Giving Tuesday — A Great Idea

In the midst of the shopping celebrations (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday) we now have a day for giving back — Giving Tuesday.  American charities and non-profits have come together to create the first Giving Tuesday, tomorrow, November 27, 2012 — opening day for the year-end giving season.

The idea for Giving Tuesday came from Henry Timms, deputy executive director of the Jewish community center 92nd Street Y, and Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation.  Here’s how Henry Timms explains the concept:  “‘We have a day for giving thanks, two days for getting deals. Why shouldn’t there be a day for giving back?”

More than 2,000 charities, business and organization have signed up to help kick off the first national Giving Tuesday.  It’s a great day to give back.

If you have been reading my blog and would like to support the work of The Salvation Army Berry Street in the McFerrin Park inner city neighborhood of East Nashville, Giving Tuesday would be a great day to do it.

A Simple Christmas Quiz

A very simple and very short Christmas quiz:

Christmas is about Jesus coming to save people from their . . .
A) winter boredom.
B) needing a reason to shop.
C) sins.
D) needing a cute story to entertain their kids.

Answer:  The reason for the season is “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  (Matthew 1:21)

Another question:

Does the new normal equal the old sins?  If so, then do we need to be saved from the new normal?

Perhaps we should remember this ancient prayer this Christmas (known as the Jesus Prayer):  “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Thanking God On Thanksgiving Day — 2012

Happy Thanksgiving 2102, everybody! (Let’s get started.)
*Thank You, Lord for creating me and giving me life. Thank You for this beautiful world you have placed me in. (Sorry we humans have messed it up so much.) Thank You for health, a sound mind, all my senses, food, clothing, work, freedom, shelter, heat and air conditioning, transportation, entertainment, and communication. Thank You so much,Lord, for my wife and our relationship, for my daughter, for my parents and in-laws (all 4 in their 80s) and for all my extended family and friends.

Thank You, Lord, for the opportunity that The Salvation Army has given me to see a long-term dream come true, the birth of a non-traditional, participatory church in Nashville. Thanks, God, for all the people who have experienced Berry Street and have been touched by Your Presence and power there. And thank You, Lord, in advance for the mighty movement of repentance and spiritual awakening that is coming to Nashville, America, and around the world. Bring it on, Lord!

(Now it’s your turn to engage in the act of thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day. Go ahead, take some time, and tell God thanks.)

Participatory, Organic Church Ideas From Salvation Army Leaders

“There is a danger of the old clergy and laity idea creeping in amongst us. The common church idea is that of a minister doing all the fighting and feeding, while his congregation does all the looking on and swallowing. We are an Army. Every soldier is expected to fight.” –Frederick Booth-Tucker

“I am afraid the idea has sometimes got abroad that officers (Salvation Army pastors) are intended to be like parsons and preach sermons, to monopolize all the time of a meeting while the people they are supposed to lead in fighting do nothing.” –Edward Higgins, third General of The Salvation Army

“There is no room for passive membership. In this sense, ’soldier’ is a better word than ‘member’.  Members can be passive or active; they may do no more than belong on the rolls. Soldiers cannot only belong; they are either fighting or maintaining readiness for battle – otherwise, they are not really soldiers’. ” –Commissioner Phil Needham

“These people stand in these paths of traditionalism and routinism just where their forefathers left them occupying all their time admiring the wisdom and benevolence and devotion of their forefathers instead of imitating their aggressive faith and marching on to the conquest of the world.”  –Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army

“It was only the repressing, keeping down, and ultimately, I am afraid, the all but extinguishing of the Holy Spirit’s urgings that has led to the state in which many of you now are, and to the dead way in which many of our services are conducted.”  –Catherine Booth

“What unkind things have been said of The Salvation Army because people at our meetings have fallen on their faces under the convicting power of the Spirit”.   –Catherine Booth

“People contend that we must have quiet, proper, decorous services.  I say, where is your authority for this?”  –Catherine Booth

“We Salvationists expect it (the personal reign of Christ) to be preceded by further and mightier outpourings of the Holy Ghost than any yet known.”  –William Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army

“People come to the quarters of our army and see our sisters and brothers dancing; they are shocked. Is this religion? They ask. Certainly. Why should the devil have all the dancing, I’d like to know? I expect to go on dancing through all eternity. It is a great deal better than to go and sit in a place like a lot of mummies in a pyramid in Egypt.”  –William Booth

Write Your Wrongs & Move On In Peace (A Message Of The Christmas Season)

We are about to enter the Christmas season; known by retailers (and shoppers) as the make or break Christmas shopping season that begins on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.  So what’s the real reason for the season?  God’s love for you!  That’s why He sent Jesus Christ (see John 3:16).

