Unconditional Will Wow You!

Unconditional will wow you!

Unconditional, a new movie staring Lynn Collins and Michael Ealy, is based on events in the life of Joe Bradford, affectionately known as Papa Joe by the people whose lives he has changed in the projects of Nashville, Tennessee.  It is a moving story, powerfully portrayed — one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.  It clearly demonstrates the power of active, heart-felt love to transform lives being devastated by neglect and hopelessness as well as to transcend racial and economic barriers.

Unconditional was especially touching for me because my wife and I have spent the past 4 1/2 years loving and relating to many people in an urban neighborhood in East Nashville.  We have seen first hand that loving, unconditional relationships have the power to change people’s lives.  However, there is a famine of such relationships in the inner city (and I think also, in the suburbs as well).

Go see this movie.  It may make your realize that you are missing something in your life — deep heart-felt love!  If you like what you see in Unconditional I invite you to come and experience this kind of love in person at The Salvation Army Berry Street.  It is located at 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207.  Here you will see black people & white people, young & older people, middle-class & poor people loving one another — unconditionally.  Come visit us one Sunday morning at 10:45 and experience firsthand, God’s love.

Are Americans (And Other Westerners) Morality-Phobic?

Are Americans morality-phobic?  Is morality-phobia widespread in our land?  Here are a few questions:

Are Americans so afraid of honesty that they feel the need to tell little (and sometimes big) lies?

Are they so frightened of not having enough that they will cheat to get ahead?

Are they so afraid of reality that they seek to alter their consciousness with drugs and/or alcohol?

Are they scared of being inconvenienced to the point that they will pay someone to destroy the innocent human life that they have produced in the womb?

Are Americans so afraid of not getting what they want that they will take things that don’t belong to them?

Are they so terrified of sexual purity that they will do their best to keep any mention or portrayal of it out of popular movies, television, radio, and other media?

Are Americans so scared of uplifting, wholesome, encouraging entertainment that they will regularly watch and/or attend displays of vulgarity and indecency?

Or is morality-phobia just a myth?

Make A Courageous Act Of Spiritual Warfare

The Salvation Army Flag is known as the Blood & Fire.  It’s not decor for a corps (a Salvation Army church); it’s for feet to walk a beat on the street praying and testifying to the glory of God. It’s a battle flag for spiritual warfare.  There’s no retreat!

The blood of Jesus brings us forgiveness and sets us free from our sins. The fire of the Holy Spirit gives us the passion and power to live a holy, Christ-like life in the service of God and others. Now we are called to show and tell what God has done. Let’s make a courageous act of spiritual warfare and carry the flag in our neighborhoods!

So who should take this spiritual battle flag to the streets?  Here’s a quote from The Salvation Army founder, William Booth:  ‘Not called!’ did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin.”

Someone told me that a speaker at the 2012 Salvation Army (USA South) Bible Conference at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, pulled out a full-size Salvation Army Flag and wrapped himself with it the way athletes do with their national flag at the Olympics.  We get wrapped up in so many meaningless things.  Perhaps it’s time to get wrapped up in the Blood & Fire!

I found this quotation on several Salvation Army web sites and confirmation on Answers.com: “The Salvation Army flag is the only flag, other than the U.S. flag, to have flown on the moon.”  But has it flown on the streets in your neighborhood?  Why not?

It can be a bit intimidating to carry the Blood & Fire on the streets.  Perhaps you need a support group.  Check out this Facebook page:  Prayer Walking With The Salvation Army Flag . . .

From Hinduism to Jesus Christ

I recently helped Tapan Saha write his testimony about finding Christ.  Tap is a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center in Nashville.  Here’s his story:

I was born to a Hindu family in East Pakistan.  I first learned about Christians when I went to the Southern District where my parents were the owners and landlords of a large rice plantation.

There were three religious groups that were share croppers for my parents:  Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.  From my parents conversations I learned that Christian share croppers were the most honest of the three.  I was impressed with how neat the Christians kept their yards, gardens, and homes.  The Christians would even bring eggs, chickens, and fruits to my parents to show their appreciation for allowing them to be sharecroppers.

As a child I went by the local Christian church many times and Christians often invited us to their church and to visit their homes.  We went a few times.

