What would happen if Chirst was allowed to control a church meeting?

What do you think would happen if we allowed Christ to enter a 21st Century church meeting, not as a sermon topic, or as a praise and worship theme, or as a distant religious figurehead; but as a living and present reality ready to actively take over and control the meeting?

That’s what we seek to do every Sunday morning at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee.  And this is what happens:

A sense of awe moves among us.  People share from their heart.  Some confess.  People pray deeply-moving prayers for one another.  Some people are moved to tears.  Others share powerful insights into Scriptures.  Gifts of the Spirit come forth.  Miracles happen.  Rejoicing breaks out.  Someone starts a song.  And it all flows as if orchestrated by an unseen presence — because it is controlled not by human planning, programming, and agendas, but by the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Everyone should have an experience like this!  It’s indescribable.  You just have to be there.  Sundays at 10:45 am., 225 Berry St., 37207.

Don’t Abort The Christ Child . . .

Don’t abort the Christ Child! Let Him live in your heart this holiday season.

Think how different things would be this time of year if Mary had not made the pro-life choice.

Had Mary killed the Christ Child in her womb, there would be no reason for the season and Christmas would be just an empty winter holiday with no Birth to celebrate and no One to set you free from your self-destructive thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.

Jesus said:  “What you do to the least of these . . . you do unto Me.”

Holidays: Preference, Orientation, & Freedom!

What is your holiday preference?  My holiday orientation is Christmas — celebrating the birth of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

Christmas is Freedom Day — time for mental, emotional, and spiritual captives to be set free from their self-destructive thoughts, attitudes, and actions!

“She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

“God asks us to liberate ourselves from self-absorption, from our narcissism.  It requires great courage to be liberated from the bondage of this world.”  –Maximos of Cyprus

Can You Handle These Quotes About Church?

“When we do come together as His assembly, let it be that He may work as He will, and by whom He will.” –William Kelly

“The Holy Spirit is the One Who should be allowed to lead the people of God in prayer, praise and worship. He should have liberty to speak through servants of His own choosing according to the spiritual needs of God’s people. In 1 Cor. 14:26, we have a picture of a meeting of the early church in which there was this freedom of the Spirit. When the Spirit is thus free to lead, there will be spontaneity in teaching, preaching, worship and intercession.” –William MacDonald

“Whether we wish to admit it or not, most church meetings are centered on one man known as ‘the Pastor.’ He alone preaches and teaches from the pulpit. So many congregations are centered upon this one man that when the members are asked about what church they attend, they usually reply, ‘I go to pastor So-and-So’s church.’ But should one man so dominate a church service? Does the New Testament support our one-man orientation? Is our practice of focusing on one man and his gifts a denial of the priesthood right of the believer? The entire tenor of the New Testament is upon the functioning of all of God’s people, not merely one person. Thus we find a ‘one another’ theology which emerges from its pages.” –Darryl M. Erkel

“Christ should be the gathering Center of His people (Matthew 18:20). We should be drawn by His presence, not by a man. There are potential dangers when all or most of the teaching in a local church is done by one man. People tend to accept his word as authoritative. If they are not studying the Scriptures for themselves, they are not in a good position to discern error.” –William MacDonald

“The process of group discovery of the Bible, group processing, and group accountability to obey God takes more time than teaching and preaching, but it yields remarkable transformation of whole families and communities with it is coupled with obedience.” –Jerry Trousdale

“The majority of church meetings are still structured in the old-school format of a paid professional speaking at rows of passive spectators. Only the ‘expert’ is entitled to speak in this model of ministry. Our universities, schools and businesses used to be like this too – until recently. In the 21st century, this approach doesn’t make sense anymore. Theologically, it never did make sense. It’s a very Old Testament approach. How can God’s people take part in actively loving one another if they are positioned to sit silently and passively whenever they gather?” –Kathleen & Kevin-Neil Ward

“When we place people in rows and preach from a pulpit, we accidentally communicate these hidden messages;
* You are consumers, not participants.
* You are an audience, not a community.
* You learn best by passively listening, not actively engaging.
* You are here to take, not to give.
* The pastor is the performer; you are the audience.
* We encourage superficial socializing, not deep connection and honest sharing.
* The pastor’s knowledge and training outweigh your opinions and life experience.
* You are not qualified to direct your own learning, or to teach others.
* The best way for you to teach others about God is to lecture at them and perform for them.” –Kathleen & Kevin-Neil Ward

Church, Jesus, and the Father’s business

“I must be about my Father’s business.” –Jesusfather's

We’ve all been told to “Mind your own business,” but whose business should a church (or ministry) mind?  If a church (or ministry) is really dedicated to God, shouldn’t it operate according to His plan, His will, and His business rather than according to a mere person’s (or group’s) agenda?

When a church meets and Jesus is present in our midst, perhaps we should allow Him to personally lead and direct the meeting according to His Father’s business, rather than holding to and enforcing our own agendas and programs.

But how?  It is very easy.  In 1 Corinthians 14:26, the Bible shows us how to let God’s agenda come forth.  It says that when we meet together, everyone has something to share.  That takes the agenda out of the control of a pastor, priest, or preacher and puts it in Jesus’ hands.  Then, the everyday people present are free to share and to do whatever the Father tells them to.  The church becomes His business, rather than a man’s.

This amazing Bible command actually works.  The only problem is that it is almost never tried.  However, if you would like to see 1 Corinthians 14:26 in action,  come visit The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday mornings at 10:45 — 225 Berry St., 37207.

“God talks” or “God talks”? (“Talks” as a noun or as a verb?)

What if Jesus intended church to be a community of loving believers, instead of a series of weekly lectures?  What if instead of listening to a man’s sermonic God talks, church was originally designed by Jesus for you to listen while the living God talks to you personally?

When the word talks is a noun, God talks are sermons.  However,  when the word talks is a verb, God talks means that He is speaking to you.  Are you listening?

When a church service is built around listening to a man talk about God, people learn theological information.  However, when a church meeting is built around listening to God talk, people are supernaturally transformed.  Hearing God’s voice is life changing!

At The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee, our goal is to hear God talk to us.  So we have set aside traditional sermons.  Instead of preaching, after praise and worship, we encourage people to listen to God and then to openly share what He tells them.  The results are absolutely incredible.  Come and see for yourself:  Sunday mornings at 10:45, 225 Berry Street, 37207.

3 Thought-provoking questions . . .

What if Jesus intended church to be a community of loving believers, instead of a series of weekly lectures?

What if leadership is more effective by example rather than by title or office or position? Perhaps that is what God intended in the church. (See Matthew 20:25-26.)

If a nation’s human rights record was determined by how it treats its unborn children, how would your nation do?

Is Christmas Without Chirst, Treason To The Season?

Treason to the season?
Since Christmas is all about Christ and His birth (and is even named after Him); and since Christ is the very reason for the season, doesn’t that mean that leaving Christ out of Christmas is treason to this holy season?