God loves you and He doesn’t want you to perish under a painful pile of guilt produced by your permissiveness and sin.  So Christ came that you can be forgiven from your guilt, made clean and set free from your wrong words, thoughts, and actions.

Christmas isn’t just fancy fluff and theory.  God’s loving forgiveness is very practical and life transforming.  Personally experience it this Christmas season by doing this — write your wrongs & move on in peace.

Here’s how:  Get a pen and piece of paper.  Then make a list of your naughty (not nice)  thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions.  Be completely honest with yourself and write down as many as you can think of.

Then sincerely tell God:  “Lord, I’m sorry for doing these things and I don’t want to do them any more (and slowly read the list to Him).  Please forgive me for all of this, Lord.  And help me to stop all these things.  Please set me free.”  If any emotions come, let them happen (don’t hold them back).  Stay before God until you sense His peace.

Next, take the paper and tear it into tiny pieces.  Then trow it in the trash.

That’s what God does when you confess your sins.  He forgives you and forgets.  He gives you peace and removes your guilt.  He gives you power to do what Jesus told the woman caught in adultery:  “Go and sin no more.”

Experience the real meaning of Christmas this year.  Write your wrongs and then move on in the peace and forgiveness of God.

Need help with this process?  Come visit The Salvation Army Berry Street — an open, loving, participatory church where you can feel God’s love, forgiveness, presence, and power — on Sundays at 10:45 am., 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee, 37207.

What Would William Booth Say Today? (WWWBST?)

William Booth was the founder of The Salvation Army.  He was a man with a passionate love for God and a deep love for humanity.  He died 100 years ago this year.  What would William Booth say to us today — 100 years later?  Perhaps he would say. . .

“A famous quotation from me repeats the words ‘I’ll fight!’  But what was I fighting for and what are you fighting for?  The purpose of our fight is to take and hold territory — to change neighborhoods and cities by changing individual people through Christ’s salvation!  We are The Salvation Army!  We fight to see souls saved — to see people surrender in obedience and holiness to Jesus Christ and then to become fellow soldiers in the salvation fight.”

“We are not just about doing nice things.  We do good things toward an end.  That goal is the salvation of souls.  We dare not help people live a better or more comfortable life here and neglect to warn them of the danger of missing the hereafter!  Yes, love compels us to help people and to show them kindness, but then true love drives us further — it bids us to boldly declare to people that they can be saved from the bitter pains of self-destruction, bondage to sin, and separation from God!  That we must do!  We simply must!  Eternal life is at stake!”

“It’s time to be red-hot!  Not lukewarm!  So sound the alarm!  Wake up Salvationists to your great and mighty calling to be a soldier, not just in a religious or social service organization, but to be a warrior of the living God, hearing His voice and obeying His orders!  March to His beat!”

“My dear wife Catherine presented the first Salvation Army Flag in 1878 to the Coventry Corps in England so that they could use it as a weapon in the spiritual fight for souls. The Blood & Fire Flag was never intended to be used as an ornamentation or decoration for a corps, but as a battle flag on the streets and in open airs around the world. It is not too late to put this glorious banner to work getting the attention of the world and proclaiming the Blood of Jesus and the fire of the Holy Spirit. It’s not too late to fight for souls! So fight the spiritual fight, my comrades, fight! Walk, pray, and show God’s love as you carry the Flag and the spiritual battle to the streets in your neighborhood!”

“You have a powerful way to share the Gospel that I didn’t have — social media.  Use it like we used open airs in my day.  Proclaim the love of Christ.  Call people to repent and turn away from their sins.  But be careful.  Don’t ‘like’ ungodliness, unholiness, and wickedness.  And don’t read it or watch it!  If Salvationists succumb to and/or support social media sin, how can you be a light?  What weak warriors you will be, swept along in a tide of moral collapse.  Don’t go there, comrades!  Instead, use social media to change the world, but don’t let it change you!”

“Cultivate your courage.  You need it.   But don’t wait for courage to fall upon you.  Get up.  Step out.  Take one bold step — even if you feel afraid.  Make your shoes ‘just do it’ and go do something bold with the love for God and man brimming in your heart!”

“Declare war on sin within yourself.  That’s a battle you must win.  Fiercely fight the enemies of your soul — the desire to please people, focus on pleasure, stubborn self-will, self-justification and pride, ensnaring habits, and the allure of a world gone crazy on stuff and sex.  Fight hard to be like Jesus, every day!  Don’t be a brainwashed imitation of the world and its pleasure stuffed media.  Be a Christ-man or a Christ-woman!”

“Urgency!  The greatest human tragedy is happening every day.  Millions are dying without Christ and His salvation.  Rouse yourself to the urgency of so many of your fellow humans in desperate need of warning and rescue!”
