What’s More Exciting Than March Madness?

If you think that the Kentucky & Louisville and the Ohio State & Kansas games in this year’s college basketball Final Four are going to be exciting tomorrow night, here’s some great news for you.

Church can be even more exciting than March Madness when the Holy Spirit is allowed to take over.  I know that traditionally exciting is seldom used to describe church (boring, however has been frequently used for church).

Perhaps that’s because most people have never experienced a participatory church meeting, where everyday people, rather than passively sitting, are allowed to openly show and tell what God has done.  In this type of church gathering, God’s Holy Spirit takes over and amazing, life-transforming things begin to happen right in front of your eyes.  It is more exciting than the best that the NCAA, the NBA, the NFL, the NHL, the Olympics, and every other sporting event combined have to offer.  Whew!  Now that’s exciting.

Need an example?  If you have ever wondered what motivates Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow and why their faith is more important to them than their sport, it is personally experiencing the living Jesus Christ.  (Jeremy Lin even wears a bracelet that reads:  “In Jesus’ Name I Play.”)

Don’t take my word for it.  Come and see for yourself.  Experience Spirit-led, participatory church at:  The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center, 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee, 37207.  Gatherings:  Participatory Bible study on Sunday mornings @ 9:30 —– Open sharing and testimony worship meeting on Sunday mornings @ 10:45; and Spirit-led prayer meeting on Thursday nights @ 6:30.

What is church? 1) A place where people passively sit in chairs? Or 2) A gathering where everyone shares? (See the Bible’s answer @ I Corinthians 14:26.)

Here’s a one question quiz:  What is church?

1) A place where people passively sit in chairs? Or

2) A gathering where everyone shares? (See the Bible’s answer @ I Corinthians 14:26.)

I want to be a Christianitypreneur (I made that word up.)  I googled and found two similar words:  Christpreneur and Christianpreneur, but I didn’t find my new word.

Christianitypreneur means to develop a fresh approach to church, a creative way to worship.  I want to discover, demonstrate, and disperse creative ways to let the Holy Spirit, in all of His Divine freshness, be in actual control of a Christian worship meeting — where human control, programs, and agendas are set aside so that the risen, present Christ can, Himself, take charge and run things His way.

We’ve been working on this for 4 years at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center in Nashville.  It is definitely a non-traditional approach to a Christian worship meeting.  There is no sermon.  Instead people are invited to share Scriptures, testimonies, words of instruction, encouragement, prayers, and one-to-one ministry.

The results so far have been truly amazing.  Lives are changing in front of our eyes.  If you would like to experience a little Christianityprenuering, come visit:  Sunday mornings at 10:45 and Thursday nights at 6:30.    You’ll be glad you did.  We are located at 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.

How To Avoid Being A Spiritual Wimp (Top 10 Ways To Grow Strong In The Lord)

In today’s tremendously tempting environment, it is important not to be a spiritual wimp.  Maintaining a consistent walk with the Lord requires great spiritual strength.

Here are my Top Ten Ways To Grow Strong In The Lord.  However, because this Top Ten is very difficult to rank, I’m not going to put them in any particular order.

*  Begin to obey your conscience.  God has given you an inner guide.  Use it.  Don’t ignore the voice of your conscience.  Anybody can do that.  However it takes great guts to obey your conscience rather than society.  Be a woman or man of valor who thinks, says, and does the right things; not the popular, easy, or convenient things.

*  In a kind, loving way, openly live, demonstrate, and talk about your faith.  Every chance you get, testify about what Jesus has done (and is doing) in your life.  (Tim Tebow is a great example of this one as the NFL’s New York Jets and their fans will soon find out.)

* Hang out with people who love Jesus and obey Him more than you do.  Spend as much time as possible with them.  Be open and honest with them about your struggles. Gradually, you will become like the people you choose to hang around.

*  Avoid temptation.  Don’t watch or read anything that causes temptation to rise up in you.  Don’t hang around people who tempt you.  When you find yourself in a tempting situation, run away from it as quickly as possible.  Be the missionary rather than the mission field.  Rather than allowing people to tempt you to sin; by your words and behaviors tempt them to fall in love with and obey Jesus Christ.

*  When you fall, have the courage to get right up.  When you sin, stop.  Immediately ask God to forgive you.  Also ask whoever you have offended to forgive you.  Receive God’s forgiveness.  Refuse to wallow in guilt and condemnation.  Then obey Jesus’ words:  “Go and sin no more.”

