Protestant Reformation — A Half-Way Measure?

Did the Protestant Reformation only go 1/2 way?  Two of the main Bible doctrines that were brought to light by Protestant Reformers (Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, and others) were:  1) justification by faith (which was enthusiastically embraced); and  2) the priesthood of the believer, sometimes referred to as the universal priesthood (which was mostly ignored).

“We are all equally priests.”  –Martin Luther

“We are all consecrated priests through baptism, as St. Peter in 1 Peter 2:9 says, ‘You are a royal priesthood and a priestly kingdom,’ and Revelation 5:10, ‘Through your blood you have made us into priests and kings.'”  —Martin Luther

Perhaps it is time to finish the second half of the Reformation by recognizing every believer as an equal minister and allowing all believers to share with, preach to, and minister to one another in church meetings.

The typical church invitation (by flyer or personally) invites you to come and hear a “priestly” or “ordained” minister speak.   At The Salvation Army Berry Street we invite you to come and see God do amazing things through ordinary people functioning as the priesthood of believers — Sunday mornings at 10:45, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207.

Irrigation, Living Water & New Wineskins

Our dry souls need to be irrigated with much Living Water.  An effective irrigation system has many waterspouts, not just one.  God’s living water flows lavishly in church meetings when many people are free to share the living water that God has put in their heart.  The Living Water is limited when only one special man is allowed to speak.

“No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” -Jesus Christ

New wine is the Holy Spirit — the Living Water. Perhaps old wineskins are customary ways of doing church and new wineskins are fresh, creative ways of doing church.

Participatory, organic church, based on open sharing and testimonies, rather than on a one-man sermon, is an amazing new wineskin capable of holding much new wine!

Get irrigated!  Experience it for yourself in Nashville, TN — Sundays at 10:45 am., 225 Berry St., 37207 — at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center where everyday people irrigate one another.  You’ll be glad you got irrigated and full of New Wine!

A choir is more than only one person singing. Perhaps a church service should be more than only one person speaking. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26)

Dorothy In Oz, Wheels, Soul Train, TEAM, Yall, Lights, & A Quiz (Examples/Metaphors of Participatory Church)

Some metaphors for participatory church:

Experiencing participatory church at Berry Street is like Dorothy stepping into a world of living color when she enters the land of Oz in “The Wizard of Oz.”

Church is often like a unicycle, focused on one big wheel. However, perhaps church could be more effective if it was a soul train rolling along on many wheels all working together to support one another as they obediently turn in response to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Team Church (Together Everyone Accomplishes More) — Maybe God has called His church to be a team, supporting and ministering to one another (“provoking one another to love and good works”), rather than an audience watching a program.

Did you know that when the New Testament uses the word “you” it frequently means “yall” (the Southern American English plural for you)? Yet we mistakenly think it is referring to us as an individual. So many of God’s commands and promises are to the body of Christ (the church) and not just to us as an individual. “Christ in yall, the hope of glory!” We really do need to obey the New Testament “one another” commands!

Perhaps church needs to release the sound of the silenced ones, people in the pews who have so much authenticity to share — answered prayers, spiritual insights, profound biblical wisdom, gifts of the Spirit, life lessons, miracle experiences, etc.

Even a small room needs more than one light and a meeting room needs dozens of lights (and a convention room needs hundreds).  So, perhaps a church meeting needs more than one person to share the Light. Perhaps a church service needs various men and women to share God’s Light as they show and tell what God has done.

At The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville we are listening to “that other voice” (the Holy Spirit) — not to the cool clamor of confused contemporary culture!
“The Christian life consists . . . in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in.” –C.S. Lewis

People who know the living, resurrected Jesus have an amazing story to tell. Perhaps churches should let them tell it — let them testify!  “They triumphed over him (the d/evil) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”

Seeing the living, resurrected Jesus Christ working in and through ordinary people drives home the reality of His presence in our 21st Century world. So where can you find everyday people freely expressing their heart-felt love for Jesus? You see it every Sunday morning at The Salvation Army Berry Street where ordinary people show and tell what God has done — 10:45, 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207.

A Quiz For U . . .
How many people does the Bible say should be allowed to speak in a church service? (See 1 Corinthians 14:26).
A) 3 — (the preacher, the worship leader, and sometimes a guest speaker);
B) 2 — (the preacher and the worship leader);
C) 1 — (the preacher);
D) everyone.

“You’re a victim of disorganized thinking.” –The Wizard of Oz

Watching The Wizard of Oz in IMAX 3D in 2013, the wizard’s words to the Scarecrow seemed prophetic from this 1939 movie:  “You’re a victim of disorganized thinking.”

Our contemporary culture “is a victim of disorganized thinking.”  “Intellectual freedom” has been pushed to the point of unraveling our philosophical foundations.  Now our society doesn’t have faith to stand on.

* Casting down our conscience has corrupted our contemplation.  We are often confused because we ignore our inner moral guide.

* Muting morality has muddled our mind.   We are mentally mixed us up when it comes to historic moral standards.

