Ekklesia will train & release William Booth’s reckless spiritual warriors

Did William Booth foresee a time of ekklesia in the future of The Salvation Army? I believe that he did and that the time is now!

058

I just read William Booth’s 1904 dream about the “Companions of the Cross of Christ” (in the Journal of Aggressive Christianity at this link), who Booth saw coming forth in the future of The Salvation Army as a “reckless, daredevil set” and wandering around boldly proclaiming the Gospel everywhere they go. Wow! I’m so inspired and encouraged by that!

My wife and I have also been dreaming for years about a release of spiritual warriors in and through The Salvation Army. God brought us into the Army as outsiders and opened the door for us to start a nontraditional corps. One of our first soldiers, who had never before been a part of The Salvation Army, shared with us that 20+ years earlier, God told her that she is going to be a part of a “reformation” in The Salvation Army.

For eight years we have been exploring the Greek New Testament concept of  ekklesia (a Spirit-led, unprogrammed, participatory worship gathering). We have discovered that it is a powerful way to raise up those “reckless” warriors who Booth saw, and release them on society for such a time as this!

Booth described the future spiritual warriors that he saw, saying, “they appeared to manifest extraordinary signs of earnestness and singleness of purpose; indeed, they had every appearance of being a reckless, daredevil set.” He said: “Do not limit the possibilities of the future . . . It seemed all so natural, so possible, so fruitful, and the results so desirable, that I came almost to feel that the thing was not a dream, but an actual occurrence literally happening before my eyes. I thought I was looking at The Salvation Army in its varied future operations.”

William Booth goes on to say: “They were talking, praying, and singing with whomsoever they could get to listen to them; singly, or in company wherever they came. And as I looked, I saw their number, which was very, very small at first, gradually increase until they reached quite a multitude. And the educated and well-to-do, charmed with this simple Christ-like life, swelled its numbers, coming from the universities and the moneymaking institutions and other high places . . . having all the time what was above all and beyond all in worth and desirability — the abundant smile of God, and a great harvest of precious souls.”

Jesus said in Matthew 16: “On this rock (spiritual revelation) I will build My ekklesia (usually mistranslated as “church”) and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Ekklesia literally means “called out ones” and it was the name of the city council in ancient Greek city-states.

When everyday people come together, listen to the living Jesus, and then do what He tells them to, the “called out ones” learn in a safe, loving environment how to hear Jesus. They get to practice obeying His voice through applying the many New Testament “one another” commands in the meeting. As they do, their confidence in the actual power and presence of risen Jesus working in and through their individual lives, grows stronger and stronger. Soon their growing passion and boldness for Christ cannot be contained in a meeting, so they spill out into everyday life knocking down the gates of hell as they go.

I believe that’s what William Booth saw.  God is ready to raise up and release multitudes of mighty men and women of God in the 21st Century. The only question is: Are we willing to break out of our programming and surrender our holiness meetings to the literal control of the living, resurrected Jesus? If we don’t learn to totally depend on the living Jesus to personally run a holiness meeting without inserting our program and agenda, how will we have the faith to totally depend on Him in other areas?

Here’s the formula for ekklesia:  >1 + tlJ – p = e (Two or more plus the living Jesus minus programming equals ekklesia).

William Booth stood for the priesthood of all believers: “I deny the existence of any order possessing the right to publish the salvation of God . . . I honor the Order of Preachers myself . . but as to his possessing any particular grace because of his having gone through Ordination, or any other ceremonial whatever, I think that idea is a great mistake. And I want to say here, once and for all, that no such notion is taught in any authorized Salvation Army doctrine or affirmed by any responsible officer in the organisation.” –William Booth in The Officer in 1899

One note don’t make a song . . .

keyboard

You don’t have a song when only one note on a keyboard is repeated over and over and all the other notes are kept silent. You have no tune, no melody, no harmony — nothing but a monotone.
–So how can we have Spirit-led unity as the body of Christ when only one person does all the talking and all the other people present are kept quiet? Wouldn’t that be a monomeeting — out of tune with the Spirit’s melody and lacking holy harmony?
–The Bible says that when Christ-followers come together, everyone present has something to share. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26 and/or this link.)

God is too big for one person to proclaim! Everybody in a worship meeting needs to be free to show and tell what God has done!

