Unorthodox & Innovative Ideas For Christ-Followers!

sog Andre Cox

Innovative & unorthodox ideas for 21st Century Christ-followers:

1) Get on the streets and regularly prayer walk with the Blood & Fire Battle Flag.
2) Regularly post bold declarations about the living, resurrected Jesus Christ on Facebook and other social media.
3) Make your church/corps participatory — built around ordinary people sharing as prompted by the Spirit, rather than on a one-person sermon.
4) Refuse to watch, read, or listen to the trash in contemporary media.
5) Listen to the Spirit and do what He tells you.
6) Be a fool for Christ.
7) Wash somebody’s feet.
8) Get fired up and passionate about Christ! Let your emotions, compassion, and tears flow!

Yall! God wants to use all, both great and small, to obey the Spirit’s call!  Perhaps church is when people gather to share Christ with one another, to care for each other, and to actively engage in prayer — not just to sit and stare.

“I’ve been pondering the one-person-sermon. Are we missing something when our worship depends on one or two people? We may find it hard to think beyond the monologue sermons that have nurtured us. What if we came together, everyone bringing something — a hymn, a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation — all for the strengthening of the church? (1 Cor. 14:26)” –Jane Yoder-Short

“If you can but get the few set on fire, the fire will attract others.” –General Edward J. Higgins (a former international leader of The Salvation Army)

“What I see is the Army once again leading the church in proclaiming the name of Jesus in the public square. This is very exciting.” –Commissioner Barry Swanson (Territorial Commander of the USA Eastern Territory of The Salvation Army)

Hang & Praise Church

What is hang and praise church?  Hang-and-praise church is hanging out with a group of Christ-followers and sharing His praises with one another through song, stories, and Scriptures!

It is based on this description of how Jesus’ earliest disciples met:  “What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.”  –1 Corinthians 14:26

Here is some of my personal experience with hang-and-praise church:  As a freshman in college in the 70s, I walked into an unscripted, unprogrammed campus meeting and saw the living, resurrected Jesus Christ in action in the words, actions, and faces of ordinary people. I went back to my dorm that night, a changed man, with the fire of Christ burning in my heart. The rest of my college days I met weekly with this group, seeing the Holy Spirit prompt ordinary people to do amazing things.

After graduating I began to search for a church like those campus meetings (even moving back and forth across the country a couple of times). However, it was all to no avail, because I never found anything even a little bit like those meetings.

Then in 2008, the Salvation Army in Nashville approached my wife and me (who were employed by them), and asked if we would like to start a “non-traditional corps” (church) in East Nashville. We saw this as a God-sent opportunity to begin meetings similar to those I had experienced in college and The Army agreed.

We began to ask a different person each week to lead us in Spirit-anointed worship that goes anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes as the Spirit leads. Afterwards, we encourage the people present to listen to the Spirit and say or do whatever He says.

The results are always amazing. People share testimonies, Scriptures, prayer needs, short teachings, words of encouragement, prayers, gifts of the Spirit – and each week it all blends into a common theme.  It is obvious to all present that this is not random, but is being led by God.

Since we’ve started we’ve had more than 60 different worship leaders. Several have become regular attenders.

Here’s the amazing thing; in all this time (although we’ve had several hundred people meet with us at least once), we’ve never had anyone share false doctrine or something inappropriate.  In such a whacky world as ours, that’s got to be evidence of God’s presence and protection.

Several times we have literally seen this Scripture fulfilled in our midst as a first time visitor opens her/his heart before God:  ”But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.”  1 Corinthians 14:24-25

In hang-and-praise church meetings, you see people transformed right in front of your eyes. One Hindu man began to attend. We welcomed him and loved him. After about a year, he came to me and told me that he is no longer a Hindu, but is now a believer in Christ. Now, several years later, he is a mighty man of God who testifies, prays with people, witnesses, and reads the Bible one to two hours a day.

When we have a conversation with a friend or family member, we don’t want every word to be scripted. We want a two-way conversation that is spontaneous and from the heart. Why should church be any different?

I encourage everyone to step into hang-and-praise worship meetings. If you can’t find one in your town, start one in your living room. It only takes two or three people (see Matthew 18:20). Everybody gather, listen to the Spirit, and do whatever He tells you to. You will be astonished by the results!

