unprogrammed  church @ The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207 on Sunday mornings @ 10:45 and/or Tuesday nights @ 6:00.

Got God Gushing In Your Gut?

God’s not dead in me! He’s dancing in my soul.

God’s a soul train–surging through my heart!

I’m infused and enthused with God.

God’s an inner engine empowering my passion to pursue Him.

God’s a heart spark igniting love, joy and peace.

God’s a dynamo enlightening all I know.

God’s glory and grace gush in my gut.

When all is dead and done, our relationship with God remains.

Got God?