*  Read the Bible, especially the New Testament, at least 5 minutes every single day.  Do it until it becomes an automatic daily thing.  Read it with an open heart more than with an inquisitive mind.  Let the Word go deeply into your heart and convict you of where you need to change.  Let it inspire you to grow closer to God.  Obey what God tells you to do as you read the Bible.

*  Seek out and spend time with broken, humble, disenfranchised people — the poor, the discouraged, the depressed, the rejected, the neglected.  Love them, serve them, encourage them, share with them, embrace them as equals, openly share your love for Jesus with them, let them help you, build strong, mutual friendships with them.

*  Pray with people, not just for them.  Do this every chance you get.  When someone tells you about a problem or a need that they have, ask:  “May I pray with you.”  (Most people will say yes, however, if they say no, that’s no problem; just tell them that if they ever want prayer you will be happy to pray with them.)  If they say yes, bow your head and begin to talk to God and ask Him to help the person.  (I usually hold their hands.)  Words will flow from your heart and both you and her/him will be touched by the real presence of God’s Spirit.

*  Receive the ability to pray in God’s supernatural languages.  The Bible calls this “speaking in tongues.”  It is an amazing and life-transforming spiritual experience.  It is described in Acts chapters 2, 10, & 19 and also in I Corinthians chapter 14.  When I pray in tongues, I am immediately filled with awe as I sense the power and Presence of Jesus.  Once you receive this ability, use it through out the day, everyday.

*  Learn to hear God’s voice.  Listen to what He speaks to you.  Jesus said:  “My sheep hear My voice.”  If you are a genuine believer, you can hear Jesus talk directly to you.  Pay close attention to what He tells you.  Receive His comforting words to you.  Courageously obey His instructions.  Even let Him tell you things about yourself that you would rather not hear.

Here’s a great quote from Paul of Tarsus:  “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”

3 Bonus ways:

*  Continually repeat this ancient prayer (known as The Jesus Prayer) in your mind and out loud:  “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

*  Fast.  Spend time not eating food to focus on praying, seeking God, and hearing His voice.  A fast can be for part of a day, a day, several days, or even a week or more.

*  Get involved in a church that offers active involvement more than passive listening.  When you listen to someone else talk about the Lord you tend to forget most of what you hear, however, when you, yourself, begin to talk and share about the Lord, you begin to grow strong.  There is a Nashville church that meets based on open sharing and participation — The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center.  Check it out:  Sunday Participatory Bible Study @ 9:30 am. — Sunday Sharing & Testimony Meeting @ 10:45 am. — Thursday Night Spirit-Led Prayer Meeting @ 6:30 pm — 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.

Sometimes I Think I’m Very Wealthy

A few days ago I began to realize how wealthy I am.  However, it is not a wealth that Forbes magazine will recognize.

Nevertheless, if the world’s billionaires knew how much peace, contentment, excitement, clear conscience, joy, and sweet, moment-by-moment companionship with God that I have, I think that they would be knocking on my door and offering me most of their money to experience the same.

Still, I can’t imagine anything that I could ever buy, even with seemingly unlimited cash, (glamorous trips, cars, houses, jewels, land, planes, yachts, etc.) that could in any way compare with the deep, abiding, long-term excitement and pleasure that I find in daily seeking to follow and obey Jesus.

The Top Ten Boldest Quotations From The Book Of Acts

Would you like to read some really bold statements?  The Book of Acts is full of them.  After reading through Acts 6 times in 3 months, I have picked out my The Top Ten Boldest Quotations From The Book Of Acts:

1)  “You stiff-necked people!  Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised.  You are just like your ancestors:  You always resist the Holy Spirit . . . you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”  –Stephen

2)  “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money.  You have no part or share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God.  Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that He may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.  For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”  –Peter

3)  “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.  For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed.  He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”  –Paul of Tarsus

4)  “Which is right in God’s eyes:  to listen to you or to Him?  You be the judges!  As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”  –Peter and John

5)  “The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.  ‘We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,’ he said.  ‘Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”  Peter and the other apostles replied:  ‘We must obey God rather than human beings.'”  Dr. Luke

6)  “I preached they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.”  –Paul of Tarsus

7)  “He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.  As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid.”  –Dr. Luke

9)  “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”  –Paul of Tarsus

9)  “With many other words he warned them ; and he pleaded with them, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.'”  –Dr. Luke

10)  “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give to you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”  –Peter

I Found A Book That Describes Nashville’s Berry Street Church

I “stumbled upon” a book in a used book store called The Rabbit And The Elephant.  It is written by Tony and Felicity Dale and George Barna.

