Jesus is the program, the teaching, and the spiritual life!

What if in church we:

* Set aside our program and let the living Jesus, Himself, be the way (Is a program the way we do church or is Jesus the way we do church?);

* Set aside our teaching and let the living Jesus, Himself, be the truth (Is a teaching the center of our church meetings or is Jesus the teaching?)?

–Then we would see the life of Jesus flowing through the people present in the meeting and releasing spiritual awakening in and through ordinary men and women!  We would see Jesus, Himself, being the program, the teaching, and the spiritual life!

the way, the truth, and the life

Here’s my paraphrase of John 14:6:  “Jesus is the program, the teaching, and the spiritual life!”

Come and see for yourself every Sunday moring at 10:45 @ 225 Berry St., Nashville 37207.

The Difference Between Daylight Savings Time (DST) & Soul Savings Time (SST)

Daylight Savings Time (Chronos) or Soul Savings Time (Kairos)
–Before we went to bed in the USA on Saturday night we sprang forward into Daylight Savings Time (DST). Now we’re no longer living on Standard Time (ST) plus we’re “saving” an hour of daylight every night. (Actually we didn’t change the amount of daylight, but we shifted it from morning till evening so that we can enjoy it more.)
–When I was in college there was a moment in my life when God sprang me forward into Soul Savings Time (SST). Now I’m no longer bound by my generation (my time period on earth). God literally shifted me into another type of time. Since that moment, instead of just merely passing time (what the ancient Greeks called chronos), I’m living my life by eternal time (what the ancient Greeks called kairos).
–Soul Savings Time has made such an incredible difference in my life:
* My desires and my perspective on life were changed in an instant and then have continued to change day by day ever since that first moment of transformation.
* God’s presence became more real to me than the material items in my environment. (He’s more real to me than the chair I’m sitting in.)
* I was overwhelmed by a beautiful sense of God’s love for me.
* I was (and continue to be day by day) set free from all sorts of bondage, torment, guilt, anger, hurt, deception, fear, insecurity, shame, addiction, and craving.
* My heart was filled with a burning desire to daily follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ (and that desire has never let go of me).
* I have an instant connection when I meet other people who are living on SST.
* When I read books by SST people who died centuries ago, I have an amazing, instant connection with them. (Therefore many of my very best friends left earth centuries ago, yet I have a beautiful connection with them.)
* I have seen and experienced too many amazing (and miraculous) things to count and my life has been filled with joy, peace, love, and wondrous excitement.
* My disappointments, heart-breaks, pain, and tribulations have been transformed by the presence and perspective of God into personal and spiritual growth. Every “setback” has set me up to get stronger in God.
* I am about to turn 64 on chronos time, yet I am still dreaming about and working hard to change the world. I have a vision of a world-wide spiritual movement starting in Nashville and transforming multitudes from chronos time to kairos time. One of the keys to the vision in my heart is the transformation of church from sticking to the clock (time conscious human control and programming) into allowing ordinary people freedom to flow in the Holy Spirit in unprogrammed meetings.

Leap-Of-Faith-Based Church Meetings! (Letting everyday people step out in the Spirit.)

What if it took faith to attend a church service? (Would a faith-based church meeting even work?) Perhaps now is the time for churches to take a leap of faith and to allow ordinary people to speak out in Sunday worship as they are led by the Spirit!

leap of faith

Everything that happens in most church services has a prearranged outcome.  There is no uncertainty or spontaneity. Being in the service requires no faith, just passive attendance. However, as Santosh Kalwar wrote:  “Life remains unchanged till a leap of faith runs towards heaven.” Perhaps that is why church seems to have so little impact on our contemporary culture.

The very concept of faith requires believing enough to take action when you don’t know the outcome (“taking a leap of faith;” “stepping out in faith;”).  Believing without taking action falls short of faith.  The Bible puts it this way in James 2:17: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (NIV) However, “one leap of faith can change your life forever.” –Robert Holden

To truly experience God we must be willing to take a risk and step out of the routine — out of the planned.  Like Mandy Hale says: “You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go, and see what happens.”

Are we “cheating God” by keeping church meetings confined to a closely controlled plan? Jen Stephens puts it this way:  “If we never had the courage to take a leap of faith, we’d be cheating God out of a chance to mount us up with wings like eagles and watch us soar.”

If we really want to encounter God, perhaps we should open up church meetings to the control of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ. Alyssa Urbano puts it this way: “Life is a gamble. There are no sureties. If you want something badly, you’d have to trust your heart and your instincts and then take a leap of faith.”

“Taking a leap of faith is essentially a personal willingness to take a chance.” –Bridget Riepl

“Nobody gets argued all the way into becoming a believer on the sheer basis of logic and reason. That requires a leap of faith.” –Francis Collins

“There are many talented people who haven’t fulfilled their dreams because they over thought it, or they were too cautious, and were unwilling to make the leap of faith.”  –James Cameron

“It’s called a leap of faith, not ‘a drag your feet to faith,” so quite analyzing and get moving.” –Blake Franks

The Bible defines faith in Hebrews 11:1 this way: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Faith is about “what we hope for” and “what we do not see.”  When we know the outcome and see it printed on a Sunday bulletin and/or repeated the same way week after week, we need no faith.

So what if we tore up our prearranged plans and agendas and based church services on Sunday morning leaps of faith?

” Don’t be afraid to take that leap of faith; You have nothing to lose but fear.” –unknown

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” –Martin Luther King, Jr.

So where will people get the opportunity to step out in faith — to express their faith in their works? Perhaps we should give them the opportunity to leap out in faith during Sunday worship meetings. According to William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, “Faith and works should travel side-by-side, step answering to step, like the legs of men walking. First faith, and then works; and then faith again, and then works again — until they can scarcely distinguish which is the one and which is the other.” Maybe church meetings should not be limited to passive, pew-sitting “faith,” but also allow active, Spirit-led interaction.

