The Way To Grow Is To Go

People grow when they go into positive action.  If they sit still too long, they atrophy.

The way to grow spiritually is to go with God’s flow — to hear and do what the Spirit of God says to you.  Be courageous.  Obey the still, small voice of God speaking intuitively in your conscience.

Take the time to listen to God and do what He says.  The results will be amazing — supernatural.  You will be in awe at the outcome.

One of the main purposes of church is discipleship — helping people grow strong in the Lord.  For that to happen, people must have the opportunity to respond to God when the church gathers.

If we make them sit and watch a program presented according to human agendas, they will be passive and bored.  If we lovingly challenge them to listen to the Spirit and do what He says, and then give them the freedom to obey whatever God tells them to do in church meetings, spiritual life breaks out.

This isn’t just a theory.  It’s happening in Nashville at 225 Berry Street, every Sunday morning at 10:45 am. and Thursday night at 6:30.  Come and see God doing mighty things through ordinary people.  Before you know it, God will work through you in ways you never thought possible.

What’s Needed In Contemporary Ch__ch? u r (You Are Needed To Be An Active Participant Rather Than A Spectator!))

If you compare contemporary church meetings with how they did church in the New Testament, you will notice that something seems to be missing nowadays.  What’s the difference between the early church and the modern-day church?

Paul compares the New Testament church to a human body, having many members (body parts) with many different, but very necessary and important, functions.  However, if you attend a 21st Century church, you will notice that there are only two or three minor roles (reading Scripture, making announcements, etc.) and one major role (directing the meeting and speaking).  The rest of the members are required to mainly sit and watch the proceedings.

The New Testament model, however, (see 1 Corinthians 14:26) is more like a support group rather than a program.  Members are not only allowed, but depended on, to participate by openly sharing Scriptures, testimonies, prayers, words of encouragement, and whatever else the Holy Spirit prompts them to.

When people watch something they receive entertainment and/or information.  However, when people actively participate in something they receive experience, excitement, confidence, skill, personal and spiritual growth, and maturity.

When numerous people participate in a meeting an amazing thing happens — God’s Presence and direction is demonstrated as the various contributions from various people blend together into a beautiful symphony of divine origin.  The realm of humanly organized and programmed church meetings is transcended and God, Himself, takes over.  Awe comes rushing into the room.

There are few, if any, inactive members in a healthy human body.  Almost every human body part has an active role to play.  If body parts stop functioning in their roles, the body becomes sick and eventually dies.  So with the church.

Church is not intended to be a memorial to Christ.  It is not supposed to be a Christian monument in memory of past miracles.  God designed church to be a living demonstration of His present day power and glory.

Maybe it is time for the church to rechurch — to recharge — to revive the New Testament church order of open participation and sharing.   If you would like to see a participatory church meeting in person visit:  The Salvation Army Berry Street — 225 Berry Street — Nashville — 37207 — Sun. @ 10:45 am. &/or Thurs. @ 6:30 pm.

Hey Church, We Are Family . . . (Do We Act Like It?)

Perhaps the church can learn from family . . .

The Bible teaches that church is family — a body of believers bound together in spiritual kinship.  Church is hearts connected in love for Christ and for one another.   The Biblical concept of church creates an atmosphere of community — mutual concern, caring, and affection.

When a family gathers, it is seldom formal.  Except for weddings and/or funerals, families usually meet in unprogrammed ways.  Family members are free to spontaneously flow in conversation and interaction with one another.

Much teaching happens in families, but little of it is in the form of lecture.  (Most parents have discovered that lecture is not very effective.)  Instead, parents teach more like Jesus did, by modeling thinking, speaking, and behaving.  All their interaction with their children is teaching and it comes out of real life happenings rather than from systematic lesson plans.

Can a church meeting function like an informal family gathering.  Yes indeed.  Read Acts and see family at work.

Would you like to experience a spontaneous, family-like church in action?  Drop by The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., N’ville, 37207 on Thurs. nights @ 6:30 and/or Sun. mornings @ 10:45.

What Involves Various People Speaking But Only 1 Person Talking?

What involves several people speaking but only one Person talking?  A Spirit-led, participatory church meeting.

It is truly amazing.  Various people spontaneously (as led by the Spirit) share words of encouragement, insights, testimonies, Scriptures, prayer requests, spiritual gifts, prayers, and even songs.  The remarkable thing is that the many people speak with one voice — the Voice of the Holy Spirit, who acts as an invisible conductor guiding the meeting according to His will.

Experience many people speaking and one Person talking for yourself at:  The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center, 225 Berry Street, Nashville, Tennessee, 37207 on Thursday nights at 6:30 and Sunday mornings at 10:45.

One Voice speaking through many people is nothing new.  God has been leading this type of worship gathering since the early church.  (See I Corinthians 14:26).  Many Christian groups through out church history have worshiped this way including the First Century church, the early Quakers, and the early Methodists in their class meetings.

Hereeeeeeee’s Jesus!

Would you like to see God’s glory in your life and in your church?  The key is not a conference or a curriculum, not a program or a performance, not marketing or methods, not a better strategy or harder work.  The key is much closer to you than any of that.  The key is Christ alive in you (and with you) — the hope of glory.  Stir up the gift of Christ inside of you!  Stir the cold coals into flame and let Christ burn and blaze brilliantly in your midst.

