Didn’t You Know You’ve Got to Cry Sometime?

Diana Ross sings a song that asks this question:  “Didn’t you know you have to cry sometime?”  However, a popular myth in our day says: “Strong people don’t cry,” or “Real men don’t cry.”  Why, then, do they have tear ducts?

The truth is: crying is one of the most ignored human resources. Tears are an outlet for pain, a relief for grief. Genuine crying can comfort the calamity of a broken heart.

Tears are a sign that someone has moved beyond mere intellectual understanding to deeply felt emotion — beyond analysis to caring. Tears often reveal heart-felt compassion and concern.

Tears communicate far more effectively than words. When we “weep with those who weep,” we experience one of the most profund human connections.

Tears are frequently indicative of humility and brokenness — an admission that life is far more significant than mere image and appearance. To shed genuine, heart-felt tears is to touch the inner reality of the human spirit.

Humans haven’t always believed the myth that says that tears are a sign of weakness. Take the ancient Hebrews for instance. They believed that real men, tough men, know how to cry. King David, a warrior and man’s man, said: “I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears.” And: “I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping.” He also said: “When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn.”

Jeremiah was known as “the weeping prophet.” A popular song from the Jewish Babylonian captivity said: “By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.”  When Nehemiah heard about the heard about the condition of his fellow Jews in Jerusalem, he said: “When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.”

Here’s a quotation from Paul of Tarsus: “For, as I have often told you before and now say again, even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.” And: “I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears.” He also said: “Be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.”

If you examine the Old and New Testaments, you will discover that the examples I quoted are far from exceptions. Most of the ancient Hebrews freely cried. They did so publicly and without embarrassment.

When we hold back our tears, we cut ourselves off from much of our humanity. Why not let your tears go, the next time they want to flow? Much in our society is dreadfully disturbing nowadays. Yet, for the most part, we remain cool, calm, and collected. Perhaps we could use some passionate weeping.

God’s Watergate — Rivers Of Living Water

God’s watergate has nothing to do with the scandal that brought down President Nixon.  God’s watergate is in the human heart and when opened allows the living water of the Holy Spirit to flow from deep inside a person.

Jesus said:  “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.”  There is a spiritual flow from deep within believers waiting to be released.  We need to open the watergate and let it flow.

Here are some quotations about God’s rivers:

“The Holy Spirit will unleash a river of life within you that will shoot up like a fountain and refill you.  All that has drained you of energy and hope will be submerged and will dissipate beneath its strong current.”  –Michelle McKinney Hammond

“See to it that you are filled with the Spirit, and Jesus will see to it that out of your life shall flow rivers of holy influence and power to bless the world.”  –Samuel Logan Brengle

“Jesus is rivers of living water.  He is like streams which flow through dry places to irrigate the land and enable it to be fruitful.  He does this in us by His Spirit.”  –Sarah Hornsby

One who walks in the Spirit is pouring out that which the Spirit pours in — His joy, His peace, His patience, His goodness, His faithfulness.”  –Esther Burroughs

“We need to receive the living water which Jesus Christ will give us and which alone can satisfy our souls.”  –Sadhu Sundar Singh

“Keep your relationship right with Jesus.  He is pouring out rivers of living water through you.  –Oswald Chambers

“The evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is the outflow.”  –Esther Burroughs

“Inner enlightenment wells up forcefully within the person.”  –Abraham Isaac Kook

“Revival is being absolutely filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit.”  –Roy Hession

“Jesus says; ‘Out of the desert of your life shall burst forth the abundance of My life, rivers of living water.  These rivers cannot be contained but must flow to the ocean of humanity feeding people around you with all the good things I have given you.”  –Sarah Hornsby

“The Holy Spirit can flow from you as living waters, as a river of life, that brings the life-giving touch of God to those around you.”  –Jim Feeny

“Strive to be a vessel for Jesus Christ through which living water flows.”  –Esther Burroughs

“Whatsoever relations believers held to the Spirit in the beginning, they have a right to claim today.”  –A.J. Gordon

“Let Your living water flow over my soul.  Let Your Holy Spirit come and take control.”  –John Watson

Is There Life On Earth?

Scientists wonder, “Does life exist on Mars?” But no one asks the question: “Does life exist on Earth?”

We accept the existence of life as an indisputable fact because we personally experience life both within us and all around us. However, no one can see or touch life.  True, we can see and touch living things, but life, itself, is invisible. We see the results of life — what life produces — but we don’t see life itself.

When a living creature dies, we know that life is gone, but we cannot find anything material missing from the creature. Therefore, whatever life is, it is non-material.

Some people may suggest that life is merely mechanical, a machine like functioning of a material, fleshly body. However, if the remains of a human being could be made to mechanically bend its legs and waddle along upright, no one would suggest that the person’s life had returned to his body. Therefore, life is much more than a mere mechanism made of matter.

