Think Outside The Sermon — Sermon-Free Church Quotations

cropped-c-s-lewis-quote-perfect-church.png

“One filled with joy preaches without preaching.”  –Mother Teresa

“Had Saul (who became Apostle Paul) met only a preacher and heard only a sermon, he might never have been heard of again. But Saul met Christ and heard His Voice.”  –Leonard Ravenhill

“I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day.  I’d rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.”  –Edgar A. Guest

“Our attendance at church ought to be a direct encounter with God, and there is no place for a lecture in the middle of it.”  –Daphne D.C. Pochin Mould

“They are as inefficient as the sleepy dose of an ordinary sermon.”  –Adam Weishaupt

“I wish Christianity was more productive of good works, not sermon-hearing.”  –Benjamin Franklin

“A near hit of lightning can create a lot more Christian thinking than a long-winded sermon.”  –Duane Dewel

“Sermons remain one of the last forms of public discourse where it is culturally forbidden to talk back.”  –Harvey Cox

“One act of obedience is better than 100 sermons.”  Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“I can not understand why ministers presume to deliver sermons every week at appointed hours, because it is impossible for inspirations to come with clock-like regularity.”  –Sinclair Lewis

“If the truth were known, many sermons are prepared and preached with more regard for the sermon than for the souls of the hearers.”  –George F. Pentecost

“The sermon did once have a necessary and essential role. Before printing was invented, books were scarce and expensive, written by hand, one at a time. The spoken word was the great means of communicating ideas . . . But in highly developed countries, the situation is entirely changed. For us, the sermon is the most inefficient communications tool you could think of . . . So I would do away with the Sunday sermon. I would replace it with much greater encouragement to the ordinary Christian to study his faith outside church.” –Daphne D.C. Pochin Mould

Soaked And Stoked (for Jesus)

What are the two most amazing, exciting, and fulfilling activities (that are mostly ignored by most people)?  A) Interacting with the Holy Spirit and B) Reading the Bible with an open heart! They are incredible! I love those two activities!

So get soaked and stoked for God!

A culture that consists of spastic, self-indulgent, lust-driven minds, will continually careen out of control.  However, when a culture allows the living, resurrected Jesus Christ to captivate, clean, and cultivate their minds and hearts; peace, joy, and love begin to lead the way.

Perhaps its time for a church take-over. In the Western world, we need a take-over of the church: Not by the government or by the culture (even though the culture has pretty much saturated the church with its philosophies and self-focused attitudes).

No. We need a take-over of the church by the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

God’s Spiritual Sprinkler Systems

According to the New Testament, God wants church services to be spiritual sprinkler systems where the Holy Spirit freely flows from everyone present. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26.)  This is God’s powerful “prophetic activation” (a phrase made popular by Sandy Powell of Nashville, TN).

When a church service is allowed to be a spiritual-round-robin sprinkler system, moderated and directed by the living, resurrected Jesus Christ, the glory of God shows up!  “If an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, ‘God is really among you!'” –1 Corinthians 14:24-25.

So is the clergy/laity concept biblical?  “Are there two standards of service, one high and Christlike, and one much lower, made to meet the case of little, lean, cowardly souls? No! No! No!” —William Booth (co-founder of The Salvation Army)

At The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee, we believe that every Christ-follower is clergy and is called by God to be a minister/witness, regardless of how he/she makes a living. (This was taught by Martin Luther and other leaders of the Reformation and is called “the priesthood of the believer.”)  We also use a different worship leader each week so that no one person or group is exalted above the rest of us.

If you are in the Nashville area, check it out:  Sunday mornings at 10:45 — 225 Berry Street, 37207.

Perhaps A Pastor Should Oversee, Not Direct Church Services

–“Overseer” — that’s how the word for Christian leader is translated in some versions of the New Testament.  That translation fits Jesus’ command that leaders be “servants.”
–A great example of an overseer is a basketball or football official.  He/she does not take center stage, but stays in the background and watches (but doesn’t control) the action.  If there is a problem, he/she throws a flag or blows a whistle, stops the action, corrects the problem, and then turns the game back over to those participating in the game.  As a true servant, he/she gets out-of-the-way and allows those he serves to be in the spotlight.
–If pastor’s exercised oversight instead of control, the Holy Spirit would have the freedom to do whatever He wants to do in church!  And that would be life transforming!
–So where can you find such a church?  If you live in Nashville check out The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center, 225 Berry St., 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45.