“I think biblically, it comes through pretty clearly that we’re all priests and we don’t need a mediator. God is too big for one person. We need everyone in full access to God.” – Quote from Church Refugees by Josh Packard

Which formula rings true to you?

God formula

God + nothing = everything. G0d took nothing  (0) and made it everything! This formula makes so much more sense to my mind (and my heart) than the formula behind our contemporary secular society: Time + nothing = everything. Which formula rings true to you?

If time + nothing = everything, then there is no meaning or purpose in life. Love, justice, integrity, honor, truth, compassion, and all other intangible qualities are merely feelings that evolved in the human brain over time.

Funny thing, however, even ardent proclaimers of time + nothing = everything, don’t live their lives like it is true. Instead they love their families, seek honor from people, and cry out for justice if they feel they have been wronged. A great example of this contradictory lifestyle is atheist Stephen Hawking.

So do those who believe God + nothing = everything, live like it is true? Unfortunately we often don’t. Instead we act like the Creator who we say we believe in, can’t say or do anything without a preacher talking in a pulpit.

We shift the focus away form the Creator and put it on a man we call a pastor. A pulpit, is a platform for the same preacher to proclaim his personal perspective of God and Scripture week after week. However, faith is an individual, not a group-think experience. God speaks to all of us individually and shows each person unique insights from the Bible. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear from several people, instead of just one? The Bible actually tells us that when we meet together to worship, everybody present has something to share. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26 and/or this link.)

Faces shining with Christ

angel faces
Is Church Missing Angelic Faces?
The backs of people’s heads are really boring,
But faces lit up by God are spiritually soaring.
So why does church sit people facing forward in perfect rows
And weekly have the same man show how much he knows?
When people pour out their heart in worship their face glows;
And their love for Jesus shows as plain as their nose.
But you can’t see angelic faces if you’re lined up in rows.
Looking at the back of people’s heads, you might as well doze,
But faces aglow with God’s love show that Christ truly rose.
“And all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.” –Acts 6:15 (NKJ)
–I grew up seeing the backs of people’s heads in church — lots of hair and some baldness; not much more. Then one day I walked into a meeting in the lobby of a dorm and saw a few dozen faces sitting around the room and loving on the living Jesus. Christ became real to me that day and I’ve been passionately in love with Him ever since. That’s the power of seeing faces aglow with the presence of the risen Jesus.
–There’s nothing like seeing Jesus in people’s faces. We miss out on seeing Him when we set up church so that you can’t see angelic faces of ordinary people reflecting Christ. That’s why we set up chairs in a U-shape at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee and then let everyday people show and tell what God has done. The love and joy on their faces transform those who see. Come experience this for yourself every Sunday morning at 10:45, 225 Berry St., 37207. And read more about it in the book Beyond Church available at this link.

Why put Jesus in a box?

Jesus in a box

Jesus is no Jack-in-the-box, alive one day and in the tomb the next. He’s not supposed to be preached about on Sunday and then shut up in a box for the rest of the week. Religion tries to turn a crank and keep Christ contained in a coffin, because when the living Jesus is on the loose, He stirs up a lot of stuff. Ekklesia, however, lets the risen Jesus crank things up! (More about ekklesia @  http://amzn.to/1ogjujR)

One way to let Jesus out of the box is to realize that preaching is for ordinary people, not just for pastors. Here’s Bible to back up that statement:
Acts 8:1 says: “A great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered.” Then verse 4 says: “Those who had been scattered (everybody but the apostles) preached the word wherever they went.”

“Risen” is Jesus’ permanent status!
–Allow the risen Jesus to freely post on the tmeline of your heart. Love and obey His posts. He’s the Friend who will never unfriend you. Don’t unfriend Him or block Him from your page.
–Join the group that Jesus started. He’s the Head of that group. He said in the Greek New Testament, “I will build My ekklesia,” and His followers are the “living stones” He builds with.
–Jesus is the administrator of His ekklesia and He allows anyone of His followers to post on His group page. The Bible says that in Jesus’ group — His ekklesia — “each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation.” (See 1 Corinthians 14:26.)