Common sense reveals life to be non-material and invisible. So how is it possible (as some people insist) that something non-material could be produced by matter “evolving” over billions of years? How could something intangible and invisible come from collapsed atoms and a big bang? (And where did those theoretical ancient compacted atoms come from?)

The truth is, nobody can scientifically explain the origin of life. Science studies matter. Life is immaterial. Therefore science can offer nothing but time and chance as its “explanation” of the origin of life. Science clothes the most nieve idea, “It just happened on its on,” into high sounding terms and theories and pontifically pronounces that life developed by itself from some kind of sludge 100 billion (or whatever number they choose) years ago.

Meanwhile, the smallest child knows that crushing a butterfly destroys something far more that a little bit of matter. Who is wise among us?

Talk About Expensive Gas!

Recently I pulled up to a gas pump in Nashville prepared to pay almost $4.00 per gallon. As I got out of the car I was bombarded with very loud music coming from the car on the opposite side of the pump. (All the other pumps were occupied.)

As I put the nozzle into my car I began to be conscious of the words that were loudly pounding my brain. I heard the n-word, the f-word and many other obscenities. For some reason, I don’t enjoy having my mind filled with filth, so I tried to stop up my ears. (Have you ever tried to do that pumping gas?) Since one hand was required for the gas pump, this was the best I could do: I had one finger in one ear and I pressed my other ear into my shoulder. (I’m sure I looked like a contortionist.) However, in spite of my effort, vulgarities continued to barge into my brain.

So I looked around the pump to see what was going. A 30-something year-old woman was pumping gas into the vulgarity spewing car. Both front windows were rolled down and no one was in the vehicle.

I said: “Your car is really putting out some bad stuff.” See looked like she didn’t get what I was talking about. (Maybe she couldn’t hear me.)

So I said, a little louder: “I just heard the f-word and the n-word! Would you like it if someone said those words to you?”

She said: “My brother made that CD.”

“Well it is saying awful things,” I replied as I pulled my head back around to my side of the pump.

As I continued to pump the nasty music continued. I could literally feel evil and negativity jumping on me. Since I couldn’t block out the profanities by stopping my ears, I began to say the word, Jesus, over and over and louder and louder, attempting to get some relief from the spiritual pollution coming my way.

I had to put up a mental and spiritual fight for the next 10 minutes trying to drive the demonic words and attitude out of my mind. Now that was a high price for a tank of gas!

The Greatest Country In The World

The greatest country in the world not a democracy.  It is a kingdom with a benevolent ruler.

Yet, the greatest nation in the world is a great melting pot.  It’s citizens are originally from various countries all over the planet — from “every kindred and every tribe.”  However, none of its citizens are naturalized.  They are all born into this kingdom, supernaturally, by a new birth.

The greatest country in the world is “a holy nation, a royal priesthood,” yet it is not defined by physical boundaries.  It is transcendent — “in the world, but not of the world.”

Jesus Christ spoke often about the greatest country in the world.  He commanded His disciples to make this country their first priority in life.  He said:  “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (right living).”

The kingdom of God must be sought because its authority is resisted by human nature.  Its rules are more easily disobeyed than obeyed.  The kingdom of God is contrary to the political systems that rule planet earth.  Passionate and obedient loyalty to the greatest country in the world sets a person at odds with the nations of the world — making her/him a “fool for Christ.”

The kingdom of God has no military, no troops that use violence; yet it is militantly engaged in spiritual warfare.  To quote Paul of Tarsus:  “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal (physical) but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”  That is because the kingdom of God has no geography to defend as illustrated by this quotation from Jesus:  “The kingdom of God is within you.”

I love the kingdom of God and I love the great diversity of my fellow citizens in this greatest nation on earth who have been “translated out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God’s own dear Son.”

When you search the Scriptures you discover that the only nation worthy of using the phrase “God and country” — the only nation that truly and consistently represents God —  is the supernatural and invisible kingdom of God.

The Best Mall Of All

I am into consumerism, but not shopping for stuff. (Traditional shopping can be torture for me.) So my favorite mall is not one with retail stores.  The mall that gets me excited is Wisdom’s Mall — the public library.

I love libraries. They are stocked with my favorite consumer item — wisdom. In public libraries, you don’t get free shipping; you get free shopping. All that wonderful wisdom is your’s for the taking. What a deal! Somebody tell Dave Ramsey about this one!

Shopping for wisdom at the public library is the ultimate recycling. When you are finished with a book of wisdom, you take the book back, but keep the wisdom. There is absolutely no waste for our local landfill. Now that’s green!