Spiritual Starvation / Biblical Realities

The 21st Century is suffering from spiritual starvation.  We have cast the realities of biblical language from our vocabulary.  Repentance, obedience, sacrifice, iniquities, self-denial, sin, judgment, salvation, rebellion, eternal life, mercy — these (and other) words that describe real human conditions and behaviors have been exited from our lives.

The Bible describes the human condition.  Yet, we have chosen the denial of its truths.

Then we wonder why we struggle with misery constantly nipping at our hills.  And why the Bible’s concepts of love, joy, and inner peace seem like fantasy.

But is it really any wonder?  We’ve thrown down the nourishment supplied in the Bible.  Now we stagger in the state of spiritual starvation.

From Independence Day to Dependence Day

Most people around the world know that the 4th of July is American Independence Day — when we relish the thought of being free from reliance on others.  However, perhaps we need to get beyond July 4th and acknowledge July 5th as Dependence Day.

As individuals we need help.  We get into difficulty and we realize that ultimately, we cannot rely on ourselves.  We cannot count on our intelligence, knowledge, or education; we cannot rely on our talents, skills, or abilities; we cannot depend on our character or morality; we cannot trust our finances or money-making ability.  Frankly, we cannot rely on self-reliance; because we so often make choices that get us into trouble and difficulty.

The same is true of our nation.  Our economy is shaky; our politics is failing us; our debt is crushing; our wars seem to never end; violence, depression, and suicide are rampant; our government is an albatross; our families are fragmented and misconstrued; our moral values have collapsed around us.

Yesterday, I posted a comment similar to this on Facebook.  Then I went to McKay
Used Book Store in Nashville and got a book. As I began to read it I came across this quote by Martha Grace Reese:  “American culture has rarely held up surrender and yieldedness (dependence), the heart of a spiritual life, as heroic values.”

So maybe it is time to surrender and yield, and to declare our dependence — to make a Declaration of Dependence on the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.  Who better to depend on, surrender to, and yield to, than Him?  Just give me Jesus!  If the nation won’t do it, you can do it as an individual.

Publicly declare your dependence on Christ.  Then wage a War of Dependence to boldly fight against your pride, self-reliance, and selfish desires.  It is not an easy war.  It requires all the courage and heroism of the American War of Independence.

Self-interest and self-destructive thoughts and behaviors are causing you much more problems and pain than England caused the American Colonies.  Perhaps it is time to finally break away from self-focus and turn all your time, effort, and attention to fight for dependence on the living Christ.

The Salvation Army was established to fight for dependence on Jesus Christ.  The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center in Nashville, Tennessee carries on that heroic tradition.  Come fight with us on Sunday mornings at 10:45 at 225 Berry Street, 37207.

Type F Church or Type R Church?

Types Of Church Services (Type F Church & Type R Church)

Type F (Familiar) Church — The same man reports on his biblical studies each week, while the congregation listens in a formal setting.

Type R (Rare) Church — Various people share testimonies, words of encouragement, Scriptures, gifts of the Spirit, etc. each week as prompted by the Spirit.

Nashville, Tennessee has a Type R church.  It gathers on Sunday mornings at 10:45 at The Salvation Army, 225 Berry St., 37207.  Come and experience Type R church in action.

A Jigsaw Puzzle Has No Featured Piece!

If the same piece of a jigsaw puzzle is held up week after week, no one will get the picture. However, if all the pieces work together, as directed by a wise hand, an awesome picture comes into view!  “If an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, ‘God is really among you!‘” (1 Corinthians 14:24-25)

For me, #1 has always been a lonely number for a Sunday morning church service — to have only 1 person run the meeting and the same 1 person give a message, week after week, seems to leave out the rest of the numbers, all the people who sit quietly in church and watch and listen.

I became a Christ-follower in a campus fellowship where anybody could share, or pray, or read a Scripture, as they felt led by the Holy Spirit. When I graduated I tried to find a church like that, but for 32 years I never could. Then The Salvation Army asked my wife and I to start a “non-traditional” church in East Nashville. We accepted their invitation and set it up to be participatory, where it is not built on the lonely number 1, but where anybody present can show and tell what God has done.

Guess what? Church isn’t lonely any more!  Come see for yourself @ 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN, 37207 on Sundays at 10:45.

“Privileged priests tend to be a function of static, hierarchical religious institutions. Ministry shared by all and apportioned according to recognized gifts bestowed by the Spirit, tends to be a function of a dynamic community of faith which is ever on the move.” –Retired Salvation Army Commissioner, Phil Needham.