During the civil war between West and East Pakistan we migrated to India as refugees.  Then my brother, who lived in Albany, New York, decided to bring me to the United States.  I was sixteen.

In New York my best friend was a Christian and I often went with him to the Greek Orthodox Church, but they never asked me to become a Christian.

During college I took a summer job selling Bibles for The Southwestern Company in Nashville for two summers: 1976 and 1977. I learned how to explain the Bible very well through a memorized sales talk and was in the Top 100 salesmen.

After college I moved to Nashville and met Mr. M.A. Henderson who was the chairman of the board for The Gideons International.  He explained to me about John 3:16 and gave me a Bible in the Bengali language (my mother tongue).  He frequently took me to his Presbyterian church.  He kept telling me I wouldn’t know God until I converted to Christianity, but I told him that something similar to that is also said in Hinduism.

I joined the US Navy and would go to chapel every Sunday to catch up on my sleep.  However, gradually I began to understand the importance of Christianity.

In 2009 I became a bell ringer for the Berry Street Corps with The Salvation Army.  Steve and Ernie Simms invited me to visit their church.  I fell in love with Steve and Ernie and their sincerity, love, and zeal for Christianity.  I kept on coming every Sunday even after the bell ringing season ended and I have continued to attend since that first Christmas and to also go to Bible study and prayer meeting.

After attending Berry Street for a while I started changing.  I felt the Holy Spirit coming into me and convicting me to become a Christian.  I kept watching how Steve and Ernie treat people with love, respect, and dignity.  I even began to study the Bible at home.

Now I am a Christian and I want to follow Jesus Christ the rest of my life.  I became a soldier in July of 2011.  I feel like God is calling me to be an officer in The Salvation Army and I am ready to pursue His plans for me.

(Come and experience the power of Christ working in our participatory worship gatherings at:  225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 at 10:45 on Sunday mornings.)

Perhaps It’s Time To Cry Out To God

Cry Out Nashville was a prophetic event held in Cumberland Park, overlooking downtown Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday, September 15, 2012. Christ-followers gathered to worship God and to cry out for spiritual awakening and revival.  God is wanting believers in Nashville (and around the world) to passionately cry out to Him.

Unfortunately, crying out in a Sunday church service is not allowed in most churches.  It would be considered out-of-order, improper, or rebellious if an individual began to cry out during a church meeting. Still God wants to hear our passionate heart cry — even during church meetings.

If you are looking for a place where you are allowed and encouraged to cry out to God and to obey Him rather than the scheduled Sunday program, I invite you to visit The Salvation Army Berry Street at 225 Berry St., Nashville, 37207 at 10:45 am. on Sundays.  Our meetings have no agenda.  Each Sunday we are led in passionate adoration of God by a different worship leader.

Then we encourage people to show and tell what God has done.  There is no sermon, but still the Word comes roaring forth as people share from their heart: Scriptures, testimonies, words of knowledge, passionate prayers, visions, words of encouragement, prayer requests, prophetic words, etc.  It is always amazing how God leads and personally puts together a beautiful time of encounter with Him.

Here’s a question:

If Jesus is really alive and present when we gather, why do we have a man lead the service?  Isn’t Jesus capable of leading a church meeting all by Himself?

Come and see for yourself . . .

There’s A You In You

There’s more to life than meets the eye.  There’s more to see than Instagram, Netflicks, YouTube, and TV.

So open your eyes.  Take a look in your heart.  You’ll see that there’s more than Intel inside — more than integrated electronics — more than interfacing chipsets, circuits, and processors.

There’s a you in you — an aware, conscious, decision-making, instigating, responsible, wise being.  You’re not a programmed robotron.  You are more than a body and a brain.

You are a self, a soul, a spirit — a nonmaterial reality.  You are literally from out of this world — a non-physical being, inhabiting a material body — an intangible person encased in flesh.

Don’t take my word for it.  Examine your inner self.  Although you can’t see it with a microscope or experiment with it in a test tube, you know that you exist — that you are real.

When brain denies the existence of self, soul, and spirit, people are left with emptiness.  However, you can avoid the void by getting in touch with your inner reality.

