I Saw Lincoln (You Should Too!)

I saw Abraham Lincoln, not in person, of course, but in the new movie, Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg and staring Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln.  I was expecting a drama about the life of Lincoln, but this was not that.

Lincoln is rather the story about the fight to get the 13th Constitutional Amendment that made slavery illegal in the United States, passed by the House of Representatives near the end of the Civil War.  The amendment had already been passed by the Senate, but the House had resisted.

Lincoln was convinced that if the amendment didn’t pass and get approved by the states, that slavery would remain in America.  So Lincoln used every tool that he could in an effort to persuade enough Democrats to vote with the Republicans (who favored the amendment) to get a two-thirds majority.

This movie also includes two of my Top Ten Greatest Americans — Representative Thaddeus Stevens and Senator Charles Sumner, two men who boldly and courageously stood against the prevailing racists views of the time and tirelessly spoke out for not only ending slavery, but also for “liberty and justice (and equal rights) for all.’  They were the political leaders of the abolitionist movement with the goal to end slavery and to insure equal rights for African Americans.

Even Abraham Lincoln didn’t go that far.  He wanted slavery ended, but resisted the idea equal rights for blacks.  Lincoln preferred colonization (sending blacks back to Africa).

Looking back, it is obvious that Stevens and Sumner were in the right.  How did the people of the time period, hold so strongly to the racist idea that blacks were subhuman and that it was alright to cruelly mistreat and abuse them?  And how did a very few people (like Stevens and Sumner) have the courage to oppose the majority of Americans?

Lincoln will touch your heart, make you think, and teach you some very important American history.  Go see it if you can.

Who Will Carry Me When I Feel Like I Can’t Go On?

Who will carry me when I am so weary and/or discouraged that I feel like I can’t go on?  There is Someone who comes as an inner flow — the Holy Spirit.

“‘Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’  By this He (Jesus) meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive.”  (John 7:38-39)

There is an incredible inner flow of the Holy Spirit and power available to those who follow and obey Jesus.  This is not just a Bible story, but a living, 21st Century reality.

I depend daily on the Holy Spirit’s flowing out of me.  I think I would self-destruct without Him.

When you read the Book of Acts in the New Testament portion of the Bible, you see that the early Christ followers experienced a word flow of the Holy Spirit — the out-flowing in prayer of words that they didn’t know.  (See Acts 2:4, 9:44-46, and 19:6 where this is called “speaking in tongues“)

Apostle Paul teaches about this in 1 Corinthians chapter 14.  He says that the purpose of speaking in tongues is to strengthen (“edify”) individual believers and that it is normally intended to be used privately (or quietly) and only for public attention if it is going to be translated into the common language so that everybody can understand it.

Paul writes:  “If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.  So what shall I do?  I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding.”  He also says (speaking of His personal, not public, use of tongues):  “I thank my God I speak in tongues more than all of you.” (1 Corinthians 14:14-19)

Perhaps speaking in tongues was a key to Paul’s power as a follower of Christ.  I know that speaking in tongues keeps passionate love for Christ in my heart.

So how does it work?  Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift.  And it works like a water faucet in your house.  The water in your house is ready to flow 24/7; yet it won’t flow until you turn the faucet on.  So with speaking in tongues.

Acts chapter 2 states:  “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”  In order to experience that in the 21st Century, we must sincerely desire to align our heart and lifestyle to God’s will and then ask Him to fill us with His Spirit.

At that point the Holy Spirit is ready to flow (the water pressure in the faucet is ready).  The only thing we need to do is to step out in faith and begin to speak words beyond our knowledge (turn the faucet).  At that moment a miracle happens — a supernatural stream of unknown words begins to flow from deep within and through our speech organs releasing an unbelievable sense of God’s presence, power, love, and joy!

This actually happened to me and I have seen it happen to many, many people.  After the first experience, you can pray in tongues any time and release the glorious inner flow of God’s power and presence.

So when you feel like you can’t go on, remember, God has a supernatural flow for you, too.  If you would like someone to talk with you and/or pray with you about this, you can email me at stsimms@live.com.

“Bond — James Bond” vs. “Bond — Lifetime Bond”

1)  “Bond — James Bond”

In the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, Sean Connery identifies himself by saying:  “Bond (long pause) James Bond!”  For 50 years, from that first Bond movie to Sky Fall, the 23rd one, the Bond franchise has been brainwashing the public to embrace James’ attitude and behavior toward sex.

James Bond sees sex as a meaningless, pleasurable activity, designed for nothing but conquest and personal satisfaction.  For him, women are mere objects to be used for self-gratification.  Bond has no regard for consequences.  No long-term concern for the other person.  James Bond has absolutely no honor for the greater purposes of sex — deep emotional/spiritual intimacy; long-term and mutually supportive union; procreation; and providing a loving stable home for family and society.

2)  “Bond — Lifetime Bond”

Both my parents and in-laws have been married for more than 60 years.  My two brothers and 4 brothers and sisters-in-law have decades long marriages.  My wife and I have been married for 21 years.  I would be totally shocked if any of those couples decided to divorce.