So is the risen Christ great enough to run a church service all by Himself?
–Billy Graham said: “This risen Christ, taken by faith in all of His power and glory, is great enough and big enough to cope with every problem the human race faces at this hour.”
–If that’s true, then surely the risen Jesus is “great enough and big enough” to run a church service without a preacher or a program controlling all that happens!

Church causes people to be dependent on the words of a preacher.
–Ekklesia releases people to depend on the living, risen Jesus speaking directly to them. Experience ekklesia for yourself every Sunday morning at 10:45 at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 — where ordinary people show and tell what God has done!

I love how the Holy Spirit gets people on the same page. Scott Strissel  posted a similar article today at this link. Check it out.

What’s “good” about “Good Friday”?

Easter SA

What’s “good” about “Good Friday”?
–Between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, Jesus was dead for hours. Now He’s alive forever!
–Christ died on “Good Friday” to make a way for us to move beyond our guilt and shame by being reconciled to God and others. Christ lives so that we can allow Him to live His life, in and through us — prompting, animating, and empowering us from within so that we can live joyously, lovingly, purely, and victoriously.

Jesus’ death on “Good Friday graciously paid our debt of sin; tore the vale in the ancient Jewish temple; and opened the way for us to enter God’s holy presence. His resurrection led to the release of the Holy Spirit to live in and through human beings who humbly turn away from their own will and then seek to follow and obey the living, resurrected Jesus.
–Christ’s ekklesia allows people to follow the risen Jesus, not just as individuals, but as a gathered body of believers; demonstrating His power and presence to all who enter.

In the midst of violence, meanness, and evil this world needs a release of the power and presence of the living, resurrected Jesus. It takes more than Sunday messages to do that. It takes ekklesia — the lost word of the Bible. We don’t need just theologically astute church members. We need courageous Christ-followers overflowing with the love and power of the risen Jesus!

Jesus said that He is present with us when we gather in His name.
Religion talks about Jesus like He’s not in the room.
Ekklesia lets ordinary people listen to and obey the living Jesus.

Atheism strives to deny God.
Secularism seeks to ignore God.
Religion tries to control and contain God.
Christ came to release intimacy with God.

“Our common way of seeing the church today contains, conforms and controls God’s people.” –Neil Cole
–Perhaps it is time we go beyond church as usual and into ekklesia!

Ekklesia let’s the risen Jesus take the wheel!

Who is most effective at steering a meeting of Christ-followers? A human leader? Or the living, risen Jesus?  If a pastor surrenders steering “Sunday services” to the Spirit, the living Jesus takes the wheel and ekklesia breaks out! http://amzn.to/1VDSxUR

How well has the concept of one man steering Sunday morning church done in presenting Christianity in the past 64 years? I just heard these stats on PBS. In 1952 only 2% of Americans considered themselves to be nonbelievers in God or in any religion. Today more than 25% of Americans say they are nonbelievers. Those statistics seem to indicate that what church is doing isn’t working.

So many people have been hurt by church. But when church has hurt, ekklesia will heal!

You can see God! How? “He (Moses) persevered because he saw Him who is invisible.” –Hebrews 11:27

You can see the invisible God like you see the wind moving the leaves. Given the right environment, you can see God moving in and through ordinary people. The Greek New Testament calls that environment “ekklesia.” In ekklesia, everyday people respond to the wind of the Spirit the way that leaves respond to natural wind. As people obey the prompting of the Spirit, you can literally see the invisible God directing their words and actions! It’s an amazing thing to experience. More at http://amzn.to/1U4FJau

Christ’s ekklesia is His embassy on earth. In the New Testament Greek, Jesus is quoted as saying “I will build My ekklesia.” Ekklesia was the name for the city-council in ancient Greek city-states. So what Jesus really said was: “I will build My city council — My embassy on earth.” Perhaps we need to let Him personally take the wheel when we gather in His name and allow Him to steer us in earth’s foreign environment.

Everyday Easter!

Happy Resurrection Day! Christ the Lord is risen today (not just on a spring holiday with a funny name).

resurrection day

Everyday people can experience Easter every time they meet to worship the living, resurrected Jesus. It’s called ekkesia — http://amzn.to/1U0U73r. Jesus promised to be present whenever two or three of His followers get together in His name.