Be still.  Listen.  Be aware of what’s going on deep inside of you.  There is a still small voice inside.  Heed the call.  Don’t let your brain call you insane.  True sanity involves much more than information processing and robotics.  True sanity requires inspiration,  insight, purpose, meaning, revelation, aha moments, and wisdom.

Look inside.

Spiritual Warfare & The Christian Battle Flag

The “Blood & Fire” — the Christian battle flag of The Salvation Army — proclaiming the blood of Jesus, the fire of the Holy Spirit, and a lifestyle of following and obeying the living, resurrected Jesus Christ.

The Salvation Army Flag is not a decoration to collect dust inside a chapel or church building.  It’s not a religious relic.  It is a battle flag that belongs on the streets of the world.

The first “Blood & Fire” flag was dedicated by Catherine Booth in 1878 in Coventry, England.  It immediately became a powerful tool carried by Salvation Army soldiers as they “invaded” countries around the world and “fought’ on the streets to proclaim the Gospel and bring people to Christ.  (Perhaps it would also be good for contemporary Christians to take this battle flag to their streets.)

The above image is a portrayal of using the “Blood & Fire” flag in spiritual combat.  The flag has three colors, each proclaiming a powerful Christian truth.  In the center there is a yellow star containing the words “blood & fire.”  (On the flag above they are written in Swedish.)

The yellow cries out for the fire of the Holy Spirit.  A red field surrounds the star and proclaims the blood of Jesus.  A blue border surrounds the field and calls believers to a lifestyle of purity and holiness.

Christ-followers are called to “fight the good fight of faith” — to engage in spiritual warfare.  However, their weapons are not the physical tools of violence but sacrificial acts of love and nonviolence.  (Check out this Bible verse — 2 Corinthians 10:4)

Through out history, the soldiers of violence have gone into physical combat with the battle flag of their nation, empire, or kingdom leading their way.  Spiritual warriors can do the same.  We can boldly carry the “Blood & Fire” banner onto the streets of our neighborhoods, cities, and countries.

What if hundreds of believers around the world would begin to carry the “Blood & Fire” flag on the streets for just one hour each week?  Think of the impact that would have!

Tomorrow Is “National Back To Church Sunday”

September 16, 2012 is National Back To Church Sunday in the USA.  It is a promotion that involves thousands of churches from many denominations working together to encourage people who have dropped out of church to come back.

If you are considering coming “back to church” tomorrow, perhaps you would like to try out a different kind of church.  The Salvation Army Berry Street Worship Center is a participatory church based on the open sharing of testimonies, prayers, Scriptures, words of encouragement, gifts of the Spirit, etc. — much like a support group.  It is unprogrammed and Spirit-led.

Check it out on National Back To Church Sunday (or any Sunday) at 10:45 am. — 225 Berry St., Nashville, Tennessee 37207.

Sex Is Easily Perverted

Sex is easily perverted . . .

* From making love to making whoopee . . .

* From cherishing someone to getting some . . .

* From laying your life down for the one you love to getting laid . . .

* From life-long intimacy to indecency and pornography.

* From exalting someone to exploiting some body . . .

If we are not careful in the sexually confused environment of contemporary society, we will miss the best sex that creates soul mates, and settle for shreds.

3N1 — A Great Time Saver

Here’s a powerful time management technique — 3N1:  Do 3 productive things at the same time.  That way you can triple you’re effectiveness.  Here’s an example:

Would you like to exercise, pray, and witness to others — all at the same time?  Well you can.  Here’s how.  Prayer walk with The Salvation Army Flag.

1)  You get great exercise as you carry the flag and walk.  I usually go two or more miles.  (It even works out your arms.)

2)  It also creates wonderful prayer time as you see first hand the needs in your community and as the Holy Spirit guides you how to pray for them.  Some of my best prayer time is while on the streets with the “Blood & Fire” Flag.

3)  Flag prayer walking is an easy way to witness to others.  If you are on a busy street 100s of people will see the flag.  Sometimes they will wave, honk, or even stop and ask:  “What’s that flag for?”  That’s an open invitation to tell them about the blood of Jesus and the fire of the Holy Spirit.  I’ve found that if you ask, most of the people you talk to on the street will even let you pray with them on the spot.  It’s incredible!

So save some time today.  Take up The Salvation Army Flag (or other Christian flag) and walk.  Exercise, pray, and witness.