A lifetime bond opens the door to intimacy far greater than mere physical activity.  It provides a companion, not just for a momentary stand or a passing fancy — but for a lifetime adventure of deep love and mutual support.  It creates solid family rather than fractured fantasy.

A lifetime bond is not perfect.  It’s not easy.  It takes hard work, sacrificial commitment, guts, and self-denial, but the joys far outweigh the difficulties.  In fact, the blessings and benefits of someone who loves you so much that they won’t dump you for another, carry you through the trials.

James Bond can have his sexcapades, spreading his sperm (and quite probably disease) far and wide.  He can have his record of broken hearts; lies; manipulating women; unwanted kids and/or abortions; buried inner guilt; and emotional loneliness.

I’ll stick with lifetime bond.

(There is one other Bond you should know about — General Linda Bond, worldwide leader of The Salvation Army.  If you google her, you will learn a lot.)

Poem — Feel The Real Deal Thrill . . .

When you know that Jesus is real
There’s a never-ending thrill,
No matter how you feel.
You can’t stand still
Or follow the seductive appeal
Of popular culture’s deal,
Because your heart is full of passion and zeal
To hear Christ’s voice and obey what He will reveal!

Was Jeremiah A Holy Shock Jock?

A shock jock can be defined as:  A radio personality who uses provocative or inflammatory words to make offensive and/or controversial comments in order to get people’s attention and build ratings for his program.

A modern example of a shock jock is Howard Stern.  He pushes the limits of vulgarity and disrespect in order to shock people.

An ancient example (of a shock jock before radio) is Jeremiah, the Old Testament prophet, who boldly declared God’s moral standards and human wrong doing — trying to shock people into turning away from their sinful behavior.  Here are some shocking statements from shock jock Jeremiah:

“Your wickedness will punish you . . . You have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame . . . You do all the evil you can. . . Acknowledge your guilt–you have rebelled against the Lord, your God. . . How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?. . . Your own conduct and actions have brought this on you.”

Speaking about the people, holy shock jock Jeremiah says:  “They have perverted their ways. . . They are senseless children; they have no understanding. . . They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good. . . They made their hearts harder than stone and refused to repent. . . They do not know the way of the lord, the requirements of their God. . . They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man’s wife. . . These people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone astray. . . ”

“Their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice.  They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor.”

“The prophets prophesy lies, the priest rule by their own authority. . . Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. . . The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. . . From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain. . . They have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. . . They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. . . They all act corruptly. . . They followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.”

“This is the nation (Jeremiah is referring to Israel and Judah) that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction.  Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.”

“None of them repent of their wickedness saying, ‘What have I done?’. . . They go from one sin to another. . . No one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. . .

Can What You Know Prevent You From Learning?

Millions of Europeans knew that the world was flat.  They had no desire to sail off of the edge of the world.  So ships sailed close to shore and no one learned that there was a new world across the Atlantic Ocean.

Then one day, Christopher Columbus dismissed his fear of falling off the world, and talked Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain into funding a voyage of discovery across the Atlantic.  What did Chris stumble upon?   The Americas.

“It is what we think we know already that often prevents us from learning.” –a quotation from Claude Bernard

* There is a fresh, exciting way of doing church centered around open sharing and testimonies (much like a support group) rather than around a one-person sermon. (See 1 Corinthians 14:26.)

* However, sometimes, what we think church should be like keeps us from experiencing the excitement and glory of participatory church. Why not check it out for yourself with us at The Salvation Army Berry Street — 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45?

My 21st Century Psalm (King David Style)

I recently attended a prayer and fasting retreat sponsored by the Kentucky and Tennessee Division of The Salvation Army and was challenged to write a psalm.  So I did.  Here it is:

Psalm of Steve #1

Nothing comes from nothing,

There’s always a cause,

Always a maker of some kind.

Thank You, Maker of Heaven & Earth,

For making me.

Thank You, God, for a mind to think,

And for a heart to know You.

Thank You, my Creator,

For the perception of Your Presence,

For saving me from my self-deception,

Pride independence, and bondage to sin.

Thank You, Dear Jesus, My Maker made man,

For changing my life

And giving me forgiveness, peace, joy, and love.

Your salvation still applies in the 21st Century!

Lord, my life now cries;

“You can meet your Maker, not as religion or myth,

But as a life-long friend whose love for you never fails!”

Imagine If Church Had More And Less

What if would happen if church had . . .

More of the Spiritual Guide speaking inside of everybody present and less of the one man sage on the stage?  (1 John 2:27)

More prayer, less pride?  (2 Chronicles 7:14)

More God, less self-focus?  (Matthew 6:33)

More obedience, less resistance?  (John 14:15)

More brokenness, less keeping it together?  (Isaiah 6:5)

More confession of sin and repentance; less justification of our individual and societal moral failures?  (1 John 1:9)

More Spirit-fanning (everybody sharing prayers, testimonies, Scriptures, gifts of the Spirit, songs, and laying on of hands) and less lesson planning (one man sermonizing)?  (1 Corinthians 14:26)

Come and see for yourself at The Salvation Army Berry Street at 225 Berry Street in Nashville, Tennessee 37207 — Sundays at 9:30 am for a participatory Bible study and/or 10:45 am for a worship gathering based on open sharing and testimonies.
