Spiritual Gifts Are Holy Spirit Expressions Not Human Possessions

Spiritual gifts are manifestations of the Holy Spirit that occur when people sit at Jesus’ feet, hear His voice, and do what He says. Spiritual gifts are Holy Spirit expressions, not human possessions.  They flow through you, not to you.

Their purpose is to demonstrate the real presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ and to minister to (to serve) others; not to give status or recognition to the people they flow through.  Like smart phone apps, Holy Spirit manifestations have a specific point and purpose.  They are not just natural abilities and aptitudes that can be discovered by a inventory, a test, or an assessment.

We don’t use the Spirit’s gifts (His expressions).  The Spirit uses us to release His workings.  Any of His gifts can be released through any believer whenever He chooses.  They don’t belong to special or specific individuals.

The Holy Spirit is ready to release His gifts whenever Christ-followers gather for worship (if we don’t quench the Spirit and hold them back by programming them out of the meeting).  The Holy Spirit also seeks to release His gifts in our day-to-day lives.

As an example of Holy Spirit expressions, Paul lists nine Spirit manifestations in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.  By looking at them, we can better understand how the Spirit wants to flow through us.

Word of wisdom — This is a flash of godly insight, understanding, and or direction.  In a one-on-one situation it might be:  “It keeps coming to me that you can overcome that problem you told me about by asking your boss to forgive you.”  In a church meeting it might be: “I sense that the Holy Spirit wants us all to get on our knees and pray for our nation.”

Word of knowledge — This is a release of information that you have no natural way of knowing.  The Holy Spirit just deposits it in you by way of words, impressions, or pictures.  (Once my wife was praying for a 50-something year-old man and saw him on a skateboard.  She shared it with him and his mouth dropped.  He said something like:  “You had no way of knowing this, but ever since I’ve been married my wife has kidded me that one day I’m going to get out of the box and get on a skateboard.”

Faith — The gift of faith is an inner flow of deep trust in God — a supernatural release of strong confidence that a prayer is certain to be answered.

Gifts of healing — Gifts of healing occur when God uses one person’s prayer and/or faith to bring physical healing to another person.  (Once in church I saw a picture of me putting my hands on a man’s cheeks and praying that his constant pain [due to a steel plate in his face] would be healed.  I told him and the others in the gathering what I saw and asked if he minded if I do it.  He said no.  The pain stopped and two years later he’s had no more pain.  Here’s his story.)

Working of miracles — This is when God uses human faith and/or prayers to produce a supernatural change in the physical world.  (Someone just told me that once she really needed some money and asked God to meet her need.  She was in her car and searched through her purse.  Then she looked around the car and looked again in her purse and saw two one-hundred dollar bills.)

Prophesy — This is speaking unrehearsed words that come directly from the Holy Spirit.  It often happens when people are spontaneously praying and/or sharing from their heart about what God means to them.  (Jesus told His disciples that when they were brought before councils, they shouldn’t plan what they will say, but instead the Holy Spirit will give them His words on the spot.)

Discerning of Spirits — This is when God shows you the source of something that is being said or done.  There are three possible sources for just about everything people say or do:  1) human desire; 2) the influence of spiritual evil; or 3) the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in a language that you don’t know — Although sometimes controversial, this is really a simple, but profound release of the Holy Spirit.  It is supernatural.  By bypassing the brain (because the brain doesn’t comprehend it) it gives the Spirit the freedom to flow through us unimpeded by our opinions and/or will.  It is primarily for private use, however, in 1 Corinthians 14, Paul gives some guidelines and limitations on its public use.

Interpretation of a language you don’t know — If someone supernaturally speaks in an unknown language in a public meeting, Paul says that someone needs to tell everybody what was said.  This is not a human translation of the language, but a supernatural revealing of the meaning of the words that were spoken.

When Christians gather, God wants to release manifestations of His Spirit.  People, especially in our post-Christian generation, won’t be convinced to follow and obey Christ by human wisdom.  They need to see and experience the reality of the living Christ, not just hear a talk about Him.  That’s why Christ-followers must be freed up from programs and allowed to follow the Spirit when they gather in His name.

Believing Outside The Box — Creativity In Church

Thinking outside the box is a popular phrase.  Taco Bell even played on it in their commercial by encouraging people to think outside the bun.

Creative, out of the box thinking, has brought tremendous advancements to society.  However one group in society seems stuck in the box of routine and tradition — the Christian church.  Perhaps it is time for the church to believe beyond the bounds of the familiar — to color outside the lines — to be visionary.  God has some novel ideas!