As I began to read the book, I was amazed.  It perfectly describes our meetings at The Salvation Army Berry Street even though the authors have never been to Berry Street and no one at Berry Street has ever read there book before.

Here are some quotes:

“We frequently experience the Holy Spirit orchestrating the meeting in extraordinary ways.”

“Since God is creative, we’ve come to expect variety in our meetings; gifts of the Spirit such as prophecy, prayer, scriptural insights, and visions.  And we’ve learned not to be concerned about making mistakes.  In a sense, each gathering is a workshop, and the best way to learn is to risk making mistakes.”

“Sometimes people wonder how the Holy Spirit leads in a time together.  We’ve found that if we fully participate in what is going on, the things that come to mind spontaneously are most likely from the Holy Spirit.  For example, if someone is praising God through prayer, you might find a verse of Scripture or a song comes to mind.  Chances are that thought was the Holy Spirit, and it’s something you should share with the group.

“We sometimes ask a person requesting prayer to sit on the ‘hot seat’ while others lay hands on that person and pray for the need.  Someone might share prophetic words or pictures, and someone else might share a verse of Scripture.  We’ve found this kind of prayer to be life changing!”

“At other times we break into smaller groups of three to four for prayer.  In this way we make sure that everyone in the group can easily take an active part in the praying.”

They also describe our participatory Bible study:  “Everyone’s opinions are valued and there is no such thing as a wrong answer.  When someone shares something bizarre, the facilitator might say, ‘That’s an interesting point.  I’ve never heard anyone express it that way before.  What does anyone else think?'”

And they even describe our neighborhood prayer walks:  “Often they walk the streets where they sense Jesus is sending them, praying for the people who live there.  They pray blessing on those people and on the city and its services.  They repent for the sins of they area  They identify the problems of the area and pray against the spiritual powers of darkness behind them.  Prayer like this will open up an area for the gospel.”

What’s the purpose of a church meeting? According to the New Testament the goal of a church meeting is not to listen to a featured preacher, but to bring together a group of hungry seekers who support, challenge, and share God’s love with one another. (See I Corinthians 14:26)

Experience I Corinthians 14 26 in action (“26What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation.”) at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center, 225 Berry St., Nashville, TN 37207 — Sunday mornings at 10:45 and Thursday nights at 6:30.

The Power Of Hearing Your Name

Sometimes I tell God; “Lord, I love you,” and then I hear these words in my spirit; “I love you, Steve Simms.”  Am I crazy?  Not according to the Bible.

Four different people, in chapters 9 & 10 of the Book of Acts, hear God call them by name.  It starts with an angry man who hates Christians and even has them killed.  He is on his way to Damascus, Syria to persecute the believers there when suddenly he hears his name:  “Saul, Saul why so you persecute Me?”  Saul asks the voice, “Who are you, Lord?” and gets this reply.  “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.”  Saul is transformed from persecuter to proclaimer of Jesus.

Three days later, a believer in Damascus hears his name.  “Ananias!  Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.  In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”  Ananias, though fearful for his life, courageously obeys God and goes to see Saul the great persecuter finding him now to be a passionate believer in Christ.

Saul and Ananias were both Jewish.  Next a non-Jewish, Roman hears his name.  “Cornelius!  Your prayers have gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.  Now send men to Joppa and bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.”

God prepares the way for the messengers from Cornelius by giving Peter a vision of unclean animals and then speaking to him:  “Get up, Peter.  Kill and eat.  Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”  Because of the voice of God, Peter breaks religious tradition and goes and eats with Cornelius and his family & friends.  Suddenly the Holy Spirit falls on them in power and glory.

Here is one more example from the Bible.  Mary Magdalene, a former prostitute, goes to Jesus’ tomb and finds it empty.  She sees someone who she thinks is the gardener and asks:  “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him and I will get Him.”  The supposed gardener says:  “Mary.”  Suddenly Mary realizes that the Man talking to her is the resurrected Jesus!

Are you angry and hateful like Saul?  Afraid like Ananias?  Seeking God like Cornelius?  Prejudice and religious like Peter?  Or broken and confused like Mary?

God is calling you by name.  Listen!  He says:  “Be still and know that I am God.”

Hear that one word — your name spoken by the living God!

Come hear!  God is speaking to people in Nashville at The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center,  225 Berry St., 37207 — Sunday mornings @ 10:45 & Thursday nights @ 6:30.