“‘It’s impossible,’ said pride. ‘It’s risky,’ said experience. ‘It’s pointless,’ said reason. ‘Give it a try,’ whispered the heart.” –unknown

Give leap-of-faith church meetings at try, every Sunday morning @ The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207 at 10:45.

What Color Is The Dress — Oops I Mean Flag?

What color is the dress — oops I mean flag?

IMAG0857-1

Let’s address the question. Take a close look. Different people see this flag differently.

Some of the colors (and images) in this pic are just reflections onto the flag — the white spots for instance. Those colors are not actually a part of the flag.

For some this flag is just a piece of cloth as common as an ordinary dress. However, for others this flag is a reflection of God’s glory.

This flag is The Salvation Army Flag.  In reality it has only 3 colors: red, yellow, and blue (plus the black lettering that reads “BLOOD & FIRE”).

The blue stands for an upright lifestyle of utmost integrity.

The red represents the way to begin to live such a lifestyle — the blood of Jesus that sets us free from our misery, self-destruction, discouragement, defeat, and negativity; and obtains forgiveness for us so that we can start over with a clean slate, a clean heart, and a clear conscience.

The yellow stands for the supernatural power available to human beings to consistently live a transformed lifestyle of love, joy, inner peace, and victory over wrong thinking, wrong speaking, and wrongdoing — the power and real presence of the Holy Spirit.

Come and see this flag at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207 every Sunday morning at 10:45 am.  (Or see a flag like it at any Salvation Army worship center, corps, or social service office in the world!)

Some Things Are BAN (Beyond the Ability of Nature)

If nothing can’t do anything, how could it make everything?

Some things are obviously beyond the ability of nature (BAN).

* A turtle on a fence post? BAN.
* Cave wall writings? BAN.
* The origin of life? BAN.
* The Egyptian pyramids? BAN.
* Human consciousness and intelligence? BAN.
* A beer can? BAN.

BAN

Things that are beyond the ability of nature did not create themselves.  They could only happen with outside help. BAN things are outside of natural causes.  Otherwise wars would be natural disasters.

So many things in your daily life are beyond the ability of nature.  You are continually in touch with the supernatural, even if you are unaware of it.  The truth that someone put a turtle on a fence post is not dependent on the turtle’s awareness or acknowledgement of the fact.

Being Spirit Led Is Like A Ship Sailing (Louis Lallemant Quotes)

French Jesuit priest, Louis Lallemant, taught how to be led by the Spirit in the 1600s. Here are come quotes from his book La Doctrine Spirituelle (The Spiritual Doctrine).

ship sailing

“We may compare those who are led by the gifts of the Spirit to a ship running full-sail before the wind.”

“In almost everything we are led by nature and human views. We follow but little, if at all, the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

“Few abandon themselves to the leadings of the Holy Spirit.”

“The spiritual life consists in the operations of God in the soul, and following the movements of His Spirit in whatever direction He may impel us.”

“We must regulate our behavior by the Spirit of God, conforming ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

“We seize upon every manner of thing without being to satisfy ourselves.  God alone can make us happy.”

“Our happiness consists in the subjection of the heart to the empire of God.”

“The more we renounce ourselves to unite ourselves to God, the more we cease to be miserable.”

“Few have sufficient courage to reach the point of grace and of glory which God desires for them.”

“Some think they do wonders because they preach powerful discourses, well composed, well prepared, and delivered with grace.  They deceive themselves.”

“Pay great attention to divine inspirations.”

“The reason why we are so little illuminated by the Holy Spirit and so little guided by the motions of His gifts is that our soul is sensual and full of a multitude of earthly thoughts, desires, and affections, which extinguish within us the Spirit of God.”

“We are so full of illusions and so little on our guard against them, that we deceive ourselves continually.”

“Enter into the things of God by a submissive love rather than by the force of reasoning.”

“Consult the interior voice of God’s Spirit in all things, lest the human spirit should prevent its operation.’

Church Orbiting The Son!

(I wrote this poem this morning about 7 years at Berry Street and [to my surprise] it made the shape of a “leaning 7” on the right hand side. The 3 plus signs at the end [+++] represent the 3 crosses.)

–Celebrating 7 Years @ The Salvation Army Berry Street—

For 7 years we’ve orbited the Son,
The living, resurrected Jesus Christ,
Present when we gather in His name,
And shifted our attention to His leading
And away from our structure and program.
Ordinary people have obeyed His promptings
And shared amazing, anointed, heart-felt words.
Joys, victories, insights, fears, tears, & heart-breaks,
Have all come together, revolving around the Son,
Gloriously reflecting Jesus’ radiance and Light.
Now, humbled in His awesome presence,
And called to be a Joshua generation,
We cry “Down with the walls!”
Let all our Jerichos fall
And Jesus reign
Supreme!
+++

7 years around the Son

Here is what 2 people have said about Berry Street:

“Wow! Think of all the people who have come in and out of those doors and experienced the unhindered presence of God.”  –Lara Landon

“The ministry has made a difference in the neighborhood and the city. Where the Holy Spirit is free to move, lives change. Souls are saved.”  –Phyllis Clayton

In the Bible, Joseph spent 7 years preparing Egypt with grain and bread; and then they spent 7 years feeding the world.  At Berry Street, we’ve spent 7 years learning to flow with the Spirit’s promptings; and now may God use Berry Street as a prototype to help feed the Bread of Life (the living, resurrected Jesus Christ) to the world!

Come, get a taste of Berry Street, every Sunday morning @ 10:45–225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207.
