A Preference And A Conviction Make Me Part Of Two Minority Groups

I’m part of two small minority groups, however, I seldom tell anyone.  I guess I am in the closet.

I’ve been a vegetarian for about 4 years.  Its my preference.  I stopped eating meat to support my daughter who is a vegan, however, I soon noticed that it made me feel better.

I’m also a pacifist.  I have a deep conviction that violence and war are wrong, ungodly, and evil.  I’ve felt this way as long as I can remember.  My parents say that when I first learned to talk I would ask why there is war and cry about it.

If I tell someone I am a vegetarian, the response usually ranges from unbelief to mild disapproval to pity (poor guy can’t eat meat).  However, if I tell someone I am a pacifist, the response heats up; it ranges from moderate disapproval to anger or disdain.

Pacifists are one of the least accepted minority groups in history.  We have been persecuted by almost ever human culture (especially during war) — mocked, hassled, called unpatriotic, silenced, tortured, put in work camps or jail, killed, forced to fight.  That’s why you hear so little about pacifists.  It’s scary to come out of the closet.

I know that some people disapprove of vegetarians and that many people disapprove of  pacifists and think that our beliefs and lifestyle are wrong.  However, I am not demanding approval.

People have the right to disapprove of people’s lifestyles.  They just don’t have the right to be mean or hostile toward those whose behavior they disapprove of.

So here’s a question:  Shouldn’t vegetarians and pacifists  have the same right to come out of the closet as other minority groups or should we just be quiet and stay in the closet?

Good people don’t need Jesus. Sinful people desperately need Him.

To fall short of the glory of God is to sin. (“All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” –Paul of Tarsus)

Here’s another quote from Paul of Tarsus:  “The wages of sin is death . . .”  The payoff for sin (falling short of the glory of God) is separation from the God who is the source of life.  All humans have earned and deserve separation from God.

“. . . but the gift of God is eternal life.”  However, God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ made a way for all who have fallen short to be reconciled to Him forever.

A grasp of the truth shows us that our only access to God is ongoing repentance and obedient trust in Christ.  Like the sinner mocked by the Pharisee, God’s light shows us our need to continually pray the Jesus Prayer from the depths of our heart:  “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

I am what I AM says I am. (And so are you.)

I am not what others say I am.

I am not what I feel like I am.

I am not what I believe I am.

I am not what I accomplish or fail to accomplish.

I am not what I pretend to be.

I am what I AM says I am.  That’s what I am.

I need to know what I AM says that I am.  I learn this in two ways:  1) by listening to God speak to me in my heart and through my conscience.   He convicts me of my wrongful behaviors, thoughts, and emotions and calls me to turn away from them and to follow and obey Him.   He tells me who and what He has created me to be.

2) by reading the Bible with an open heart and mind, He will make its words come alive in me.  His words burning in my heart, will show me who I am.

I Am is the name of God.  “God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14 NIV

Would Chance Produce These Words? Or This? mbvpp[s fji03 n jfn9a- JFJ

If the symbols that you are now seeing on your computer screen couldn’t have happened over billions of years by a self-produced process of time and chance, but were instead, intentionally designed and built and posted by intelligent beings; how is it possible that time + a big bang (without any outside intelligence or creator) produced everything?

How Can You Heal A Broken Heart?

Breaking heart, what can heal you?

Restore your joy, your peace?

Not denial or drink or drugs,

Not antidepressants or anger

Or angst activity.

They merely mask the misery.

Only one has a proven record

Of consistently healing the brokenhearted

Across 2,000 years of human history.

Jesus Christ, the same

Yesterday, today, and forever.

Ideas to Tone Down the NBA, the NFL, and the Olympics

What if they made a new rule to tone down the Sochi Olympics by requiring all Olympic athletes to have one arm tied behind their back during competition?  Would you be okay with that?

What if, in order to reduce concussions and other injuries, the NFL made a rule that the game must be played with all players always on their knees?  Would that offend your interest in football?

What if NBA players were only allowed to use one leg and had to hop up and down the court?  Would that hurt attendance at games and/or TV ratings?

People would be outraged if any one of these three sports innovations were made.  They would speak out and protest.  They wouldn’t stand for their sport to be so severely restricted and toned down.

So why are people silent at what has been done to tone down church?  The exciting stuff has been taken out of church.  When I read about the First Century Church in the Book of Acts, I see lots of stuff that I don’t see in our churches and in our Christians in the 21st Century — deep repentance and turning away from sin; amazing boldness to speak the truth in love; fearless proclamation of Jesus; freedom from emotional, mental, and spiritual bondage; a willingness to suffer; an all-consuming passion to follow and obey Jesus every day; great humility; and a consistent lifestyle of loving others (even enemies).

There’s no wonder that church doesn’t attract the love, passion, sacrifice, and commitment that sports do in America.  Perhaps it is time to let church once again be like it was in the Book of Acts:  unleashed from passive, lethargic, emasculated, emotionless, and controlling human expectations and limitations.  Let God’s church once again be full of fire and spiritual desire, turning the world upside down.

Experience non-traditional church that is trying to be unleashed by modeling the Book of Acts:  The Salvation Army Berry Street, 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 on Sunday mornings at 10:45 and Thursday nights at 6:30.

Is the living current of Christ cruising within you, or do you have a dead battery under your hood?

Current events:  actions or words prompted by the flow of the Holy Spirit within you.  Don’t resist and/or quench the Spirit’s current, but go with His flow.

Like electricity the Spirit of God flows through conductors.  Is the living current of Christ cruising within you, or do you have a dead battery under your hood?

Is your life demonstrating what Jesus said about His current?  “Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.”

“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”  The Greek word used in that verse for power is dunamis from which we get our English words dynamo anddynamite.  Adynamois “a generator, especially one for producing a current.”

When you receive the Holy Spirit you receive a dynamo — God’s current, the ongoing flow of the Holy Spirit.  That’s why we are told to “Quench not the Holy Spirit,” — don’t shut down His flowing within you.

If you touch an electric current you know it and can’t help but react to it.  When you allow the Holy Spirit’s current to flow in and through you, there is no mystery — you and those around you know it and feel its effects.

O, for the release of the Spirit’s current through 21st Century believers.  Dead batteries that produce no current will accomplish nothing.

On The First Day Of Summer, Life’s Not A Bummer . . .

Summer time is finally here.  Today is officially the first day of summer, 2012  . . .

“People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” ~Anton Chekhov (Are you happy?)

“I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”  –Albert Camus  (Have you discovered the invincible summer — Christ in you, the hope of glory?)

“Summer sang in me.”  –Edna St. Vincent Millay  Let God’s singing begin, let the Son-shine in!
