Why Is Christmas The Most Celebrated Day Of The Year?

Why all the fuss and effort to celebrate the Christmas season? You know. The most celebrated day of the year is about the arrival of Jesus Christ on planet Earth. Isn’t it amazing all the time, effort, and money that is spent to celebrate Jesus? Why do we celebrate Jesus so?

Hope: Jesus gives hundreds of millions of people hope that there is more to life than random, meaningless existence. He inspires us to believe that there is a God who loves us as individuals — a God who is eager for us to respond to His love and like the rebellious and runaway son, return to Him.

Freedom: People around the world have been set free from self-destructive behaviors by Jesus and empowered to live a life of love, self-sacrifice, and morality. Their transformation shows us all what Jesus can do in a human life.

An inner witness: Something inside the human heart testifies that Jesus’ life and birth is more than that of a mere human being. His life moves so many of us to the depths of our being — stirs in us an inner passion to know and faithfully serve Him. Even when we try to deny the truths about Jesus, there is an inner witness that calls us back to Him.

Presence: Jesus cannot be confined to history and religion. He steps out of ritual and tradition into present reality. So many people in our world have personally encountered Jesus Christ alive and working in our time.

Enhance your Christmas celebrations.  Come experience the living Christ with us at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN, 37207 — Sundays at 10:45.

Creatively Changing Christmas Songs To Celebrate Christ More

Have you ever noticed that a great many Christmas songs have little or nothing to do with Jesus Christ.  Since Christmas is when we celebrate His birthday, I thought it might be good to tweak some Christmas songs and Christmas carols and make them more focused on Christ.

So, straight from Music City, I am creatively changing Christmas songs to celebrate Christ more.  Can you identify the original song or carol?

* Have Yourself A Happy Birthday, Jesus

* Oh Mighty One Of Bethlehem, We Worship You Today

* Grandma Got Right With Jesus In The Rain, Dear

* I Saw Mommy Worship Jesus Christ, On Her Knees With Tears Of Joy, Last Night

* Joy To The World, Lord You Have Come, I Now Receive You King

* Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus All The Way; Oh What Fun It Is To Worship Jesus Everyday, Hey

* O Cross Of Christ, O Cross Of Christ, How Forgiving Your Mercy

* Jesus Christ Rock

* Holy One, Awesome One, I love You, Yes I do; Jesus, Lord At Your Birth

* Jesus Christ Is Coming To Town

* I’m Beginning To Love You More, Lord Jesus, Everywhere I Go

Confronting The Christmas Claims — Conscious Contact With God

The original Christmas is full of contact with God. The ordinary becomes the extraordinary as people encounter God’s Presence and power.

A physical new star in the heavens becomes a messenger from Heaven, directing wise men hundreds of miles to the Christ Child. They sacrifice much time, effort, and resources to follow the physical star, motivated by stirring in their heart. Then they worship the Babe.

Mary (Jesus’ mother), and Zachariah and Elizabeth (John the Baptist’s parents) are overcome by the Spirit of God and speak beautiful prophetic words from God that are treasured to this very day.

Shepherds (one of the lowliest occupations at the time) run around Bethlehem excitedly telling everybody that they had seen angels who had told them the Messiah had been born in their small town. “And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.”

Eight days later, Simeon of Jerusalem was “guided by the Spirit” to see Jesus circumcised in the Temple. The New Testament says: “It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah.” When he saw Jesus, Simeon took Him in his arms and moved by the Spirit, declared Jesus to be: “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to Your people Israel.”

At that very moment, Anna, an 84 year-old widow who continually prayed and fasted in the Temple, walked up to the Baby. Then she also began to speak in the power of the Spirit about Jesus.

Jesus, the light for revelation, still shines in the 21st Century, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary and demonstrating His Presence and love with many spiritual and physical signs and wonders.

Christmas Claim — Who Was/Is Mary’s Son?

A classic Christmas carol asks the question: What Child Is This?  And that is a not just a nice song, but a very important question to ask at Christmas time.

Who was/is Mary’s Baby Boy? The New Testament gives some amazing answers to that question. Luke reports that an angel appeared to some shepherds with glad Christmas tidings: “Today in the city of David was born to you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” But what do those titles mean?

Savior: A Savior is a rescuer, a deliverer. But what do humans need to be rescued or delivered from? An angel told Joseph: “You are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins.” If you observe hurting humanity, it is hard to deny that we need to be saved and delivered from our self-destructive attitudes, thoughts, and actions. Can this Child save us?

Christ: Christ is not a name, but a title. It is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Messiah. The Christ or Messiah was the long-awaited “Anointed One” Who was prophesied for centuries by Old Testament prophets. Can this New Born be God’s Anointed One?

Lord: The ancient Hebrews, in order to avoid using God’s name in vain, called Him Lord. Lord means “Absolute Master.” Can the Child in the manger be the Lord?

The New Testament also calls Jesus, Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” Can the Christmas Babe be God in human flesh?

These are very important questions for the Christmas season and my opinion or your opinion really matters little. What matters is reality. Is Jesus really the Christ, the Lord, the Savior, and God with us? Or are these titles merely religious sentiment?