* Following feeling has scrambled our focus.   We have lost the realization that facts (such as physiology) are more secure than feelings — that truth is more reliable than desires.

* Denying design has deluded and distracted our deliberation.  We have rejected much of the common sense declarations of nature such as the reality and glory of God.

* Harboring hedonism in our hearts has hindered our objectivity.  We have been seduced into valuing pleasure over principle, consumption over commitment, self-satisfaction over service, entertainment more than ethics.

* Non-stop negativity has numbed our neurons entangling us in the trap of tormenting thoughts.  We have ignored the wisdom (prudently organized thought) of Paul of Tarsus:  “Whatsoever things are true . . . honest . . . just . . . pure . . . lovely . . . of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.”  (Philippians 4:8).

3 ducks, 2 buzzards & some God thoughts

3 ducks & 2 buzzards . . .
–Earlier this morning I was on a walk in the woods and felt a prompting to go down a short, narrow path to a creek. However, I didn’t want to do that, so I kept walking, but the prompting wouldn’t go away. So after about 10 steps I reluctantly turned back and went down the path.
–The first thing I noticed was that the creek bed was a series of huge flat rocks. Then I saw 3 ducks wading downstream in single file in less than an inch of water — it barely covered their feet. I watched them waddle for a while and in about a minute they walked off the rock into a pool of water and began to swim.
–Then these words came to my mind: You and the people at Berry Street and many, many others have been wading in very shallow water of My Spirit, but keep following Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and soon you will swim in My Presence.
–I got back on the main trail and continued walking. In a little while, I saw two buzzards and even though I walked within three feet of them, they didn’t move. They were feasting on a small, smelly carcass.
–As I pondered the sight, a question came to my mind: Do you want to follow the buzzards or the ducks?
–(I wonder what the Duck Dynasty folks would say about my walk?)

God ideas or God demonstrations?

Participatory church presents God as a present reality as ordinary people are filled with wisdom, love, power, eloquence, faith, demonstrations of the Spirit, and the glory of God!  It moves beyond God ideas to God demonstrations.

When hot coals are pulled together and connect with one another, flames break out!
When hot hearts have the freedom in a church service to share with one another the fire that they feel, spiritual flames break out!

It is such a blessing to see God release Holy Spirit sparks spreading from person to person, creating an atmosphere of awe and spiritual contagion. There’s nothing like it!

God cares enough to send the very best — spontaneous expressions of the Holy Spirit through everyday men and women.

When people gather around the living, resurrected Jesus Christ and ask Him to actively lead and direct their time together, absolutely incredible things begin to happen. You should try it sometime.  Jesus actually takes the wheel!

My favorite thing to see in a church service:  The power and presence of God breaking out through various people as they show and tell what God has done!

Open sharing, participatory church keeps people “interested, involved, and committed.” —  “Almost all congregations are operating below their potential because they aren’t finding ways to invigorate and keep their own membership interested, involved and committed.” –Scott Thumma, co-author of the book: “The Other 80 Percent: Turning Your Church’s Spectators Into Active Participants.”

“There is something evil in our society . . .” –a Washington DC doctor.

“There is something evil in our society . . . ” –a Washington DC doctor after a mass shooting in her city in 2013..
Perhaps it is time to admit that something is terribly wrong with contemporary Western society that continually produces motiveless mass murders. This is an evil, as far as I can tell, unique to the Western society of the past several decades. I am an avid history reader and past societies have produced much evil; including mass killings, but as far as I can tell the killers have had a motive — robbery and looting for self-enrichment, sexual serial killers, racist hatred, making political points, etc.
But now our Western society has produced many people who kill groups of people that they don’t even know and that they don’t hate, just for the sake of killing them. Perhaps it is time to look at what we are doing as a society to determine how we are producing such motiveless evil actions.”
Dr. Janis Orlowski, with MedStar Washington Hospital said: “There’s something evil in our society that we as Americans have to work to try and eradicate, I have to say, I may see this everyday, I may be the chief medical officer of a very large trauma center, but there’s something wrong when we have these multiple shootings, these multiple injuries. There’s something wrong. The only thing that I can say is we have to work together to get rid of it.”
There is indeed terrible evil loose in our society and like Dr. Orlowski said, we need to get rid of it!  I think the first step would be for serious Christ-followers to begin to intentionally and actively obey 2 Chronicles 7:14:  “If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Here are several contributing factors to this horrid evil in our land:
*  Continually watching violence for pleasure.  We need to begin to put 2 and 2 together and figure out that watching people kill people for our entertainment in movies, TV shows, and video games, fills our psyche and the psyche of hundreds of millions of people with a violent brainwashing and a terrible disregard for and insensitivity toward human life.
*  Removing the commandment “Thou shall not kill,” from public life.
*  Rejection of the spiritual dimension of human beings.  If there is no God, then people are nothing but animated matter and of no more value than a insect.
*  Authorizing and approving of the continued killing of millions and millions of the most innocent humans on the planet, prenatal children.   (If an innocent human life is worthless in the womb, why are we flawed and guilty human beings of any value after we are born?)
*  Glorifying militarism and patriotic violence.