If you live in Nashville, experience hang-and-praise church at The Salvation Army Berry Street on Sunday mornings at 10:45 and Tuesday nights at 6:00 — 225 Berry St. 37207.

Peace Is Possible Between Israel & The Palestinians

Is peace possible between the Palestinians and Israel?  Yes, but there needs to be a radical change in methodology.  Here’s how — begin systematically applying loving, non-cooperative, non-violence modeled after Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Independence Movement and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the American Civil Rights Movement.

India faced the most powerful empire in world history and there was no way that they would ever gain their independence by violence.  However, through love, non-cooperation, and non-violence, India gained not only independence, but also friendship with Britain.

African-Americans, after 250 years of cruel, violent, and bitter oppression by the Americans, had no chance of ever gaining their freedom and their rights through violence. But they, also, used the power of love, non-cooperation, and non-violence to radically transform American and achieve freedom and equal legal status.

Perhaps the Palestinians should face the facts that violence is never going to secure their freedom from Israel.  Maybe they could take all the money, time, energy, and suffering that they are spending on violence against Israel and use that same effort in non-cooperative, non-violence against Israel.

What if tens of thousands of Palestinians watched the movie Gandhi, renounced violence, and began to apply Gandhi’s methods against Israel?  What if they overflowed Israel’s jails with non-violent resisters?  Israel’s military couldn’t fight that kind of resistance.  Before long Israel’s jails would be filled with peaceful men, women, and children.  Their infrastructure would collapse and they would be forced to make peace and compromise with the Palestinians.

So, is Israel ever going to be pals with the Palestinians?  They will if the Palestinians begin to use Jesus-style, radical non-violence (as modeled by Gandhi and King).  Radical obedience to the methods of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ can bring a just peace! Violence cannot!

(Another example of the power of non-violent direct action is the American Anti-Slavery Movement in the 19th Century, led by William Lloyd Garrison.)

Don’t Be A What Without A Why!

A person with no purpose wanders about as a what without a why!  A man without a mission meanders in meaninglessness.

May the Son rise in your soul today!  Sing in the Sonshine, seek Christ everyday and try to live His way!

When sin is within the heart, you can’t live without it.  However, there is one who can clean the human heart — the living Jesus Christ!

Lessons learned by lecture tend to be mere mental conjecture.  Experience the living Christ for yourself!

Talk to God — not in religious language — but like you are talking to a friend. Ask Him to show or reveal himself to you. Ask Him to show you if Jesus Christ is really God in human form. Then give Him a chance to answer you. Remain open. Don’t close your mind or heart. And get ready for a flash of insight that will change your life!

Attention: Ember bearers who once bore the flame of God in your heart during the Jesus Movement and early charismatic days; it’s time to rekindle, to reignite, to break out in passionate fire for God again, beyond anything you experienced in the past!

If you had God’s fire; get it back! If you need help getting the fire back, come to The Salvation Army Berry Street on Sunday mornings at 10:45 or Tuesday nights at 6:00  and let us pray over you. God will reignite you, if you let Him! (225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.)

Perhaps there are much more effective ways for the church to preach and teach than one-man, weekly lecturing or sermonizing.  What if God wants to have direct control of church meetings instead of just being a celestial spectator?

What I Learned From Corrie Ten Boom, Andraé Crouch, Dennis Bennett, David du Plessis, Chuck Smith, Kathryn Kuhlman, Jack Hayford, and Walter Martin

In the mid 1970s I attended Melodyland School of Theology in Southern California for a year.  While there I was blessed to be taught by many powerful men and women of God. Here are 8 powerful lessons that I learned from 8 different people:

Melodyland

1)  Obey God and do what is morally right no matter what anybody thinks about it or what the consequences are.  Because of their love for Christ, Corrie Ten Boom and her family hid Jewish people from the Nazis during World War II.  They were eventually caught and sent to concentration camps.  All of them died in the camps but Corrie.  When she was released, she forgave her captors and traveled the world beautifully sharing God’s love.

