Last night I was on YouTube and came across “Iraq Veterans Against The War.” I was shocked and saddened to tears by what I heard as young Americans shared stories of atrocities they had committed against innocent civilians in Iraq. Here’s a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akm3nYN8aG8
After watching three or four of those heart-rending videos, I went to my TV, hoping to relax and came across Bill Moyers on PBS. His topic was “Torturing Democracy” — http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/05292009/profile2.html It was also shocking and sad as it quoted details from newly released documents about how America tortured prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.
All Americans need to look at these links . . .
A key to a Christian spiritual awakening (revival) in the 21st Century:
No lording over others. Christian leaders are servants, not bosses. Their job is to help release the living Word of God in and through other believers, and not to be the only ones who are allowed to speak in church meetings. Bring forth the voices of all of God’s people. No one need be silent when there is such glorious news to tell!
Experience a church meeting where everyone is allowed to show and tell what God is doing in their lives, at The Salvation Army Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee: Sun. mornings @ 10:45 and/or Thurs. nights @ 6:30 — 225 Berry Street, 37207.
One of the greatest Christian spiritual awakenings in history began in Wales in 1904 and shook the world. It was based on what became known as “The Four Points,” originally taught by Evan Roberts and became known as the Welsh Revival.
1) All sin must be confessed to God and be repented of. Read my recent post: Are You Living With Blood-Sucking Leeches.
2) There must be no unforgiveness. See: When Somebody’s Done You Wrong — 3 Responses
3) Believers must obey the Holy Spirit. Check out: In This Busy World, Perhaps We Need To SLO Down
4) Believers must openly talk about their love for and relationship with Christ. Read: Open Participatory Church In The Early Days Of The Salvation Army.
Perhaps these four points would bring a move of God in the 21st Century, if we would only obey them.
Although I just discovered “The Four Points” as I was reading a book this morning, we have been trying to live by them for the past four years at The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207. Sunday mornings @ 10:45 & Thursday nights @ 6:30. God is moving. Come and see for yourself.
Last night I was in a home group of 9 adults (who I don’t know very well) who met to share, sing, support one another, and pray as led by the Spirit. As someone was praying an image came into my mind.
I saw a pair of hands tearing up several pieces of paper into shreds and then throwing the shreds into the air like confetti. Then these words, based on a Scripture, came to my mind: “I have torn up the handwriting of ordinances that was against you.”
As I told the group what I heard and saw, one woman was sitting with her Bible open while I shared. She said: “I am reading that Scripture right now.”
Then she read this section to us: “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has He made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses;blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.”
What are the odds against me having a Bible verse come to mind while someone (in a house church of 9) is silently reading the very same verse? Was this supernatural — a miracle?
God wants you to know: You can be forgiven (and relieved of the guilt you carry) through the Cross of Christ, if you will turn away from your sins and begin to daily follow and obey Jesus.
A man saw a guy with leeches on his neck and said to him: “Hey, you’ve got leeches on your neck and need to get them off.”
The guy with the bloodsucking leeches snapped back: “Who are you to criticize me for having leeches — you should approve of my leeches?”
“I’m just trying to help,” said the first man.
The second guy shot back: “Yeah, yeah, that’s what all narrow-minded people say when they are judging people.”
Perhaps all people have leeches — attitudes and/or behaviors that are sucking the life out of us. Maybe instead of being so defensive and negative towards the people in our lives who love us enough to point out our harmful habits and destructive attitudes; we should thank them for bringing our leeches to our attention and begin to pull our sins out of our life.
To quote Charles Spurgeon: “It does not spoil your happiness to confess your sin. The unhappiness is in not making the confession.” –
Church (although many polls have shown it to be in decline in America) still has quite the presence in the Bible Belt where church buildings abound on prominent real estate. However, if you try hard, you can avoid religious buildings and meetings (even in the Bible Belt).
However, the invisible church, is a bit more pervasive. It’s almost everywhere.
Church is the life of God present and actively working in the people of God. It is 24/7/365. You can’t compartmentalize real church and/or turn it off when you’re not in a religious building.
Are you fully embracing your “church” experience of this present moment?
Unrestrained desire can dominate and defeat you. Cravings can capture and control your life.
Yet our society teaches us to surrender to desires, cravings, compulsions, and whims: “If you feel like doing something, go for it, and don’t listen to anybody’s concerns but your own.” “If it feels good, do it.”
This advice (and/or brainwashing), however, is a trap that gets millions of people caught in the cage of obsession — stuck in the sink of self.
There is a better way to live than the way of wimping out to the control of our cravings. This better way has been ignored, forgotten, and/or disdained by our present day culture — the way of personal restraint, self-control, and victory over the domination of desire.
Here are some quotes to help answer this question: Are you an inner wimp or an inner winner?
“Self-control is not for the timid. The only successful attitude toward out-of-control desire is a declaration of all-out war.” –Ed Welch
“A man who governs his passions is master of the world. We must either command them or be enslaved to them.” –Dominic
“Self-will leads so many people to self-destruction.” –Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt
“There was never a man so empty as the one who is full of himself.” –T.J. Bach
“Do not let your body do exactly what it wants, or your brain either. Assert your power of command over body and mind. This discipline will grow to be a habit.” –White Eagle
“There is a violent streak in the true Christian life! It is a violence against all the impulses in our own selves that would make peace with our own sin and settle in with a peacetime mentality. It is a violence against all lust in ourselves and all enslaving desires.” –John Piper
“Multitudes think they like to do evil, yet no man ever really enjoyed doing evil since God made the world.” –John Ruskin