Why not reinvent the Sunday morning church service (while still being faithful to biblical theology)?  We believers could move beyond Sunday morning established procedures and do some Walt Disney style imagineering.

This is happening at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee.  We are believing beyond the box of routine religion and reinventing the Sunday morning church service. If you are in Nashville, come and see for yourself.  Experience Spirit-led, nonconforming, open sharing and testimony, as everyday people eloquently show and tell what God has done — Sundays @ 10:45; 225 Berry St., 37207.

Living Backwards

Are we 21st Century Western Christians living backwards?
Resisting the Holy Spirit’s promptings . . .
While obeying the seductive commands of our culture;
And fulfilling our own desires.

The human heart is a fireplace. It can burn clean and pure with the love of God. Or smoke and choke on selfish desires putting a damper on all of life.

A deployed damper is deeply damaging.

Perhaps we need to open up and be set ablaze with the supernatural gas of God’s power, presence, and love.

Church — A Man-Led Pulpet Show Or A Supernatural Puppet Show?

Church is a like puppet show. God attempts to animate His people by releasing His Spirit through them. If they resist and/or ignore the promptings of God, not much happens — the puppets remain lifeless and blank-faced in their places.

013

However, when people surrender to and obey God’s promptings, an amazing demonstration of the Presence of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ begins to come together as individuals (led by the Spirit) show and tell what God has done.

When church is a platform-controlled, one-man pulpet show, people become passive spectators. However, when the ordinary people present, as active participants, begin to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit (like puppets animated by the hand of God), Christ’s power and Presence pervade the place. And it’s awe-producing!

Here’s a quotation from Paul of Tarsus that describes how this worked in the First Century Church:  “If everyone is prophesying, when an unbeliever or an uneducated person comes in he will be convicted and examined by everything that’s happening.  His secret, inner heart will become known, and so he will bow down to the ground and worship God, declaring, ‘God is truly among you!'” –1 Corinthians 14:24-25 (ISV)

This has actually happened several times at a participatory church in Nashville — The Salvation Army Berry Street.  The woman dressed in red, who is being prayed over in this picture, only came to Berry Street one time.  As far as we could tell, no one present knew who she was.  As people various people shared and testified, as led by the Spirit, she began to share secrets from her heart and then let us gather around and pray for her.  The Spirit deeply moved us all.  Many were in tears.  And we all knew that God was among us.

Come experience this for yourself — 225 Berry Street, 37207 — on Sundays at 10:45 am.

Spirit Ministry or Word Ministry?

Has Christian ministry lost it’s ability to grasp and transform people?  It appears so.  Churches are in decline.  Our culture is almost completely secular, if not anti-Christian.  Scholars have pronounced it to be post-Christian.

However, although it appears that human ministry has exhausted its effectiveness, there is still hope for radical change and a return to Christian roots.  That hope is in the ministry of the Spirit.  (These ideas are based on a quote by Paul of Tarsus that follows them.)

Human ministry is focused on the letter — words communicated from one human mind to another.  However, the letter kills spiritual life.  It distracts people from their heart and moves them into a mental focus.

The letter is based on The Ten Commandments, given by God through Moses (and other Scriptures).  These God-inspired words came with glory.  Moses’ face even glowed when he presented them to his people.

However, there is something even greater than The Ten Commands and the written words of God.  That is the ministry of the Spirit — “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Why?  Written and/or spoken words come from outside a man.  They enter his consciousness through the natural processes of vision and/or hearing.  However, the ministry of the Spirit is released within a person.  It apprehends and changes a person from the inside out.  The physical sense of hearing and/or seeing cannot communicate the ministry of the Spirit.  It is heard by the ears of the heart and seen by a person’s inner (non-material) eyes.  The Bible calls this revelation.  It is supernatural.

So why do churches focus so much on the spoken word and so little on direct encounter with the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit is beyond human control.  We can limit His working (what Paul calls quenching the Spirit) but we cannot control what the Spirit does.  While a preacher’s spoken words are very much under his control.  Perhaps we quench the Spirit because we want to maintain control or order.

Well controlled religion isn’t working in the 21st Century.  Perhaps it’s time we connected with the greater glory and allowed the Spirit to freely work in our midst.  What if we allowed the Spirit to control our church services, rather than men?  We would see amazing glory.

This is not just theory.  It’s Bible.  And it is being lived out and demonstrated in Nashville at The Salvation Army Berry Street.  Come see.  Sundays at 10:45 am, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.

“He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.  Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?  If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!  For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory.  And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts.”  –Paul of Tarsus in 1 Corinthians 3:6-11

What The Church Can Learn From Basketball Officials

From preschool to the NBA Playoffs — from high school to March Madness — basketball officials could serve as great examples of an alternative way for pastors to conduct church services.