2) The Spirit-led, passionate expression of your love for Christ will deeply touch many lives, crossing cultural and racial barriers. Andraé Crouch was a passionate Gospel singer and songwriter.  As an African American in the 70’s, he crossed racial barriers and performed at Melodyland many times. His music was powerfully from his heart, anointed by God, and overcame walls between people

3) The Holy Spirit can move mightily in any church if we will set aside our traditions and begin to obey His promptings.  Dennis Bennett was an Episcopalian priest who experienced speaking in tongues through the Holy Spirit.  He boldly shared his experience with his Episcopal congregation and many of them experienced the Spirit’s gift of tongues.  This was the beginning of the Charismatic Movement that swept through traditional, mainline churches impacting every denomination.

4) Love and embrace people with the love of Christ, whether you agree with them or not.  David du Plessis was an early Pentecostal pioneer from South Africa.  He began an ongoing dialogue with the Catholic Church in Rome, making friends with many Bishops and Cardinals and helping to inspire the Catholic Charismatic Movement.

5) Share God’s truth in contemporary ways.  Chuck Smith embraced the hippies, started the Calvary Chapel Movement, and helped start the Jesus Movement and the Contemporary Christian Music Movement.

6) Flowing with the Holy Spirit and obeying His promptings is much more powerful than preaching a sermon.  Kathryn Kuhlman conducted monthly healing meetings in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for years.  Rather than preaching a traditional sermon, she just moved around the platform and said or did whatever she felt prompted to do by the Spirit. As a result, many people were touched by the living, resurrected Jesus and healed both spiritually and physically.

7) Ordinary people can powerfully minister to one another in church if they are given the opportunity.  Jack Hayford pastored The Church on the Way in Van Nuys, California. During the Sunday morning service he would get the people into small groups and have them pray for one another.

8) Know the Bible.  Discern and refuse to accept or follow false teaching.  Walter Martin wrote the book The Kingdom of the Cults which exposes the errors of some of the largest and most influential cults and taught believers how to speak the truth in love.

TN Commissioner of Agriculture, Cotton Ivy, at a Pentecostal Church

Cotton Ivy was the Commissioner of Agriculture for the state of Tennessee from 1989-1995.  The building in the picture is named after him:  the L.H. “Cotton” Ivy Laboratory at Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Once when I was a student at the University of Tennessee Martin, Cotton Ivy asked me and a few of my friends if we would like to go to church with him one night.  We said yes, and he drove us to a Pentecostal church in Kennett, Missouri.

I had never been to a Pentecostal church before and had no idea what to expect.  (I grew up Presbyterian.)  The small building was packed with people. Cotton led my friends and me down to the front row.

To begin the meeting, the preacher stood up and passionately quoted a Bible verse:  The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.  Then he said to the congregation:  “Now we are going to stomp on the devil!”

Suddenly a small band began to play loudly and almost everybody in the building (except for my friends and me), including Cotton Ivy, began to jump up and down to the beat of the drums, stomping on the devil.  I was quite uncomfortable, however, after about 5 minutes, I began to jump and stomp on the devil with them.  We did this for about a half an hour.

Then they had an enthusiastic revival service with singing and preaching.  After the preaching people began to run around the pews shouting loudly and circling the building over and over, while the band played enthusiastically.

My friends and I soon joined in and began to run with the Pentecostals (I’ve never run with the bulls).  We were running so fast, that I had to grab hold of the corner pews to keep myself from crashing into a wall every time I turned a corner.

By this time, I was feeling something stirring in my heart.  After we all stopped running, Cotton asked me and my friends if we had ever been baptized in water.  None of us had been.  So Cotton asked the preacher if we could have a baptism.

So, one after another, we were baptized.  When each one of us came up from the water, we felt so excited about God that we each one ran around the building by ourselves, shouting and praising God.  Afterwards, the band kicked in for more rejoicing and praising God.  The meeting lasted for many hours.

Although, I’ve never run around in a church service again, the memory of that night still excites me and sometimes makes me smile.  I am so glad that Cotton Ivy wasn’t just about agriculture, insurance, and comedy, but also wanted to see a spiritual harvest in people’s lives.

His love for the living, resurrected Jesus was contagious.  Like the Pentecostal song says:  “I got it, I got it.  Something ’bout the power of the Holy Ghost, I just can’t explain it, but I got it.”