Ed McMahon used to introduce Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show by saying the words:  “And now, hereeeeee’s Johnny!”  Perhaps, since Jesus is alive and present when we gather in His name, we should introduce church services by saying:  “And now, hereeeeeeeeee’s Jesus!” and then letting Jesus, Himself, direct the meeting.

And now, hereeeeeeee’s Jesus! Right here with me and right there with you! (That’s what the Bible says.) So if Christ is really with us, why don’t we include Him in an active role in our church services and programs? If Christ is really alive and present when we gather in His name, then we should be in for quite the remarkable demonstration of His power and love, every Sunday morning — unless, of course, we make Him step aside before He is finished with His part of the program. Experience Jesus running a church service on Sunday mornings @ 10:45 and Thursday nights @ 6:30 at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center in Nashville, TN — 225 Berry St., 37207.

A Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Words

When I was a boy my dad had a book called:  Eloquence in Public Speaking: How To Set Your Words On Fire by Kenneth McFarland.  It was about how to put sparks in human hearts and it helped to create in me the desire to be a great speaker.

When I finished seminary I became a pastor.  After church on Sunday people would say to me:  “Good message,” or “Nice sermon.”  However when Jesus spoke, people said:  “Didn’t His words burn in our hearts.”  Perhaps what we need in the church nowadays is “a hunka hunka burnin'” words.

A talk prepared by a mind speaks to mind.  However a message prepared in a heart touches human hearts and a message prepared in a life changes people’s lives.  Instructing and informing words are fine, but information alone seldom inspires people to live better lives.  (Most of us know far more information than we apply.) However, burning and transforming words go down deep and change lives.

The story of the early followers of Christ, the Book of Acts, is full of burning words.  Peter spoke and 3,000 people turned to the Lord and began to live transformed lives.  Everywhere Paul went and spoke his burning words sparked either a revival or a riot.  Even their enemies said that the early believers “turned the world upside down.”  Before they became known as Christians, they were called “witnesses.”

A witness gives testimony to what she has seen and heard.  The early followers of Christ’s Way passionately showed and told what God had done for them, to them, and with them.  And their words and lifestyle were contagious, starting spiritual fires everywhere they went.

Testimony is powerful.  If you talk, in detail, about theological concepts, people will probably snooze.  However, when you enthusiastically and sincerely show and tell what God has done for you personally, people will be amazed and impacted.

Try it.  Sincerely tell someone something that God has done that has greatly impacted your life.  If it moves you to tears, let them come.  Then watch their response.  Sometimes you can see your words burning in their hearts.

John wrote in the Book of Revelation:  “They (the believers) over came him (the devil) by the blood of the Lamb, by the words of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto death.”  Testimony is mentioned between the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and the willingness of believers to die for Christ.  Now that’s unbelievably powerful!

Giving testimony can be intimidating.  However, church should be a safe place where you can show and tell what God has done while your fellow Christians support and encourage you.  As you regularly tell fellow believers in church what God is doing in your life, you will eventually begin to have the courage tell people in the work place, in stores, at school, and in your neighborhood about what you have seen God do and heard Him say to you.  And as you hear other people talk about Christ in church you will catch their fire and passion.

Testimony really works to overcome your spiritual enemy.  Come and see for yourself at the testimony church — The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center — where people show and tell what God has done:  Sunday mornings @ 10:45 & Thursday nights @ 6:30; 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207.

Come and hear a hunka hunka burning words!

WIJD? What Is Jesus Doing?

WWJD?  What would Jesus do is a good question.  But here’s a better one:  WIJD?  What is Jesus doing in your life today?

. . . talking to you?

. . . guiding you?

. . . changing you?

. . . healing you?

. . . forgiving you?

. . . listening to you?

. . . convicting you of sin?

. . . feeding you spiritually?

. . . calling you to follow and obey Him?

. . . setting you free to live a pure and holy life?

. . . driving darkness out of your life?

. . . shinning in your heart?

. . . providing for you?

. . . keeping you alive?

. . . working miracles?

. . . protecting you?

. . . watching you?

. . . weeping over you?

I’m overwhelmed when I think about what Jesus is doing in my life.  It makes me want to pray the ancient Jesus Prayer prayed by Orthodox monks (and others) through out the centuries:  “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Is There A Better Way To Study?

In the Western world we study to effect our intellect more than our heart.  Our minds swell while our hearts are shrink-wrapped in an endless roll of facts and figures.  Is there a better way to study?  Yes.

Paul of Tarsus wrote:  “Study to show yourself approved unto God.”  This is not academic or intellectual study.  It is not study to learn a curriculum but to put together pieces of insight in a way that releases inner rivers of spiritual life.  It is not striving to fill the mind with information but seeking to have a better relationship with God.

We should study for inward change — in order to be transformed.  We should study to change our perspective, our opinions, our habits, our emotions; to overcome our issues; to improve our relationships with others and our relationship with God; to be inspired; to increase our love, our joy, our peace, our patience, our kindness.

We should study the lives and writings of people who have learned to effectively manage their thoughts, their feelings, and their behaviors in ways that release the love, joy, and peace of spiritual life, so that we can learn to do likewise.  Many of these writings are in the Bible.  The object of this study is a burning heart more than a puffed up mind.

The Holy Spirit wants to message you.  Are you logged-in — willing to receive His downloads?  Have you learned to be open to receive a stirring, a flash of wisdom, an inspiration, a hunch, a prompting, a revelation, an aha, an insight; 24/7?  Or do you find that you haven’t learned how to receive wireless Holy Spirit service in your heart?
