Are We Good People Or Bad People?

Most people think that there are bad people in the world, but almost nobody thinks that they are a bad person.  However, people who are genuinely close to God, are the exceptions.  They seem to readily admit that they are bad people.

Paul of Tarsus called himself “the chief of sinners.”  He said:  “O wretched man that I am,” and “I know that within me, that is within myself, is no good thing.”

Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet said: “I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips.”

John Newton, who wrote the song Amazing Grace, said:  “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.”

The truth is, all human beings are bad people.  Isaiah wrote:  “All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned everyone one to his own way, and the Lord has laid on Him (Christ) the iniquity of us all.”

20th Century Russian author, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, put it this way: “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”

We all have evil in our heart and but for moral upbringing, our conscience, painful consequences, societal restrictions, the conviction of God in our heart, and law enforcement, any human being can express evil actions as well as another one.  History and the observation of human behavior, show us that unrestrained human desire always leads to evil.

As an example take the looting in Baghdad after the US invasion and New Orleans after Katrina.  When the rule of law and law enforcement are removed, the evil in human hearts comes out.

We humans are bad people.  That’s why Christianity makes so much sense.  It truly describes the human condition.  And it gives good news to bad people.  “The consequences that your wrongful thoughts and behaviors have earned you,  have been inflicted on Jesus Christ.  He has taken your punishment and now your guilt is paid for and removed.  You can now, as a bad person be forgiven and made whole and enter into a life-transforming relationship with the living, resurrected Jesus Christ that makes you free, not only form the punishment of your wrongdoing and wrongful thinking, but also have the supernatural power to overcome them.”

Wow!  Jesus put it this way:  “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

I recently spoke to a small group of homeless men and women today. I started by asking: How many of you are bad people? Only two people raised their hand: me and one guy. (I wonder how many hands would go up in an affluent group of people.)  Then I shared how the Bible teaches that “there is none righteous, no not one,” and that we are all bad — lawbreakers and rebels before the holy God; and that we desperately need Christ to forgive us and to set us free from our badness.

Tears began to run down one man’s cheeks and he cried the whole time I was talking. Afterwards he walked over to a corner, sat down, put his head in his hands, and wept uncontrollably.

I asked if I could pray with him and he nodded. Weeping, he apologized to God for his sin and asked Him to forgive him and Christ to come into his life. It was truly an amazing thing to see!

Where there’s no guilt, there’s no grace.  When we make sin acceptable, we reject God’s salvation.  “You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.”

Release or Re-Leash?

Release of the Spirit — or — Re-leash of the Spirit?

Have you ever noticed that whenever there is a release of the Holy Spirit, the human tendency is to re-leash Him and get church back under human control and programming?

But why does the Holy Spirit need a leash?  Isn’t He God?  Can’t we trust the Holy Spirit to lead a church service, all by Himself, without human programming?

Sure we can!  All we have to do is to step out of the boat of tradition, form, power, and prestige; and let the Spirit take the lead.  When we release our control of a church meeting, it brings forth a release of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

So, is church about people being passive spectators or active participators? Here’s what the Bible says:

When you come together, EACH OF YOU has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. (1 Corinthians 14:26, NIV)

This is not just a theological idea.  It is very practical.  At The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee, we experience this Scripture every Sunday morning at 10:45.  If you are near by, come and see for yourself — 225 Berry St., 37207.

Most Everybody Draws A Line Between Thier Desires & Moral Principles

Almost everybody draws a line somewhere between their desires, cravings, and feelings; and moral principles.  Almost everybody has at times a desire they want to fulfill, but they intentionally restrain themselves because they believe that fulfilling that desire is morally wrong.  We just draw the line in different places.

So how can people who draw a moral line at intentionally harming a child after it has been born, call those who draw the moral line at intentionally harming a child in the womb, judgmental?  Both are holding to moral standards about how to treat human life.

And how can people who draw the moral line for sexual expression at orgies (or rape) call those who draw the moral line at sex outside of biblical marriage, intolerant?  Both are denying sexual desire because of morality.

And how can those who make their own decisions about where they personally want to draw moral lines, condemn those who accept the moral lines drawn by the Bible and acknowledged almost universally by moral leaders of various cultures through out history?

Jesus Living On The Inside

How can anyone describe
Jesus living inside you?
It’s like having a shower head
Inside your heart,
Continually spraying
Soothing, comforting,
Energizing, thrilling, and refreshing
Streams of joy, love, peace, faith, and hope
All through your emotions, your mind, and your soul.
Jesus put it this way: “Whoever believes in Me,
As the Scripture has said, rivers of living water
Will flow from within them.”

Jesus streaming inside of me
Won’t freely let me do my thing,
Or follow and exalt my own desires,
Or approve and applaud those who do,
Without shutting down His spiritual flow.
He rouses my conscience
And makes me deeply feel
My great need to obey Him,
No matter what my cravings say,
Or what people think about me,
Or how society seduces me
To abandon His commandments
And flaunt rebellious independence.
I must be true to Christ
And cannot deny His word
To please any person or group.

A Good God? A Good Government?

People sometimes ask: “How can a good God judge and punish people?

That’s like asking: “How can a good country have law enforcement, judges, and prisons?”

George Scott Railton, an early leader of The Salvation Army, wrote:  “A soul not subject to God is the plaything of the devil; utterly without freedom, it can neither rise to that which is good, nor prevent itself from falling into that which is evil . . .”

The Marathon Of A Lifetime!

The St. Jude Country Music Marathon (formerly the Music City Marathon) takes place tomorrow in Nashville, Tennessee.  Many will put themselves to the test as they run, yet they find the testing to be thrilling.  They love the challenge.

“The music of a marathon is a powerful strain, one of those tunes of glory. It asks us to forsake pleasures, to discipline the body, to find courage, to renew faith and to become one’s own person, utterly and completely.”  –George Sheehan

However the ultimate marathons are not the ones run in running shoes.  The marathon of a lifetime is the lifetime pursuit of God.  Filled with tests, challenges, and heartbreak hills, life can call forth all the passion, commitment, and sacrifice that a person has.  Many decide to fall back, to walk, to rest, to drop out of the marathon of life.

However, Paul of Tarsus, in the New Testament, gives a better way to deal with life’s marathon.  He asks:  “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

If anything in this life is worthy of all out commitment, it’s not a foot race — it’s following and obeying the living resurrected Jesus Christ in your daily life.  That’s the race worth running.  Don’t piddle around, don’t ignore, don’t deny — instead, run this race.

There’s a place in Nashville where runners are gathering to train in a spiritual support group, for the marathon of a lifetime — the all out pursuit of God — meeting every Sunday morning at 10:45 at 225 Berry Street, Nashville, 37207.   Rather than being passive spectators listening to a lecture, these spiritual runners are training each other as they show and tell what God has done.  Check it out — The Salvation Army Berry Street.

Testimony Church

Show & Tell Church  (A song/poem about testimony church.)

We each one speak about
What we’ve seen and heard
Our experience
With the living Word,
Showing and telling
God’s great wonders
Our lives are changed
As the Spirit thunders!

“I’m with you now
Not just in the past
My Presence is real
It’s the thing that lasts.
Open your eyes,
See Me in each other
In the testimony of a
Sister or brother.”

So we each speak up
And the enemy defy,
We overcome
As we testify!
We overcome
As we testify!

I’ve been healed
By the blood of the Lamb,
Delivered by
The great I AM!

Tell it church,
Tell it when you’re meeting,
We’re not here
To take up seating!
Open your mouth
And God will fill it;
God works in us
And people need to hear it.