How can we discover the truth about Jesus? 1) Examine the historical documents. Set aside anti-supernatural prejudice and read the New Testament with an open mind and heart. 2) Ask the Whoever or Whatever who designed and fashioned you to reveal to you the truth. If Someone or Something could create such a marvelous being as you, surely He can communicate with you, if you are only willing to hear.

Christmas Claim — Angels

The popular, traditional Christmas carol, Angels We Have Heard On High, points out one the astounding claims made by Christmas — that supernatural beings from God were communicating to humans and celebrating Christ’s birth with them. The New Testament does not make these claims as myths or as tall tales, but as fact. The Christmas events involving angels either actually happened in the real world or didn’t happen. The Bible claim leaves no middle ground.

An angel appeared to priest Zachariah and told him that he and his wife Elizabeth, who was childless and beyond menopause, would have a son and that they were to name him John. (He became John the Baptist) Although Zachariah saw and heard the angel, Zachariah didn’t believe that having a son was possible. John was born 9 months later.

An angel appeared to Mary and told her the outlandish news that she would become pregnant as a virgin and have a supernatural son.  Of course, logically, Mary’s fiance, Joseph, didn’t believe her pregnancy was supernatural, so he was going to break the engagement. However, an angel appeared to him in a dream and confirmed to him that her pregnancy was by the supernatural working of the Holy Spirit.

The New Testament claims that “a multitude of the heavenly hosts” appeared to some shepherds (who by the way were considered to be among the lowest people in society) announcing and celebrating the birth of Jesus.  An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, two more times, warning him to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt and then telling them to return to Nazareth.

The New Testament claim of angels even extends beyond the Christmas season. The Book of Acts shows that many of the early Christians saw and/or heard angels. And The Book of Hebrews says angels can appear anytime: “Don’t neglect to show hospitality, for by doing this some have welcomed angels without knowing it.” Just think — someone who you or I encountered may have been an angel instead of a human being.

Personally, I am not aware of ever having seen or heard an angel. However, I know several people who have encountered angels. A friend was experiencing a health emergency and a stranger offered to drive her to the emergency room. He walked her into the crowded waiting room and up to the counter. She spoke to the nurse and then turned around to thank the gentleman, but he was gone. She said to the crowd: “Did anyone see where the man who came in with me went?” Several people replied: “You came in alone.”

I believe that the Christmas claim about angels is factual. And I believe that angels are still communicating to and interacting with humans.

The Claims Of Christmas — Virgin Birth

It is easy to overlook some of the remarkable claims of Christmas. One such claim is that a young woman named Mary gave birth to a child without having had sexual intercourse.

I have noticed that this amazing claim is generally responded to in two ways. 1) Many people reject it outright. 2) Most Christians blindly accept it without ever thinking much about it. However, Mary, herself, was astounded by the claim. When she first heard it she said: “How can this be since I have not been intimate with a man?” (Christian Standard Bible)

Mary asked a fair question. She and others at that time were well aware of where babies come from. They were not ignorant of the scientific fact of procreation, as some skeptics suppose. They knew that for a virgin to conceive was an impossibility in their time. (That was before artificial insemination.)

So Mary asked “How?” She was told that it would be a supernatural event — that God would by a miracle cause a baby to be conceived in her womb. But do supernatural events happen? That is another good question.

Personally I rejected the idea of a virgin birth when I was in high school. I could not conceive (excuse the pun) of how it could possibly happen, so I admitted to myself that I didn’t believe it. For me to believe something, I have to be convinced of its truth.

A couple of years later I had a supernatural experience that convinced me that Jesus Christ is alive and introduced me to a personal relationship with Him. Since that time the supernatural has become a frequent experience for me. God, a supernatural Being, who created human beings, would have no trouble creating a baby in the womb of a woman using supernatural means.

As I began to read the testimony of Mary and others in the New Testament, I realized that they were not reporting or creating myths. They were making the claim that the amazing miracles of Christmas had literally occurred.

Luke (author of the Book of Luke) even says: “Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us. It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, most honorable Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.”

The claim is that the miraculous events of Christmas actually happened in this space/time world. The Creator actually became a human being through a physical virgin birth.

Reading the claims of the New Testament writers, along with my personal experience of supernatural events, eventually convinced me that Mary did indeed conceive as a virgin. I believe the virgin birth of Christ is no myth, but that it really occurred as Mary and others declare in the Bible.

The virgin birth — what an amazing claim! That claim should not be taken lightly with an “O sure, I believe that.” It should be examined and explored and pondered and wrestled with. If it happened in space and time as the New Testament claims, then Christ deserves our total commitment and allegiance.

7 Names For 7 Days Around Thanksgiving (& 2 Oxymorons)

I don’t know who started naming the days around Thanksgiving Day.  However, this new tradition doesn’t seem complete.  Friday, Saturday, and Monday have names, but Sunday has been left out.  Also, it seems to me like a week’s worth of days should be named (just to make it an even 7).

