A Red Flag On Nashville Streets

My wife and I (and sometimes others) have felt called to carry a red, yellow, and blue flag on the streets of Nashville for the past 7 years.  It is the official flag of The Salvation Army:  The red represents the blood of Jesus; the yellow stands for the fire of the Holy Spirit; and the blue reminds us that we are called to follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ in our daily lives.

We recently carried the flag a couple of miles up Dickerson Road to Jodi and Loretta’s newly purchased mobile home. (They are a regular part of The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center and were homeless 4 years ago.) We prayed and dedicated their new home to God.
On our way Ernie prayed for divine encounters. Almost immediately a guy in a red pickup truck stopped on the road, rolled his window down, and said: “I grew up in The Salvation Army in New York!” We got to invite him to Berry Street and he said he would come. We had never seen him before, but before he drove away he said: “Thanks for what you are doing! I love you guys!”
Then Rufus yelled at us and he and Scott walked across busy Dickerson Road. Rufus worked as a bell ringer for us one Christmas season. Rufus told us that Scott was homeless and wanted to change his life. We got to encourage both of them, pray with them, and give Scott some leads for recovery and housing. He, also, said he would come visit Berry Street.
Several people honked and waved at us along the way. And a few people asked us about the flag.  It was a real adventure!

Men Gone Wild (Or Are They Just Free In The Spirit?)

Recently six men gathered in Nashville, Tennessee and were overcome by  spontaneous praise, worship, celebration, dancing, and prayer; for more than two hours.  Had these men gone wild?  Or were they just free in the Spirit?

They were experiencing a rare form of Christianity — New Testament Book of Acts style Christianity.  (Read through Acts of the Apostles and learn more about it.)

This has now become a weekly event — every Tuesday night at 6:00 at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St, 37207.  Come and experience this amazing men’s prayer meeting.

Church — Massaging the Mind Or Harvesting The Heart?

Jesus taught that spiritual inspiration (revelation) is the harvest of the heart.  He said:  “Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.”  (John 7:38).

The purpose of church (of believers gathering together) is to release the inner flow so that the Holy Spirit can move through those present and manifest the power and presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ through the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit.

Religious information moves through the brain.  However, church is much deeper and more profound that mental messages and concepts.  Church ignites the human heart with the fire of God, it doesn’t just massage the mind.

If a religious meeting doesn’t get beyond the brain, if it leaves the heart untouched, unchanged, and unmoved by the living God, it may be a lecture on religion, but it really church?

21st Century Christianity does not need more programs, more sermons, more teaching, more seekers, more religion, more meetings — it needs more people whose hearts are on fire with passionate and unquenchable love for the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

Reader’s Digest Acknowledges Participatory Style Of First Century Christian Worship

Contemporary society is moving toward more participation in management and meetings.  This can be seen in business management styles, the Oprah Show, and even Facebook.  However, the contemporary church seems stuck on sermons — non-participatory, one-person, lectures.

However, early Christian worship was very interactive.  It was based on open sharing and participation by everyone present, rather than on a professional presentation.

This is confirmed in these two quotations from the Reader’s Digest book, After Jesus–The Triumph of Christianity:

“In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul outlined the early Christian service: ‘When you come together, each one of you has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.’ From Paul’s description it is clear that these early gatherings were dynamic and exciting, and encouraged every worshiper to participate.”

“On a Sunday in Corinth a group of slaves and freedmen, paupers and aristocrats fill a home.  A tall, middle-aged man, his weathered face framed by a fringe of black beard, stands and begins speaking in tongues.  Others recite prayers, lead hymns, or give instruction . . . scenes like the above occurred throughout the Roman Empire during the latter part of the first century.”

This biblical style of church is not just a theory.  It not only works, it unleashes the real presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

Come and see for yourself at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville.  Experience participatory church where everyday people show and tell what God has done — Sundays @ 10:45 am., 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.

Church shouldn’t bore those who come near it; church should soar in the Spirit!

Church should soar in the Spirit; not bore those who come near it!

Church shouldn’t be the same thing over and over (like the movie Groundhog Day). Church should be alive, vibrant, and thrilling!

(Paul of Tarsus said: “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away.”)

Another Reason To Wear Red

It’s National Wear Red Day in the USA.  National Wear Read Day was begun by the American Heart Association for a great cause — to help focus people’s attention on the problem of heart disease in women.

However, there is another reason to wear red besides physical heart problems — spiritual heart (soul) issues.  We humans all need our broken heart (our rebellious heart) healed.  Red symbolizes God’s way to get our heart healed — through trusting in the blood of Jesus Christ.

So here’s another way to wear red — carrying or wearing The Salvation Army Flag:

The red represents the blood of Jesus.  The yellow stands for the fire of the Holy Spirit and the blue for a lifestyle of following and obeying the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Here’s another example:  images