The flag in the picture is The Salvation Army flag.  The red stands for the blood of Jesus, the yellow for the fire of the Holy Spirit, and the blue for a lifestyle of following and obeying the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.  The boldness I learned from Cotton Ivy has helped me to carry that flag around Nashville, Tennessee, praying for revival and spiritual awakening in our city! Lord, send your fire!

Billy Graham Statue With The Blood & Fire Spiritual Warfare Flag

Here’s a picture of the Billy Graham statue in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, holding the Blood & Fire Battle Flag (The Salvation Army Flag).  The red represents the blood of Jesus, the yellow stands for the fire of the Holy Spirit, and the blue represents a lifestyle of daily following and obeying the living, resurrected, Jesus Christ.

And now, a few quotations from Billy Graham:

“My one purpose in life is to help people find a personal relationship with God, which, I believe, comes through knowing Christ.”

“I am convinced that when a man sincerely searches for God with all his heart, God will reveal Himself in some way.”

“Being a Christian is more than just an instantaneous conversion; it is like a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Christ.”

“Prayer is a two-way conversation between you and God.”

“A real Christian is the one who can give his pet parrot to the town gossip.”

“God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’”

“Self-centered indulgence, pride and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle.”

“I feel sorry for the man who has never known the bracing thrill of taking a stand and sticking to it fearlessly. Moral courage has rewards that timidity can never imagine. Like a shot of adrenaline, it floods the spirit with vitality.”

“You cannot come to Christ unless the Spirit of God brings you. But what if you ignore His warnings? Then you are in the gravest danger, for some day God will no longer be speaking to you. Then it will be too late. Come to Christ while there is still time. Christ, God’s greater Ark, stands ready to welcome you to safety today.”

Why I Want To Quench The Spirit

I want to quench the Spirit (even though the Bible says “quench not the Spirit“) because:

1)  The Spirit tells me to do inconvenient things that I don’t want to do and/or that are out of my comfort zone.  (For example, He frequently tells me to pick up other people’s litter off the ground.)

2)  The Spirit won’t let me enjoy my wrongful choices, but stirs up my conscience, continually making me aware of my sinful behaviors and thoughts; and clamoring for me to stop them.  (He won’t let me get by with much — sometimes He actually tells me to slow down and drive the speed limit.)

3)  The Spirit prompts me to say and/or do things that I find to be humbling, embarrassing, lowly, wild, and make other people think that I’m weird.  (Not too long ago He told me to literally wash a friend’s feet.)

4)  The Spirit wakes me up in the mornings with strong words burning in my heart and tells me to post them on my blog and on Facebook, even though those words might offend someone and/or get me rejected.  (One of my best friends tells people, behind my back, that I’m rigid and legalistic.)

5)  The Spirit prompts me to say and do nice things to people who offend me, hurt me, and/or intentionally do me wrong — to actually pray for His blessings on them — and to let go of any “right” that I feel that I have to be offended by what they say or do to me.  (I recently had a plumber charge me much more money than I thought he should to replace a faucet and I felt cheated.  Now, every time I take a shower, the Spirit tells me to pray for God’s blessings on him and his company.)

6)  The Spirit tells me not to watch TV shows, movies, or other media (or listen to music) that promote vulgarity, disrespect, meaningless violence, casual sex, bad attitudes, meanness, self-destructive behaviors or other things that go against a lifestyle of daily following and obeying the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.  (That drastically limits my media consumption.)

So can you see why I want to quench the Spirit?  To ignore Him?  To drown out His voice?  (And those are just a few reasons.)

However, although I greatly want to quench the Spirit, I love God more than my own desires, so, although it sometimes hurts a great deal, I often choose to deny my own desires and to do what the Spirit tells me, anyway.

And lest you think me a hero, I’m not doing anything that the lowliest soldier doesn’t do much better than me.  Even the lowest ranking soldier obeys his/her commander rather than his/her own desires.  A soldier doesn’t want to wallow in blood and guts and receive excruciating pain by being shot or having a limb blown off; but he or she does it because she/he values a cause more than her/his own desires and personal comfort.

If a soldier, for her/his country, will faithfully obey commands that she/he doesn’t personally want to obey; why don’t more Christ-followers obey the uncomfortable/painful commands of the Spirit, even when they don’t want to?

quench not the Spirit
