The Amazing Process of Grace

“God loves you, but not the dumb things you do.”  (Does anyone never do dumb things?)

The dumb things we think, say, or do separate us from God. But God offers us an intimate relationship with Him through the process of His grace:

1) His sacrifice (Christ died to pay the dept of separation caused by your dumb deeds.)

2) His conviction (A deep awareness that you have misbehaved and have offended God’s holiness.)

3) Repentance (Your genuine sorrow for, asking His forgiveness for, and turning away from your dumb thoughts, words, and deeds that offend God.)

4) Growth in grace (Your ongoing increasing in closeness to and obedience to God through the process of grace.)

Pride can prevent you from living in God’s grace. “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Formal Order Of Worship For First Pentecost

Order Of Worship For First Pentecost (If They Had One)

  • Welcome & Announcements
  • Days Of Ongoing Prayer
  • Sudden Interruption By Sound Of Violent Wind
  • Flames Of Fire Falling From The Ceiling On Everybody
  • Everybody Rises And Speaks Different Languages
  • Time Of Confusion And Curiosity As We Welcome A Crowd Of Latecomers
  • Scripture Reading: Joel 2:28-32
  • Message — “Jesus Is Alive And We Are Witnesses Of It”
  • Interruption Of Message By Congregation Saying: “Brothers, What Shall We Do?”
  • Challenge To Repent
  • 3,000 People Become Christ Followers

However, Pentecost wasn’t programmed by a man and it didn’t stick to a printed order of worship. Pentecost was Spirit-led and it started a chain reaction that spread Christianity all over the world. (Since that first Pentecost was so powerful, perhaps we need more Spirit-led, unprogrammed church meetings!)

Pentecost is about God using everyday people (like fishermen and tax collectors) in prophecy, visions, & dreams as prompted by the Spirit. Peter describes what happened at Pentecost by quoting the Old Testament.

“This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.'”

To prophesy is to speak words directly from God. (God says:  “Open your mouth and I will fill it.”)

Visions are pictures that God puts into your mind. (Notice the images that come to your mind and recognize which ones are from God.)

Dreams are godly goals that passionately burn in your heart. (Martin Luther King had a passionate, God-inspired dream. Do you?)

Pentecost — A Holy Spirit Takeover Of A Church Service!

Pentecost — let’s not just talk about, let’s experience it!  We need Pentecost to be more than a distant, religious memory.  We desperately need it to be a present, ongoing reality in our individual lives and in our churches!

Pentecost is a Holy Spirit takeover of a church meeting that overrides human programming and fills Christ-followers with supernatural power, sending them out of the building with contagious fire in their hearts that spreads far and wide, turning multitudes of new people into life-long, passionate, obedient followers of the living, resurrected Jesus Christ!

If there is ever a time to step beyond human programming and to do what the Holy Spirit tells you to do in a church meeting, it’s Pentecost Sunday! Your willingness to obey the prompting of the Spirit in your church today might just be the spark that releases the fire of Pentecost. “Quench not the Spirit.”

“On this Pentecost Sunday, I pray that there will be a great moving of God’s Spirit among His people around the world.” –General André Cox (international leader of The Salvation Army)  Let it be God!  How we need it in the 21st Century!

Powerful Quotes About Pentecost

“There is a distinctive magic to Pentecost — full-blown ecstasy, an almost illicit experience of God. That first Pentecost, after tongues as of fire rested on everyone and Jesus’ friends and family spoke in other tongues, people gathered around to watch at nine in the morning. What they saw didn’t look like many Sunday morning church services. What they saw looked more like the aftermath of a party.’  All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine.’ They weren’t drunk, of course, but they looked like it. Wouldn’t that be something, to be so taken up with God that onlookers think we’re drunk with sweet wine? Wouldn’t it be remarkable to ride the edge of ecstasy?” –Jack Levison

“Pentecost . . . The Holy Spirit fills the disciples and they speak in tongues they likely do not understand themselves. It is an uncontrolled public witness – uncontrolled by human agendas – as well as a transformative movement of God. It honestly feels like choosing between someone’s corporate controlled image of a smooth, efficient machine and the somewhat chaotic, yet entirely creative, dynamic movement-making frenzy produced by the Holy Spirit’s uncontrolled presence in the lives of a group of believers willing to risk it all for the Kingdom. I’ll take the latter any day of the week.” –Bill Mefford

“Do we measure up to the standard of Pentecost? The gift of the Spirit is the gift of power, and the lack of power is due to the absence of His indwelling fullness.” –Samuel Chadwick

“Pentecost means the glory of God’s power and the power of God’s glory. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you and enters into you, as He came in that Upper Room, filling the house and those sitting in it, you too will know both the glory of God’s power and the power of His glory, and will worship Him.” –Marie E. Brown

“We need faith in the power of the God of Pentecost to convict and convert three thousand in a day. Faith in the mighty God who can quicken a dead soul into life in a moment; faith in moral and spiritual revolution.” –A.C. Dixon

“Look down and see this waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost;
We want another Pentecost,
Send the fire today.”
–William Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army

“When you strip it of everything else, Pentecost stands for power and life. That’s what came into the church when the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost.” ―David Wilkerson

“I’m sick and tired of (only) reading about church history; let’s make some by the grace of God!” –Leonard Ravenhill

“That which happened at Pentecost is the biggest thing that ever happened. And now the biggest question of all is, has it happened to you and me? Have ye received the Holy Ghost?” –Samuel Chadwick