So here are the names of the 7 days around Thanksgiving:

*  Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday

*  Thanksgiving Thursday

*  Black Friday

*  Small Business Saturday

*  Reason-For-The-Season Sunday

*  Cyber Monday

*  Giving Tuesday

2 Oxymorons–Did you notice that the introduction to this blog post contains, not one, but two oxymorons?  Yep.

1) new tradition

2) an even 7

A Name For The Sunday After Thanksgiving (And Words In The Night)

Someone is naming all the days after the day set aside to give thanks to God.  Let’s see, there’s Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.  But what about the Sunday after Thanksgiving Day?

I have a name for it.  Reason-For-The-Season Sunday.

Maybe we should act like the Shepherds that we read about in the Bible and in the Christmas carol, Silent Night, Holy Night.  “Shepherds quake at the sight (of the newborn Christ).”

“We know how people fall under great emotions of anger, grief, and joy.  Why?”  Because the influence of the mind has so affected the body that the body cannot bear it; and when the Holy Spirit of God comes into a human soul and opens his eyes, and quickens its perceptions, and enlarges its capacity, and swells it with glory, is it an unlikely or improbable thing that the body should sometimes be prostrated under His power”  —Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army

In the middle of the night, last night, the words “Shepherds quake at the sight,” came into my mind and then I remembered the above quotation from Catherine Booth. I heard “Post both on Facebook.”  But I thought to myself: “I don’t know where that quote is.” Immediately a book with a green cover popped into my mind.

When I woke up this morning I found the book with the green cover and got it off the shelf. I thought “I’ll never be able to find that quote.” (It is a thick book.) But then the thought came to my mind: “I’ll probably open the book and there will be the quote.”

I  opened the green book and the first thing that I saw was the above quotation. I sat in awe for awhile. How’d that all happen? It had to be God.

See how God works through ordinary people. Check out this book on Amazon.

Christmas Is About Judgment

Here’s a surprise: Christmas is about dealing with judgment. Our sinful thoughts, choices, and behaviors have been judged and we are guilty and condemned men and women. If our condemnation is merely canceled, the result would be chaos and injustice. Instead Christ came on Christ*mas, not to turn the judgment on our lives into tolerance, but to take the punishment for all of our individual sins upon Himself at the cross. We each owe a debt of judgment that we can never pay — Christ personally paid our debt through his suffering — He didn’t just overlook it. Now we are invited to accept the greatest gift of all — a beautiful package of repentance (turning away from our sins), forgiveness, and freedom from the bondage to sin.

So don’t just remember the babe this Christ*mas. Christ is no longer a babe. He grew up, defeated death, Hell, and the grave; paid the punishment for the wrongdoing of all humanity; and is still actively with us in the 21st Century, especially when we gather in His name (under His direct leadership and authority).

Gather with us at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center at 10:45 on Sundays at 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 as we turn the meeting over to Jesus and let Him lead and direct us without a man-made program. You will be amazed at what happens when Jesus is invited to take active control and direction of a gathering of His people. Come see!

How To Shop For Christ*mas

From Black Friday through Christmas Eve, people will be shopping for material things to give to family, friends, and clients on Christmas Day.  They will be searching and sorting through stuff, seeking to find just the right gifts.

But perhaps we should also shop for Christ*mas.  Maybe, during this shopping season, we should search and sort and seek what can help us love and live more like Christ.  If you would like a Christ-filled Christmas (a Christ*mas), here are some steps to shop for it.

* Shop for ways to love and serve others.  Be kind.  Share encouraging words.  Hold doors open for people.  Politely move aside to let others through the crowds.  Carry someone’s bags.  Give to The Salvation Army Red Kettles.  Volunteer with a nonprofit.  Help a neighbor.  Provide transportation for someone who doesn’t have a car.

* Shop for inspiration.  There is much in the media that is disrespectful and discouraging.  Don’t consume it.  Instead shop for, watch, and read what is uplifting and inspirational — what stirs your heart towards love, peace, joy, and God.  It is there, but you have to be a world class shopper to find it.  Here’s an inspirational movie jewel I found a couple of years ago:  Henry Poole Was Here.

* Shop for ways to grow spiritually.  We live in a world that is creating multitudes who are still-born spiritually — in an age where spiritual growth is extremely difficult.  It takes superb shopping skills to find and use the tools for spiritual growth — but they are available to those who really want them.  Examples:  various types of prayer, spiritual reading, solitude, spiritual listening, spiritual warfare, spiritual formation, detachment, meditation, devotional Bible reading, organic church, self-denial, humility, fasting, and other spiritual disciplines.  (Google one of these to start your spiritual shopping.)

* Shop for Christ-focused friends who follow and obey Jesus.  We become like the people we spend time with.  If we want to shop for Christ*mas, we must find friends who are not conformed to this world’s standards, but who are being transformed into people who live and love like Jesus.  Sort through your friends and hang out with the ones who are sold on living like Jesus.  If you don’t have any (or many) friends like that, become a super shopper and hunt down some passionate followers of Christ and begin to make friends with them.

If you will shop for Christ*mas with the same effort most Americans shop for Christmas, you will be amazed at how your life will be transformed.  Why not make your shopping season Christ-centered this year?
