Shocking! Christianity Is Current Events

Christianity is the current of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ flowing through His people.  It’s not religion, ritual, doctrine, or tradition.

Church is living Christianity operating among human beings.  The living Christ cannot be controlled and contained but cruises through His people like an electric current; unless we break the connection and quench the Spirit.  Church is like a group of people all holding on to a live electric wire.

Therefore, Christianity is current events — events produced by the current of Jesus Christ flowing from within His people.  When there is no Christ current, there is no Christianity (or church).

Christianity carries the Spirit’s current; church is not a showcase for religious programming but a demonstration of the living Christ working among real people.  It is radical obedience to Jesus, not passively listening to a message about Him.

Is the living current of Christ flowing in and through you or do you have a dead battery under your hood?   “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Holding Hands In Prayer — It’s Not For Sissies.

Holding hands in prayer is not for sissies.  It is an amazing connect with the living God and His power.

I grew up going to church but never saw people hold hands in prayer.  I think my church was too formal and sophisticated for that.

Then one day I dropped by an informal worship gathering in my dorm at The University of Tennessee Martin for the first time.  They announced that they were going outside to pray behind the dorm.  I was somewhat swept along in the crowd and found myself under the stars, holding hands in a circle of about 60 people.  I was uncomfortable with this, but I felt power moving through me and stirring in my heart as young men and women honestly and tenderly expressed themselves to God.  I have never been the same, passionately pursing Jesus, since that moment many years ago.

Since then I’ve held hands in prayer with many different kinds of people in many different places, and it has always been a powerful and moving experience.  Many times I’ve asked strangers on inner city streets if I could pray with them and they have bowed their heads and stuck out their hands for me to take.  And when we started praying, I’ve seen tears roll down the faces of people who appear to be very hard.

I’ve held hands and prayed with people in counseling offices, homes, drug and alcohol rehabs, hospitals, schools, funeral homes, businesses, stadiums, church meetings, and the open air.  The results are always amazing.  The atmosphere changes; attitudes are transformed; a sense of God’s presence, comfort, and love moves among us.

Holding hands in prayer is like touching the current in a live electric wire — shocking.  It can make you jerk or cry, or swoon, or jump or moan.  It’s not for sissies.

But if you can muster the courage to give it a go and stay with it as a lifestyle; holding hands in prayer with sincere people will change your life.

If you would like to connect with some hand holding prayers in Nashville, Tennessee, come visit The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry Street, 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45 and take hold of a live wire — the Holy Spirit flowing though fellow human beings.

Church flows from the Spirit; it’s not produced by a program.

Church is God’s orchestra, playing His symphony, as each member focuses on, listens to, and obeys the Conductor — the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

Come and experience God’s orchestra playing in Nashville every Sunday morning at 10:45 as each member shows and tells what God has done.  It’s not at the Schammerhorn, the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand Ole Opry, or L.P. Field (the Titans’ stadium) but @ The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee, 37207.

Church is Son-shine radiating through people as they show and tell what God has done and is doing in their lives. It’s not a dry, formal service.

Are You Asking “Why?”

Asleep to the Spirit,

Deaf to our conscience,

Liberated from moral standards,

Under the influence of violent and decadent media,

We ask “Why?”

Why all the mass shootings?

Why so much frustration, depression, and drug abuse?

Why so much child abuse; so many dead beat dads and unwanted children?

Why such anger and fear and political dysfunction and so many attack ads?

Why all the broken relationships and alienated family members?

Why so much shop lifting, cheating, lying, and fraud?

Technology has brought about the paperless office. Spiritual awakening will bring about the agendaless church meeting. Go agendaless — let the Spirit lead!