Would you rather hear someone preach a sermon about the benefits of this year’s NCAA Tournament or would you rather watch it for yourself? Then why settle for an Easter sermon when you can listen to the risen Jesus for yourself?

Easter and March Madness — it’s not enough to hear a nice talk about them. You need to personally experience them! Jesus is not risen 1 day per year — He’s risen 24/7/366 this year!

If we would put as much trust, passion, and commitment in the living, risen Jesus as we do in sporting events and political candidates, we would see our lives, our families, and our communities transformed!

Perhaps it is time to go beyond Holy Week to wholly weak. Holy Week takes a healthy and inspirational look back at the events leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, however, being wholly weak opens us up to personally experience the risen Christ today! When you are wholly week, the living Jesus can be strong in and through you. Perhaps instead of trying to hide and/or avoid our weakness, we should embrace it and allow it to drive us to the feet of Jesus. Apostle Paul said: “Where I am weak I am strong.” Will you humble yourself, acknowledge your weakness, surrender your life to Jesus’ presence, and daily follow and obey His voice? If so, you will have a happy Resurrection Day every day!

Christ Release Centers release the living Jesus through testimonies

A Christ Release Center (CRC) lets the living Jesus flow through many people, not just one person! It brings Christ out of concealment and into God’s community by allowing ordinary people to testify — to show and tell what God has done. Thus a Christ Release Center is a spiritual armory that trains everyday people in spiritual warfare through the hands on experience of giving and hearing testimonies.

Christ-followers are the most well armed people on earth because they’re packing Jesus. They carry the living, risen Christ in the holster of their heart. A Christ Release Center allows ordinary people to take out their spiritual weapon and openly testify to power and love of Jesus as they are prompted by the Holy Spirit. Their testimonies become contagious releasing the presence of Christ through anointed Scriptures, prayer request, gifts of the Spirit, short teaching, prayers, etc. into the meeting.

In the book, Release The Power Of Jesus, Bill Johnson says that testimony is “catalytic is its ability to bring about a change of atmosphere in the present, making room for a supernatural release.”

testimony3

Donald G. Bloesch wrote in 1968: “The local church should ideally be a lighthouse in a dark world, but where this does not in fact take place, then new lighthouses should arise, perhaps apart from the organizational machinery of the church.”

A Christ Release Center is a “new lighthouse” that frees people “from the organizational machinery of the church” and allows them the freedom to openly testify as the Holy Spirit moves them. It is based on the Greek New Testament concept of “ekklesia” in 1 Corinthians 14:26 (learn more here).

In a Christ Release Center, testimonies are not random. They are prompted by the living, risen Jesus. He is the one who runs and controls the meeting (not a preacher).

So why won’t we let Jesus run the meeting when we gather in His name?
1) We don’t believe that He is really present with us;
2) We’re afraid of what He will do if we give the meeting to Him;
3) It’s easier to just let a preacher control the meeting;
4) We’ve never seen it done before;
5) We don’t want to change;
6) We’ve always had a man run things from the front of the room.
(Any other answers?)

Experience a Christ Release Center in Nashville every Sunday morning at 10:45 at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., 37207.

Our wrong-gong can “make America great again.”

gongTo “make America great again” requires a return to the high ideals of our national creeds: “Liberty and justice for all,” “All men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights,” “In God we trust,” and the Bill of Rights. Those creeds have served as a national conscience. Although as a nation and as individuals we have often ignored them, they have been a wrong-gong ringing out where and when we have gong wrong and calling us back to justice and morality.

Has our wrong-gong gone wrong? Has our conscience been twisted?  Several generations have been trained to ignore it by the slogan; “If it feels good do it.”

Rather than our national creeds, present day society presents a formula that produces meaninglessness and despair. “Nothing + time = everything,” says that nothing is either right or wrong. Therefore many people today demand their rights and then ignore the most important right of all — the right too obey their conscious and live right with God!

However, Jesus presents a different formula that releases meaning and hope. “Love + forgiveness = transformation,” says that wrong exists, but we can find freedom from it.

A nation whose people are not hungry for God will look to politicians, government, and armies to do what only God and righteousness can do. And that’s a very dangerous situation.

How can America be great again? We need to begin to listen to our individual and national wrong-gong and obey our conscience!