Wisdom-shopping is so exciting. I am hooked on it. I love the thrill of finding inspiration that gives me hope and encouragement. I am delighted when I find information that gives me practical advice about how to live a better life.

I am always so thrilled with my wisdom-shopping discovery that I copy wisdom in a journals and keep it. My 3 dozen hand-written books of collected wisdom are a continual lift for me. Whenever I start to battle negative emotions, I pick one up and begin consume its wisdom. In short order, I’m inspired and encouraged.

I’m not sure how I got started wisdom-shopping. I think I began it as a way to deal with my insecurities. I started out as a book worm. I read every positive thinking book I could find. Then I became a tape worm, listening to every motivational cassette tape I could get.  For one period I attended a lot of seminars. Then I went through an internet phase, googling for scads of free wisdom.  Now I am back to books, reading several every month.

If you need a lift, why not go shopping for wisdom in a library? Shop ’till you drop your fears, worries, frustrations, hang-ups, and disappointments. Wisdom-shop ’till you stop all your negative thoughts. If you are like me, that will make you a lifetime wisdom-shopper.

Christopher Columbus The Salesman

Most of us think of Christopher Columbus as a great discoverer, but he was also a master salesperson. Before he could sail, he had to sell. Before he could begin his voyage of discovery that changed the world, he had to sell to his contemporaries what they thought was an utterly ridiculous idea! And that was no “one-call sale!”

Let’s look at the history.  Consider the circumstances and conditions that were stacked against Columbus. First, there was absolutely no market for a trans-Atlantic voyage. And hundreds of years of tradition and superstition practically guaranteed that there never would be.

Second. Although Columbus had made sea voyages as a passenger, he had never been the captain of a ship.

Third. Columbus was a foreigner (an Italian) living first in Portugal and then in Spain.

Fourth.  Columbus did not have sufficient money to fund such an adventure. In fact, the only one who could legally fund a voyage of discovery was a head of state – a king or queen. So his prospect list was rather short!

Fifth, his price was not cheap. In addition to needing ships and support, Columbus had a long list of personal demands including: a) a 10 percent commission on all commerce between his discoveries and the mother country; b) the title – Admiral of the Ocean Sea; c) the permanent position of “viceroy” or governor of all new territories; and d) all of the honors and rights were to be passed on to his heirs in “perpetuity.”

Remarkably, Columbus made the sale (on his own terms)! Modern salespeople could learn a lot from Columbus’ sales techniques. Columbus was propelled by a single-minded passion. He wholeheartedly believed he could reach Asia by crossing the Atlantic. Even though his belief was wrong, it gave him the inner stamina, conviction and confidence to make the sale!

Columbus never stopped closing! He didn’t mind asking for the order over and over and over! He spent seven years asking King John of Portugal to fund the voyage. Then he went to Spain and worked on Ferdinand and Isabella for seven more years before he finally got his yes.

Columbus helped others get what they wanted. He presented Ferdinand and Isabella a dream of glory. He appealed to their desires for wealth and for personal glory. He even appealed to their desire to spread their religious faith. He demonstrated to them that funding his voyage was the way to get what they most wanted in life.

Columbus continued to study, plan and chart his course. He researched in libraries. He talked to sailors. For 14 years, he continued to build his strategy and his case. He was on constant lookout for evidence to support his position! He concentrated on his dream and vision for the future and not on his problems.

Columbus kept his goal ever before him. He never let the passing of time – the long delay of his dream – discourage him. He never wavered in his “I won’t be denied” attitude.

Columbus kept his sales ability all of his life. On his last voyage to the New World, he explored the Nicaraguan coast. Unfortunately, in the shallow waters, ship worms attacked his ships and caused them to take on water. In desperation, Columbus headed for the main Spanish settlement in what is today the Dominican Republic.

However, he only made it as far as Jamaica. There, Columbus and his men were stranded, 500 miles away from the main settlement. To make matters worse, his men kept molesting the Indians.

After several months, the Indians planned to massacre the sailors. It was the night of February 29, 1504. As the Indians approached, Columbus remembered reading that there was going to be a lunar eclipse that night. The master salesman went to work. He told the Indians that his God was very powerful and would make them pay if they carried out the massacre. He told them that his God would cause a sign in the sky that very night.

Then the lunar eclipse happened. Amazed by this sign, the Indians left Columbus and his men alone. Eventually Columbus was rescued. This story illustrates two of the most important characteristics of a successful salesperson: 1) the ability to remain calm under pressure and 2) the ability to think on his feet!

Istanbul (Not Constantinople) — Nicholas Cabasilas Quotes

Nicholas Cabasilas was a passionate follower of Jesus Christ who lived in Constantinople in the 1300s, before the Ottoman Turks, led by Mohammed the Conqueror, over threw the city and named it Istanbul.

