What Can Nothing Do?

What can nothing do?  Absolutely nothing!

If you capture some nothing in a science lab (creating a vacuum) can your sample of nothing do enough in a scientific lab to justify the belief of many modern “intellectuals” that nothing produced everything? Or will your sample of nothing simply hang around doing nothing.

So if nothing never makes (or does) anything, then the idea that nothing made everything is nothing but a myth, (even though it is frequently prompted by people with advanced degrees in science, but a seeming lack of logical thinking).

Since only nothing comes from nothing, if you think that you came from nothing, you will feel like you are nothing.  That way of thinking is nothing but depressing and it’s nothing to play around with.

To feel like the incredible someone who you really are, you need to think that you were made by a good, loving, and great Maker. You deserve to feel amazingly special (there’s nothing like that feeling) and that’s a great reason to believe in God!

At The Salvation Army Berry Street we don’t put our trust in nothing. We trust in the Holy Spirit, let Him personally direct the meeting, and every week He does so many amazing somethings that we are all in awe!

Come and see the Spirit’s incredible somethings every Sunday at 10:45 am. — 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207.  It will give you something to think about!

Pre-traditional Church

Tradition (even church tradition) has not always existed.  The Christian church began as a mighty movement of the Holy Spirit with no tradition.  It was led by the Spirit rather than contained by tradition.

The New Testament was written during the pre-tradition era when church was a spiritual movement.   However as time went on church gradually morphed into an institution which culminated with Roman Emperor Constantine giving the church political influence and power, and the Bishop of Rome being proclaimed as the head of the church as the Pope.  (The living, resurrected Jesus Christ is the actual Head of the church.)

The Orthodox, Protestant, and independent churchs also contain (and are contained by) much tradition.  Although the Protestant Reformers proclaimed that tradition should be set aside for Scripture, they kept much old tradition and created lots of new tradition.

1 to all?  or All as 1?

Traditional church, no matter the denomination, has 1 professional and/or ordained pastor, priest, preacher, clergyman, or minister (almost always a man) speak to (and do religious things for) all the rest of the people, while they are required to passively and quietly sit and listen.  It very rarely moves beyond this traditional format (usually only during times of great spiritual awakening, but then quickly reverts to the 1 to all format).

Pre-traditional church, however, allows all the people to actively minister to one another as led by the living Holy Spirit.  All speak as one voice because they don’t just share from their own mind, ego, or opinion.  Rather they speak as prompted by God.

Pre-traditional church is described in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 14:26 like this:  “When you come together, everyone has a psalm, a hymn, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation . . .”  Pre-traditional church is very rare.  However, around the world it is making a comeback.  The house church movement in China has been pre-traditional, as has the very small organic church movement in the West.

If you would like to experience first-hand a pre-traditional church, visit The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville — where ordinary people, as led by the Spirit, show and tell what God has done — Sunday mornings at 10:45, 225 Berry St., 37207.

Here Ya Go — Original Organic Church Comments

When church is unplugged from programs and unleashed from sermons, people are free to obey the present moment promptings of the Spirit and God is powerfully present.

Does church constantly contain God in your comfort zone or does church compel you into continuous commitment to God’s uncomfortable calling, compassion, creativity, and challenges!

Perhaps church is supposed to be a bouquet of believers blessing one another, rather than one solitary speaker. (1 Corinthians 14:26).

People grow spiritually by God’s spontaneous life flow. “Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.” –Jesus

If you are a believer, you are not just called to sit under a priest, a preacher, a clergyman, a minister, or a pastor — you are one!

God is looking for a generation that will hear and obey the Holy Spirit’s voice, rather than the voices of men, of comfort, and/or of custom. If you are a Christ-follower, then (regardless of your occupation) you are a minister and you are as called as any other minister on earth.

This idea was one of the central themes of the Protestant Reformation and is known as “the priesthood of the believer.” However, unfortunately, it was only taught as a doctrine, but not actually put into practice in church worship meetings. Perhaps it is time to let ordinary people live it in church. The world has seen men proclaimed as great ministers of God . . . Maybe now the world needs to see the great God working in and through everyday men and women.

The way to grow is to go. Abraham was told to leave his familiar comfort zone and to enter the unknown. His simple obedience led to the world’s 3 great monotheistic (belief in One God) religions. Jesus told His disciples to go into all the world and tell people about Him — to “shout it from the housetops.” Their obedience led to a world-changing spiritual movement that continues 2,000 years later and to the largest religion in the world.

God is still speaking today. Amazing good and grace will spring forth if we will but begin to obey the holy promptings of God to leave our comfort zone and “go tell it on the mountain.”

The purpose of church is not just to provide religious teaching and entertainment, but to hook people up with the life-transforming and heart-transforming presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Profound question . . . If the living God, the same God who led the children of Israel with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, is present when we meet in His name, why do we need a professional and a program to lead a Sunday morning church service?

When ordinary members of the body of Christ freely flow in the Spirit, glorious beauty radiates from everyday people.  When everyday believers begin to share Christ humbly from the heart, a mighty move of God will start! “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!”