Rather than being the center of attention and running the church service from the podium; perhaps a church pastor could be like a basketball official:  1) Stay out of the limelight; 2) Keep a close watch on what is going on; and 3) Only take actual control of the church meeting if something disrupts the Spirit’s leadership. 4) Then correct the meeting’s misdirection; 5) Turn the meeting back over to the Holy Spirit; and 6) Fade back into the background.

If you would like to see a basketball-official-style church meeting, visit The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 on Sundays at 10:45.

A Week Of Signs In The Heavens & On Earth (February 2013)

Wow!  Earth saw some incredible signs and wonders this  week!
* The most powerful religious man on earth had the courage to buck 700 years of tradition and obey God’s leading in his own heart, as he resigned as Pope, acknowledging that God, not a man, owns the church.
*  Within a few hours lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome (where the Pope ministers), as if God shouted:  “Finally a human religious leader is willing to lay down his title, control, and authority, and step aside for Me!”
* Then a huge meteor blew up over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk blasting the windows out all over the town and injuring more than 1,200 people.  Had it hit a city (instead of blowing up in the atmosphere), it would have killed tens of thousands of people.
*  Just a few hours after the meteor, an asteroid, half the size of a football field, barely missed our planet, coming closer to earth than some of our man-made satellites.  Had it hit a populated area of our planet, it could have killed millions.
So what’s going on?
When human leaders surrender control of God’s church to Him, amazing power is released in the spiritual realm.  Jesus, Himself, is the head of the church.  No human has the right to rule a church, be that a denominational head or a local pastor.  Jesus wants to rule His church.  Religious/spiritual leaders are merely servants to humbly hear Him and obey His voice; not religious rulers to “lord it over” God’s people and/or feed their own egos.  Pope Benedict showed the kind of humility this week that can help release a worldwide move of God if his example is followed by other Christian leaders.

To quote Pope Benedict:  “In the decisive moments of our lives, we face a juncture, do we want to follow the ego or God, individual interests or the one who is truly good?”

Holy Spirit Surfing–A Fresh Wave Of Churching

Holy Spirit surfing is a fresh, creative way of doing church — an innovative style of churching.  However, it’s not new — it was written about in the New Testament (see 1 Corinthians 14:26) and was the common practice of the First Century church.

Holy Spirit surfing is to glide with the Guide inside.  It is to go with the Spirit’s inner flow rather than following a structured program.

However, Holy Spirit surfing was gradually lost and mostly forgotten over the first two or three centuries of Christianity.  It morphed into a rigid and controlled order of worship called liturgy.

Eventually some denominations even began to boast of being liturgical churches (high church) and some claimed to be non-liturgical (low church).  However, even the so-called non-liturgical churches followed a man-made program, and although it was less formal and less complicated than the liturgical churches, it was still quite rigid.

The standard Protestant program generally consists of a call to worship, a prayer, two or three songs, taking an offering, a Scripture reading, a sermon, a closing song/altar call, and a benediction.  (Some denominations throw in a responsive reading and/or a musical performance by a choir or individual.  And some contemporary churches have innovated a bit by stretching out the songs to a much longer and expressive period of praise and worship.)

However, during the past few years some people have been discovering and experiencing a fresh wave of doing church.  This rediscovery of Spirit surfing has been called organic church.

Holy Spirit surfing involves setting aside the agenda, putting down the program, and allowing the Spirit, Himself, to direct the church meeting by prompting whoever He wishes to share a testimony, a song, a word of encouragement, a prayer, a Scripture, a gift of the Spirit, a brief teaching, a prayer request, etc.

The amazing thing about Holy Spirit surfing is that what first appears to be random soon comes together in a beautiful tapestry of a refreshing demonstration of God’s presence and power.  It becomes apparent to everyone present that the living God, Himself, is actually directing the meeting through various individuals.

Here’s a quotation from Samuel Logan Brengle, an early leader of The Salvatiion Army, about Spirit surfing:  “When the Holy Spirit comes, He takes possession of those bodies that are freely and fully presented to Him, and He touches their lips with grace; He shines peacefully and gloriously on their faces; He flashes beams of pity and compassion and heavenly affection from their eyes; He kindles a fire of love in their hearts, and lights the flame of truth in their minds.”

The wave of Spirit surfing is just beginning to roll through 21st Century Christianity.  Will you catch it?

If you would like to see Spirit surfing in action, come visit The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville on Sunday mornings at 10:45 — 225 Berry St., 37207.