“The Salvation Army was born in the superheated fires of revival, coming into being through obedience, dedication, and holy courage. . . Holy testimonies blistered our lips and knee drills (prayer meetings) were crowded with earnest, believing prayers. That sovereign, sudden, searching work of God appears to be missing (nowadays) except in isolated pockets. . . We need to stand before the Lord in our true state, ‘poor, miserable and blind,’ desperate for revival.” –Colonel Brian Tuck in the January 2013 issue of “War Cry” magazine, the national magazine of The Salvation Army USA

Go agendaless!  Let the Holy Spirit lead His church meetings.

The Incredible Power of Christ Skills

How are your Christ skills? Many people live their lives without basic Christ skills — the abilities to connect with and release the life-transforming power of Christ in themselves and in others.

However, when you look into history, you discover that saints, spiritual leaders, and truly devoted believers, had the ability to consistently follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.  They had Christ skills.

Christ skills:

* Are not automatic.  They must be learned and developed over time.  This process is often called spiritual formation.

* Are not pie-in-the-sky religion, but practical and day-to-day abilities to live a better life.

* Bring freedom from mental, emotional, and spiritual bondage and/or torment, producing peace of mind and heart.

* Overcome cravings, compulsions, and addictions.

* Relieve guilt and shame.

* Remove stress and anxiety producing both inner healing and physical healing.

* Produce deep and abiding joy, regardless of outward circumstances.

* Enable a person to live in Christimacy — an intimate, surrendered, and obedient relationship with Jesus.

* Can change society by changing individuals and creating a contagion that can carry throughout communities and even nations.

If a person has never had a particular skill (say playing the piano) they don’t know what they are missing; but if they take the time and effort to develop a skill, then a whole new world opens up to them.  This is far more the case with Christ skills.

People can assist others with the development of Christ skills, but they can’t teach them.  Christ skills are taught from within, by the Holy Spirit (sometimes called the inner Light, the still, small voice, or the anointing).

The New Testament puts it this way:  “As for you, the anointing you received from Him (God) remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in Him.”

Are Christ skills worth the effort?  You bet they are!

Christ skills are essential.  Without them life will range between miserable and tolerable, but won’t rise any higher than that.  Effective Christ skills, however, can bring life to the place of “joy unspeakable and full of glory.”

So why ignore the Greatest Teacher who still speaks, still guides, and still changes lives?  Take His classes, custom-made for you.  They are going on 24/7/365, and all you have to do put in the time and hard work to listen, learn, and obey.

Mental Health Note — Sinsanity

Here’s a mental health note about sinsanity.

If you try to build your sanity on sin and self, you will sink under the sifting sands of sinsanity.  Sinsanity will drive you hazy.  Your conscience will become dull.  You won’t know right from wrong.  You will feel lost, confused, and alienated; bossed about by your cravings, compulsions, and desires; gone with the whim.

However, if you build your sanity on the strength of the solid rock of surrender, submission, and obedience to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ, you will stand strong, stable, and secure in the arms of His love.

Here’s the key to genuine, biblical Christianity:  Christ is sanity! Cling to Him.

A better way to pray

Than sittin’ in pews

Hearin’ preacha views.

We got da great news!

Let everybody share

A prayer or a care.

Take da flag

Out of da bag;

Blood & Fire,

A burnin’ desire

For a flood of Jesus’ blood

To change da neighborhood.

Why Some Christians Don’t Want To Be Called Christian

Some people of faith who follow Jesus Christ don’t want to be known by the word Christian.  They prefer other names such as Christ-follower or believer.  Why?

*  Some people feel that the word Christian has been so compromised that it now means nothing more than a vague, commitment-free acknowledgement of the religion known by that name.

*  Others believe that the term Christian has been politicized and taken over by certain political views that they don’t want to be identified with.

*  Still others feel that Christians have been maligned, mocked, and marginalized in Western society to the point that they want a fresh identity that more truly reflects the biblical ideal of being a Christian.

That’s why I am proposing a new, alternative name for Christians:  Christimates.

A Christimate is someone who lives in daily intimacy with and obedience to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.  A Christimate is committed to Christimacy (intimacy with and obedience to the living, resurrected Jesus Christ).