This history was made famous in a song called Istanbul (not Constantinapole) recorded by The Four Lads in 1953.  You can listen to it and see some pictures of Istanbul (not Constantinople) at this link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZfR33-m_tQ

I hope these quotations from Nicholas Cabasilas inspire and motivate you.

“The greatest joy follows the greatest love.”

“It is not possible for those who have not died to sin, to live for God.”

“It is altogether necessary that faith be shown forth in our deeds.”

“When love of the Savior produces nothing new or extaordinary in us, it proves that we have encountered no more than mere words about Him.”

“Restraining one’s soul by good thoughts leads to cessation from evil thoughts.”

“Being occupied with and employed in base things brings destruction to the soul.”

“The Old Covenant was a word which instructed; now it is Christ Himself who is present and disposes and forms the souls of men.”

“For him who has lost reverence for God, all that might have availed to restrain wickedness has been removed.”

Are You An Emulator Or An Impactor?

An emulator conforms to the thoughts ideas and opinions around him. He tries to blend in with his environment (often subconsciously rather than intentionally).

It is easy to be an emulator, just go with the flow. Don’t rock the boat. Chill out and don’t ask questions. The emulator is driven by a desire to be accepted, approved, and applauded. He fears rejection, criticism, being left out, or being called “judgmental.”

An impactor challenges and influences the ideas and opinions around her. She “speaks the truth in love” by boldly stating her opinions and attempting to convince others of her point of view. She has a solid belief system and is on a mission to convey her insights to others, no matter what the social cost.  An impactor is a missionary, influencing others; not a mission field, being brainwashed by society.

Nowadays we are bombarded with newspapers, television, billboards, radio, movies, junk mail, blogs, and spam email, as well as friends, neighbors, family, and coworkers — trying to get us to embrace popular (but self-destructive) behaviors and ideas.   Emulators gleefully embrace and follow societies self-destructive trends.  Impactors lovingly disagree and persuasively pursue purity, righteousness, & holiness.

We are constantly being influenced to lie, cheat, lust, abort babies, be greedy, get high, engage in cheapo sex, be vulgar, applaud sinful behavior, gamble, compromise, reject religion, look at pornography, insult others, cuss, and on and on.  If we publicly disagree with these behaviors, we are criticized and called “judgmental.”  (However, the concept of not judging, in no way implies that we should pretend other people are faultless or that all behaviors are equal.)

Society’s brainwashing never lets up. In such a pushy culture as ours, a neutral or passive position will be pulled into the popular parade of the perversion of the principles of morality accepted by the vast majority of the world’s cultures through out history. Only those willing to boldly head in a different direction can avoid marching with the modern mass media messages.

Emulators abound all around us. But the impactors are few.  Which are you?

A Man Made Over By Miracles

Keith Easley’s full blooded Cherokee grandmother taught him to love God and she prayed for him always. However, Keith, like most of us, had his own ideas. He wound up addicted to drugs and holding a leadership position in a gang.

In 1999, Keith had a dream in which God told him to leave the gang because He had something for Keith to do. The message in the dream was so real that Keith went and told his fellow gang members that he was leaving.

Two weeks later on July 18, 1999, one of Keith’s former associates walked up behind him and shot him in the head. The bullet tore through the entire left side of his face and his throat.

People got Keith to the emergency room and the doctors were working on him. Then he flat lined and he heard a doctor say: “There’s nothing else we can do; it’s between him and God now.

At that moment, Keith found himself in the presence of five beings. One of them told him to “sing to God.” Keith remembers beginning to sing. The next thing he knew, he woke up, saw his wife, and started crying. He thought he had died.

Keith required much reconstructive surgery for his face to be rebuilt with metal plates. As he was recovering, however, he found he still was dependent on drugs.

The next years he struggled with his addiction, unable to get completely free. Then one day in the summer of 2008, something told Keith to go for a walk and as he passed by the newly opened Berry Street Worship Center a few blocks from his home, something told him to go inside.

Keith was warmly received and shared his story. He said that he couldn’t stop using drugs, no matter how hard he tried. Keith was offered prayer, which he received and God did a miracle. From that moment on, he has not used drugs again.

Keith began to attend The Salvation Army Berry Street and gradually got more involved even becoming a solider. He started getting more and more in love with Jesus. Today he is a strong spiritual leader.

Every winter since his surgeries, Keith has had severe pain because of the plates in his face. Last November, when the pain was so bad, he was prayed for in a Berry Street meeting. The pain left and has not returned. His doctors were amazed.

When asked how he has changed so much Keith replies: “I have experienced freedom in the Spirit at Berry Street as people come together and share heart-felt testimonies of how God is working in their lives. Every week you can see Christ actually changing people’s lives. It’s real and powerful. I love my church!”