Recently at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville a high school student shared how God is working in her life and you could feel His fire burning in her heart as she spoke. It was contagious and begin to spread from heart to heart.

Perhaps church services could move beyond attenders sitting to hear sermons; and let them stand to share stories about how the living, resurrected Jesus Christ is actively working in their lives.

Maybe a pastor’s job in a church service is like a football official — to oversee the action and only interrupt if there is an infraction. (1 Corinthians 14:26)

Christianity is . . .
not teaching, not theology;
not tradition, not technique;
but transformation through
the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Creative Texting Ideas

Here’s a great texting idea.  Text this:

U R needed to actively participate in chURch.

Or this:  When the preacher is the only one allowed to speak out in church, u r left out, so perhaps we should spell one-speaker church like this “ch__ch.”

Or:  To have a full experience of “c-h-u-r-c-h,” u r needed to actively participate, not just passively sit and spectate.

Also, you may be interested in the world’s most unusual ringtone.

Robert Kennedy’s “Ask Why? . . . Ask Why Not?” Applied To Church

I like to apply the idea from Bobby Kennedy’s “Ask why? . . . Ask why not?” quote to church.  Here goes:

“There are those that look at church as a programmed religious service and ask why?  I dream of church as spontaneous and participatory and ask why not.?”

Here’s a bit of history/background:

Senator Robert F. Kennedy used these words as the theme for his 1968 presidential campaign:  “There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why?  I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

President John F. Kennedy said: “You see things, and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were and I say; ‘Why not?'” in a 1963 speech to the Irish parliament and correctly attributed the quotation to George Bernard Shaw.

However, Shaw’s attribution has been so overshadowed by Robert Kennedy’s rendition that in W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 novel, Shoeless Joe — the inspiration for the movie, Field of Dreams —  he mistakenly attributed the quote to Robert Kennedy.

The phrase originated in Shaw’s play, Back to Methuselah (1921), pt. I, act I: “You see things; and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?'”

From Health to Helplessness in 30 Minutes (And Back)

Yesterday I went from health to helplessness in 30 minutes. I was mowing my yard and suddenly got stung multiple times by yellow jackets. The sudden stinging pain was shocking. As I ran into my house I felt a yellow jacket lodged in my sweaty hair. It took a couple of minutes to get it out and then it began to fly around and I finally chased it out of the door.

Meanwhile I was beginning to feel a burning pain all over my body. So I jumped in the shower. But the growing, gruesome pain was spreading. As I dried off I saw red hives popping up all over my body. Then my lips began to get numb. I told my wife I needed to go to the emergency room.

As we arrived, my tongue was swelling and getting numb and my whole body was burning. I was soon lying on a gurney, nauseated, hurting, and helpless, being cared for by two nurses who were sticking me with needles, but I was so miserable I hardly noticed.

One of them said, “We’ve got the medicine (Epinephrine) going in,” and all of a sudden my vision began to slowly darken, like someone was dimming the lights. I finally closed my eyes thinking I was going out and praying. However, after a couple of minutes the pain began to ease a wee bit. Over the next two hours, helplessly hooked to a heart monitor and IV, I gradually got better. I’m still not completely back to normal today, although I’m getting close. Mostly, I’m so glad I’m not where I was yesterday!

It is so easy to take life and health (ours and other’s) for granted. It’s very humbling when we realize that we humans are only one sting, or bite, or infection, or accident, or evil act of violence away from helplessness.

Once before I had experienced the pain of being stung by yellow jackets, but then, I had no allergic reaction. So I was stunned and shocked by what happened yesterday. However, through it all, I knew that the living, resurrected Jesus was in me and with me. I am so grateful for that!

“No Conformity To Any Church Forms Shall Hinders Us!”

Quotes from:  The History of The Salvation Army, Volume One, by Robert Sandall

salvation army history volume 1

“We have been trying and, we thank God, with no little success, to break loose from all the trammels of custom and propriety which may in any degree have hindered or hampered us in the past. The dreadful tendency to settle down is apparent in connection with all religious work. We mean to gain the ear of the people for our Master, and we are more than ever determined that no conformity to any church forms or ideas shall hinder us.” –General William Booth

“We were set upon by a band of ruffians shouting, howling, and pulling us about. Some of the sisters were very roughly handled indeed. One man was knocked down and left with a black eye, but we stood our ground. They pelted us with all sorts of things and flour in abundance. I was as white as a miller. We had a good meeting, and one man professed to be saved.” –Elijah Cadman

“We in The (Salvation) Army have learned to thank God for eccentricity and extravagance, and to consecrate them to His service. We have men in our ranks who can rollick for the Lord. Thank God for the dare-devils! They led us on the forward march. They have helped to keep us free from the shackles of respectability. They keep us passionate.” –General Bramwell Booth

“William Booth said, after bemoaning that talking at conferences was largely monopolized by ‘dried up theoretical legislators’: ‘I want the holiest and most devoted men and women to come to the front. They have a right to speak. They have something to say.'” –Robert Sandall