“Since the days of Pentecost, has the whole church ever put aside every other work and waited upon Him for ten days, that the Spirit’s power might be manifested? We give too much attention to method and machinery and resources, and too little to the source of power.” – J. Hudson Taylor

“Pentecost offers a chance to confess our failure to live by the Spirit and to ask the Lord to fill us afresh with His power.” –Mark D. Roberts

“Pentecost is an invitation to dream. For when a community of faith quits dreaming dreams, it has little to offer either its members or the wider world. These dreams involve adopting a new perspective on what’s possible, rousing our creativity to free us from conventional expectations. They help us see that maybe what we thought was outlandish actually lies within reach. –Matthew L. Skinner

“Pentecost has not created an alternative mythology with which to secularize and commercialize it. It has not created a figure like a fat, jolly man in a red suit or a large bunny. Stores don’t stock special items for the Feast of Pentecost. In fact, the Feast of Pentecost comes and goes in the church year without the world even noticing.” –Mark Surburg

Participatory Pentecost

The first Pentecost was participatory as the power and presence of the Holy Spirit fell on all the people present in the place and they all spoke up and praised God as prompted by the Spirit. Pentecost was not a prearranged program presented from a pulpit but an outpouring of the Spirit on praying people. Even Peter’s message was Spirit-prompted, rather than planned and prepared ahead of time.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” –Acts 2:4

When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, every believer present was prompted to speak words directly given by the Spirit. This released so much spiritual power that 3,000 people became passionate Christ-followers that day.  So why did the church get away from allowing everyday believers to speak Spirit-prompted words and replace Spirit-led spontaneity with pulpit-led programs, liturgy, and tradition?

On Pentecost Sunday we need more than a religious remembrance of Pentecost.  We need a life-transforming experience of Pentecost.

“Look down and see this waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost;
We want another Pentecost,
Send the fire today.”
–William Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army

Living Water Surge Protectors Limit Pentecostal Power

Religious surge protectors can suppress (quench) the flowing of the Holy Spirit both in churches and in individuals. Paul of Tarsus put it this way: “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away.”

A fresh, new Pentecost can override our religious surge protectors and release the Spirit-flows that Jesus promised in John 17:38-39: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

Everyday is a good day to let God break down any dams that hold back the free flowing of the Holy Spirit and to let God’s rivers run rigorously and unrestricted.

21st Century — Get Ready For God’s Fire-Fall & Spirit-Flow!

It’s coming!  Get ready for God’s fire-fall & Spirit-flow!

On Pentecost Sunday we celebrate God’s fire-fall and Spirit-flow releasing the current of His supernatural power in and through ordinary Christ-followers and transforming them into spiritual powerhouses setting the captives of culture and compulsions free to burn with passion for Jesus. Get ready, world! It happened in the First Century & it will happen again in the 21st Century!

“We need another Pentecost!” –William Booth, cofounder of The Salvation Army

Pentecost Sunday is about the release of the Spirit’s current surging through ordinary believers and turning them into spiritual powerhouses who break the bondage of sin in themselves and in other people by creating a contagion that sets people ablaze with love and passion for the living, resurrected Jesus! This happened in the beginning of the church and it will soon happen again in our time! Bring another Pentecost, God!

Spirit-Prompted Words Are Better Than Any Teleprompter!

Spirit-prompted words are better than any teleprompter!  Politicians, public speakers, and even some preachers use teleprompters. However, as Christ-followers, we have something far superior to a teleprompter.

We have the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit that will release words through us, directly from God, as we speak. The Bible puts it this way: “Open your mouth and I will fill it.” Perhaps, if we relied more on the Spirit’s prompting and less on our on planning and thinking, we wouldn’t be so intimidated about speaking up about Jesus.

If you feel prompted to do something and you don’t want to do it, then you know that prompting isn’t you. If the prompting agrees with Scripture and is morally right and isn’t destructive or harmful, then you know that prompting isn’t from the devil or an evil source. Therefore it most likely is from God. So step out and obey it, even if you are scared. The presence and power of God that is manifested through your obedience will demonstrate that the prompting was truly from God.

Here is an example of a prompting from God (see previous for more about promptings):  Recently, I was in a large Salvation Army officers meeting and someone was asking people to come to the front and pray. I felt a prompting to go forward, but I didn’t want to do it. However, after a couple of minutes, I gave in, went forward, and knelt in prayer. In a moment someone knelt beside me and put his arm around me. I open my eyes and it was a friend. He said: “God was telling me to come forward, but I didn’t want to do it, so I said, ‘Lord, if this is really you, have Steve Simms go forward,’ and then you did!”

If I hadn’t obeyed, my friend wouldn’t have obeyed and both of our hearts would be a bit more resistant to God today. It is so important that we believers in the 21st Century begin to obey God’s promptings! Nothing less with reach this generation!

You’ll experience life-transforming power if you use spiritual wifi to login to the Holy Spirit’s network and follow His instructions!  When truth is denied inside, you’ve lied to yourself; and self-deception drops your God reception.  Until you know God inside, you won’t be fully satisfied!

We think of surrendering to the Holy Spirit as an individual thing, but perhaps it is also something that we need to do when we meet together as a church. Perhaps we need to yield our program and our agenda to the Spirit and let Him personally direct the meeting according to His plan and program instead of ours.

We think that church is supposed to be focused on a solitary preacher, however, Jesus said: “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Are we quenching the Spirit or are we letting Him speak?
